Desmond's Role Put Into Perspective

Ubisoft is well aware of the lukewarm fan response that Desmond has garnered in the Assassin's Creed series. The game's creative director says that by the end of Assassin's Creed III, those same players could very well change their opinions. If you haven't yet formed an opinion on the character, Ubisoft has released a new trailer that chronicles Desmond's journey throughout the series.

“The story of Assassin’s Creed, AC II, Brotherhood and Revelations was to build Desmond up,” creative director Alex Hutchinson told Edge. “He’s this guy who’s a bit of a nobody when it starts out, and gets new abilities through reliving the lives of his ancestors.

“So we’ve built this guy up over the course of the games, and I really believe that we can pay that off, and in retrospect he’ll be terrific. I don’t think anyone really liked Luke Skywalker in [Star Wars] A New Hope, but by the end of his character arc, this journey that he goes through, makes him amazing.”

One thing's for sure: Players will be able to pick up the game on October 30 and make up their own minds.

  • Finally Desmond is getting some trailer action. I dare to say the best one of them yet? I can't wait to emerse myself into the story, it is what draws me back over and over again to this francise. It will be sad to see that this is the end of Desmond's story, but I look forward to completing this journey.

  • Desmond does play a critical role in the AC story, but I think Altair, Ezio, and Connor are far more compelling characters. Desmond comes off as a victim of circumstance rather than someone driven by his own motivations, as his ancestors were. (And it doesn't help that he spends the majority of the games chilling in what's essentially a fancy chair. XD)
  • That was an Amazing trailer! Altair is my favorite character, and I always knew it was all going to lead up to Desmond. I even thought AC III was going to be only about Desmond! I thought it was going to be like AC-Altair, ACII-Ezio and ACIII-Desmond! I was surprised by Connor, but I like it, it means more AC games :)

  • Cool trailer. Been wondering when one about him would show up.

  • I'm still kinda confused as to how Desmond is connected to Connor, I thought he had to be related to whoever he was in the Animus?
  • Still lame...
  • Sweet!! Best trailer I've seen yet!!

  • They're going to nail it. I always felt he lacked a certainty of purpose, but if the end of Revelations is any indicator, that time is over. He's the man with the plan.
Literally. It's tattooed on his arm.
I'm not happy about their decision to give him a shave, though; I was digging the goatee.
  • Seems like the director didnt played the games because 1 was about building Desmond and being an Assasin, 2 about the First Civilization warnings and Desmond learning more form the Bleeding effect and subject 16 warnings(even tough Demond should have killed someone); Brotehood & Revelations were just Ezio Fests unrelated to the main story since 3 could have perfectly started with Broterhoods ending and then organically going to a coma trapped in Connors memory, waking up for the end (still in Assasin's3).
  • Not to diss gameinformer, but I think that "lukewarm response" is mostly your opinion. This is the only place that I hear that Desmond is not well liked. As for the rest, I love Desmond. My supposed "Problem" stems not from him being bad, but instead undervalued. I want MORE Desmond... and I don't want another small fraction of the game devoted, I want a good third. However, that won't happen.
  • Awesome. Q (John DeLancie) is Desmond's dad!
  • Very well-done trailer, but actions speak louder than words and cg-teasers :P I want to see what Desmond's capable of. THEN I'll see about whether or not he's as much a bad-ass as his ancestors.

  • I cannot wait. This is going to be amazing.

  • great trailer but where is conor? is he really the ancestor of desmont or they only wanted to refresh the thing that ezio and altair?
  • people are so happy for this!

  • I've always found desmond's story to be interesting

  • Damn I cant wait. The video looks great.

  • can't wait for this game!!

  • Was confused how Desmonds and the templars story went because I have only played AC2, this video helped with some confusing points while I wait for AC3

  • Guys for all we know Desmond probably won't even get in to the Animus...He probably will be able to relive Connor's life through the bleeding effect
