What's Happening

Review of AvP (XBOX 360)

This reboot of Aliens vs. Predator was mostly a disappointment for me. Sure there were several moments of fun and excitement, but I can't help but feel that another year or two of development might have helped this game, but no one can say for sure. Let me break it down for you:

Graphics - Now from what I've personally read, many frown upon the graphics of this game. In my opinion they're not bad, but not great. Some areas have some muddied colors, and some animations are stiff. Some of the stages can also look kind of bland. Very average overall. There are some stand out moments though. Performing one of the visceral Trophy Kills with a Predator, or a Stealth Kill with an Alien definitely delivers a rush (at least the first couple times). They're violent, and they remind you why these are two of the greatest sci-fi movie monsters from the last 20 years. I also thought the lighting (especially in the flares in the Marine campaign) really added to the atmosphere.

Gameplay/Content - There's certainly no lack of modes in this game. You have the 3 campaigns (Marine, Predator, and Alien), with 4 difficulties, and a variety of multiplayer modes. However, all of the campaigns are pretty short (I finished all 3 of the course of 2 days, which was about 5-6 hours I'm guessing). In my opinion, the Marine campaign is probably the best, mostly because of it's atmosphere. The lighting and the sound effects have a large impact of making you feel pretty vulnerable. It's not exactly "scary", but I jumped a couple times. Nothing really notable (positive or negative) about the Alien or Predator, besides the aforementioned Trophy/Stealth Kills. I tried to go back and play the campaigns again on the higher difficulties, but I just came away frustrated. In terms of multiplayer, I found myself really disinterested in all modes except for Survivor (i.e. Horde, Firefight, Nazi Zombies, etc.). There are a variety of modes, but nothing that I hadn't played before in some way, shape, or form. You level up through ranked matches, but your EXP doesn't unlock anything but new skins, which have nothing but cosmetic value. Currently, there is one map pack for download, but without it, I believe there's not enough variety of maps to keep it even slightly interesting.

To sum it up, I found myself playing today on the hardest difficulty setting, and turning it off in frustration after playing two missions. I then realized that was just Achievement whoring, and not really enjoying the game. This is a tendency that I usually don't go into until I've owned a game for at least a month or two. I've had this game for a week-and-a-half. Basically there are things to like about this game, but they're brought down by the mediocrity of the rest of the game. If you consider yourself a big fan of the franchise, this might justify a rental. Otherwise, wait until it's $30 or less, so you won't feel quite as disappointed as I do.
