The lights are on
I know there are lots of discussions over backwards compatibility of PS3s. However, everything I've read only mentions support for PS2 games, nothing about PSOne games. Unfortunately, I didn't have a PSOne or PS2, so I'm now looking into going back and playing the gems that I missed out on. I wanted to know what everyone's experiences have been with playing PSOne games on the PS3. Do they work on all models, some models or not really at all?
PS3's don't typically have any backwards compatibility anymore. The 20gb, 60gb, and some of the 80gb PS3's (the fat ones) had backwards compatibility.
You can find some old classics on PSN to purchase and download onto the PS3. As far as I know they haven't released any PS2 games, though I wouldn't quote me on that.
Your best bet, if you want to play games from the disc is to pick up a PS2, it was compatible with every PS1 game I wanted to play.
All PS3s play PS1 games. Only half play PS2.
And to correct Paul, there are two versions of the 80 gig (both are fat, the slim has 120 gigs). The former 80 gig had 4 USB ports and PS2 capability (with an internet connection only), the latter had 2 USB ports and no PS2 capability. Otherwise, refer to his list for PS3s with full backward compatibility.
The 60 Gigabyte can PS2 and PS1 games. Most of the other PS3's can only play PS1 games.
Amanda is definitely right. I own the the old 60gb system and its both ps2 and ps1 compatible it has 4 usb ports and the media card reader. The only thing its not is wireless but that was no problem i had a 50ft Ethernet cable that I made for class which was really overkill and I just bought a 320gb hard drive to put in it.
Get your Portable ID!
I know they want you to dl them from the PSN store so they can get that money.
All Playstation 3 consoles are capable of Playstation 1 support. The same can't be said for PS2 games on latter PS3 consoles.
unfortunately it does not play ps1 games. but it does play movies!
Please refer to this month's GameInformer, wherein it is stated that Sony may (will?) provide the ability for all systems to become backward compatible.
As I said before, all PS3s play PS1 games. I know that I am 100% correct. As to why Sony offers PS1 games on PSN-- I doubt it's to rip you off. How many retailers carry PS1 games? Not many. If PSN didn't offer PS1 games for download, people would complain about that too.
The PSone games from PSN can be played on the PSP and the PS3 if you have the same network id set up on both systems, and for 5-10 bucks thats not bad, and like Amanda said, how many retailers carry PSone games?
my PS3 plays both PS1 and PS2 games i have heard that if the system has Four USB ports it is completely backwards compatible.
10 dollars for classics like Final Fantasy 7 and Crash Bandicoot are are definitely worth getting, especially since a hard copy is pretty expensive these days. Although the newer PS3s don't support PS2 games, I'm sure you can find an older model online for a reasonable price.
ello im just saying ello
I know that the new ones are not PS2 backwards compatible, but PS1 never occurred to me. I personally wouldn't mind grabbing a few of the classics, and if I can download them then that would be great I guess, though its not really a determining factor for me.
And also, dragon_prince.... you're gunna give my an aneurysm....
Oh my god, you never played a ps1!!!, well if your talking about ps1 cd's, cant say. But ps1 downloaded games work on both ps3 and psp.I believe the lauch models and the 80GB ps3's were the only ones that had some backwards compatibility, some meaning not all ps games worked on it.
