The lights are on
@Night Eyes: The PS3 didn't get rid of backwards compatibility completely. It can still play PSOne games.
@Bretthicks: Just to clarify, the X-Box 360 is only backwards-compatible with certain games. Microsoft released a list a while back of all the original X-Box games that will play on the 360; not all X-Box games are on that list.

I bought a backwards compatible PS3 for this reason alone. It cost me a little more because the people that have them know the value of them. You could sell the PS3 that you have now and try your hand at purchasing a backwards compatible PS3 off of Ebay. If you do that, though, you will not have a warranty.
Sony has a model checker in the support section of their site that lets you put in your console's number and it tell you whether it will play old games. The backwards compatible models are the 20gbs, 60gb, and the first of the 80 gbs. The models that are completely backwards compatible are the 20 and 60 gbs. The 80gb model has limited backwards compatibility You get a lot less hard drive space than you will with a newer model, that means storing less games.
Here is a link the the backwards compatible information and there is a link on the page for the model checker. If you buy used, check the model number if you really want a backwards compatible PS3.

As I said, it will cost more. Mine cost me $500 used.
Meta77: why does everyone seem to ignore the fact they have releasing the ps2 games as downloads from the store.

Because if you already own the game, why are you going to purchase it again. To take off the PS2 backwards compatibility, depending on the price, they can actually get more money from you than the BC system. They will charge $10-$20 for games you may already have, but can't play on the newer system and after 5-10 you have paid more than the extra $100 a BC system cost. Plus they put less into the system so their profits skyrocket.
That and the fact that Sony never lowers the price on their games is how Sony contends with the capital that Microsoft makes off of Live. If you still don't believe me, check out the price difference between these two games. Both cam out at the exact same time, and both are major exclusives. But one costs the original $59.99, while the other costs $29.99.
well id buy it again. take the sonic franchise. i have the game for my sega still, then i bought all the games on wii and then i bought them all on xbox360, if the ps3 had them id buy them there to. same way with the movie. i have the vhs, i bought the dvd and even downloaded it to my pc.
Everybody dance now
I was mad about the backwards compatibility until I looked three inches to the left and saw my PS2 . I was all "aww snaps your still here" !?! and it was like "yup and I work to"
then I'm all "dope" and it was like STFU Noob !
Invest in a PS2 and move on with life... Sony did.
I will move your controller using only the power of my mind.
If you have a PS2, use it for your PS2 games. OR buy an older PS3. :/
Probably be cheaper to use a PS2 system. The games will look the same way on both consoles.
If you still want to play ps2 games just buy a ps2. You can get on for 100 bucks new or find a used one for half the price. It's cheaper then buying another ps3 that is backwards compatible.

Good to hear you have money to throw around. Some of us don't have that luxury.
@NIght Eyes: I was only making the point that backwards compatibility wasn't completely removed from the PS3.
You can get a used PS2 in great working condition for probably less than 20 bucks if you know where to look. I know you can get them on e-Bay dirt-cheap.
@Night Eyes: If the comment I made about PS3's backwards compatibility was the most insulting thing you've ever heard, consider yourself lucky.
You say that there are no games worth buying for the PS3 , so why did you buy a PS3 if you only wanted to play PS2 games ? Sounds like you just want to argue about something stupid .

Excellent, excellent point.
this is because they want you to download the games 'ps2 classics where confirmed last year' but that seems to be most game company's theme these days:screwing over the consumer for as many dollars as they can. the result is having to download some of your games if you want to play them on your ps3 'i doubt sony will have all ps2 games since they are cheap assholes so don't expect many of your favorite games on psn' and it will steer people away from the ps4. too bad they won't take time out of developing ps home garbage to make a simple emulator. sad that the only place you can play your ps2 games is on a pc.....sony's 'and pretty much all console manufactuer's' new half-assed direction is why im playing next generation games on pc in the future......if everyone isn't broke and barely being able to afford to eat by then. laugh now rich people, you are most possible the one's with the most debt and are the ones that are really getting *** over by the economy soon.
