  • Hey guys, I didn't want to make a blog out of this because it doesn't meet the merits for it. What is your favourite MMO? If you can (by that, have the time), please state your favourite parts of the game and it is your favourite. Also try convincing others to join as well. ;)

  • Tera.  It has an awesome combat system.  An MMO that actually requires peoples attention and skill unlike other mmos that are about how well you can click your rotations.  I've only played the beta so far, but I've been very impressed.  The aim mechanics and no targeting is a nice change of pace.

  • I've played three MMOs: WoW, WAR (Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning), and Aion.

As far as the actual games are concerned, I enjoyed them all for different reasons.

Aion was a unique experience thanks to the way it handled both world and instanced PvP. There were three main ways to engage the enemy: The Dredgion, an instanced encounter between two groups of players from the opposing factions which could only be queued for at certain times throughout the day and played out sort of like a fight over what would be a regular dungeon in another game. There was also a huge focus on world PvP both in the abyss (a large open area consisting of 'islands' that had to be flown between with fortresses to fight over), and on land in the form of rifting (which entailed the use of special portals to invade your enemy's zones).

I also loved Aion's visual style and extensive character customization options.

Unfortunately the game was held back by 1) some truly stupid design decisions (flight could have been a lot cooler and aerial combat was especially bad), 2) a crappy engine for an MMO, and 3) weak customer/community support.

WAR was a lot of fun for a brief period of time. They did some innovative things with quest design and the PvP was fast-paced and fun. However, out of the MMOs I've played, I didn't spend much time with this one due to its numerous technical and balance problems.

And then there's WoW! The king of them all...

What can I say? It really is the perfect MMO. Not really. But it comes closer than any other so far. WoW is honestly a really well-made game and a perfect example of what Blizz does best: Rip-off other devs to spectacular result (WoW has already incorporated some of my favorite aspects of the other two MMOs I've mentioned).

I'd say that WoW's biggest strength, it's huge playerbase and broad appeal, could also be described as its greatest weakness: In trying to please everyone, Blizz often fails to make anyone happy, but hey, like I said it's only close to perfect.

Anyway, I could say a lot more about these games and MMOs in general, but I've blathered on enough already. I actually might blog about this sometime as I feel that many of GIO's users have...misconceptions about MMOs.

  • The only MMO I've played was World of Warcraft for around 2 and half years. It was a really fun game, and I have a ton of memories of my time playing it. Now the next MMO I'm looking forward to is Guild Wars 2. It seems like the MMO that's going to push the genre forward, and have some exciting game play as well. And there's no subscription fee! Can't wait for it! :D

  • I'm not too big on MMOs, but the everquest 2 to this day is my favorite, though I don't play anymore. The reason I liked it was the familiarity of it, you see I played the original everquest before that, so I wasn't a "noob" in the traditional sense, just the technical sense. Also I need a lizardman race to really get into playing, and the iksar did more than provide lol

  • My all time favorite MMO that is "free" would be Dungeons & Dragons Online. The reason for this is because it was one of the first MMOs that I have played and it satisfied what I wanted. It has several different classes. You can even mix up to 3 different classes in one character. There are several very good free classes and the ones that are not free are pretty unexpensive to buy. I have bought 3 different classes so far (Favored Soul is my favorite). You don't level up very easily so it does make it difficult. There are many questions you can go on and you can redo them all (but they will give you less and less XP) The best part about DDO is you can change the level of difficulty before you even go into the quest. Playing with other people is fun as well. I highly recomend DDO, even if you're not going to pay. It's hours of fun and it is also a strategy game as well. You get to choose what goes into what, your differnet spells, or different fighting styles and the list goes on.

  • Noob reporting in with SW:TOR

  • try darkfall online

heres video of what the gameplay is like

  • I've been playing WoW off and on since vanilla.  No game has come close to breaking its level of quality even after it just had its worst expansion released.  I gave Rift a shot, came back to WoW.  Other fellow guild mates whom I'd leave any mmo to keep playing with, played SWTOR on release....they came back.  While WoW has it's flaws, it's still the king of multiplayer end game content.

  • Well Ive played Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, WoW, Lord of the Rings Online, and several other smaller ones. I have to say DAoC is probably the best MMO Ive ever played. Just over all.

The interface of WoW is a lot better in my opinion, but the community is a bit lacking in my opinion and the level of enjoyment seems to grow with character level rather than just the entire game experience as a whole. One thing with DAoC is that, for me at least, no matter what level I was I still enjoyed all of the game content. With WoW I constantly feel like Im missing out until I reach the level cap.

So my vote is Dark Age of Camelot :P

  • hah! I'm currently playing that one too.

"..conscious thought will fail you not.."

  • The only MMO I have ever played is Runescape. It won't take your breathe away with visuals or combat, but I played it for around five years. I just loved the skills they had, PvM, and talking to frineds. I remember they came out with a timer that showed how much time you've actually spent playing, and my count was at about 350 days, a year's worth of my life! By that time I was ranked 80 in Runecrafting and top 3,000 in the all time high scores.

I realized that MMO's can take over your life if you're not careful and although I have a lot of good memories from that game and still talk to a lot of friends I met on there, I shouldn't have spent so much time on it. I'm still a gamer at heart but I don't think I'll be playing MMO's anytime soon, but GW2 looks very tempting..

  • My two friends have gotten me into League of Legends. Its not the funniest game but I enjoy playing with my pals

  • @halo3addict - It's still my favourite MMO to be honest. I got at least 180 days or so logged. I have played World of Warcraft (shared an account with a friend who paid for a year) and it was okay. It is fun but the community seemed a little lacking to me. In any case, RuneScape will be considered the MMO of my life.

  • @Ownzoir

Glad to finally meet another Runescapian! I agree RS is (was) a great MMO. The community was my favorite part of the game, and skilling with friends. If you played back in the '03-04 era, you'll know just how awful the graphics were in that game, but most people didn't care such as myself. All I cared about was the diverse gameplay, trading systems, and hanging out with friends. Oh yea, and showing off your rares to everyone else. I still talk to friends I made in that game to this day, and they're arguably the closest friends I have.

Ever since JaGEx removed the Wilderness and Free Trade though, I feel the game has gone downhill from there. Wilderness wasn't my favorite activity, but helping out friends by giving them money or letting them borrow items was a big part of the game for me. It was a big move to remove the amount of bots that infested that game, but I don't know if they still do anymore. When I quit though, there were rumours about JaGEx bringing back the Wilderness and free trade.

I cancelled my subscription about two years ago when college started up. All of my close friends had left the game by then so I didn't see any reason to stay. Most of my skills were maxed out anyways but skilling isn't fun w/o friends! I finally just gave my account to a close friend of mine, whom I met on RS, not too long ago. I'm sure RS has changed quite a bit since I left, but I'll always remember it in it's prime. Great MMO back in the day, I recommend everyone to try it out. They used to have a whole free-2-play world set up that anyone can play for an unlimited amount of time, and if you love the game that much you can pay a monthly fee to access the rest of the game. Great MMO.
