The lights are on
Anyone else realize that the reason Earthbound is only now being developed for play for newer systems is that Nintendo realizes that virtually everyone that likes Nintendo Or games will buy this. It is kind of like a fallback plan or insurance to boost sales. I personally believe that is why the Wii U is getting it finally, even though gamers have begged for it since the GBA. Anyone think this is why it's now appearing, because of Wii U's struggling sales?
I dont think releasing a what 17-18 year old title is really a system seller. I am sure there are a few people that will jump on it but not in massive numbers.
We're sorta like 7-Eleven. We're not always doing business, but we're always open.

Probably they just didn't feel like it yet. Newcomers may buy it to see where Ness originally comes from, but it's mostly a cult classic. I'm glad they waited so that now I can play Earthbound While my brother play xbox or something.
Earthbound has a cult popularity, but never had broad popularity. In the US, it was not a large seller, hence it's relative rarity these days, and premium asking price.
Ultimately, it's doesn't really matter why Earthbound is finally making a return.
I refuse to look this gift horse in the mouth.
I suppose that could be the reason. But then again is the reason really that important? People have been waiting for this to happen for a while, we should just be grateful that the game is actually going to be released.
