  • There was a Nintendo direct today.

    News

Mario Tennis for 3ds named Mario open Tennis, will feature touch screen hotkeys for different types of shots along with local and online multiplayer complete with leaderboards. It also has gyro controls for looking around the field

Dillion's Rolling Western launched on eShop, currently avaliable for download

Kid Icarus Uprising discussed, stand shown, references to two different multiplayer modes, multiplayer avaliable local and online, weapon fusion confirmed

    Xenoblade cover art revealed

Last Story confirmed to come to U.S sometime this year

Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir teased at the end

Fire Emblem 3ds coming to Europe, absent from American Nintendo direct

    My thoughts

I enjoyed the Mario Tennis for gamecube so I'll try it out. Dillion's Rolling Western intrigues me, but I'll have to see more before a purchase. Kid Icarus Uprising is full of content and the two online multiplayer modes seem interesting. Not into horror so I'll skip Spirit Camera

Xenoblade box art is awesome. And I rejoiced at the Last Story coming to the U.S

  • I don't give a crap about any waste-of-resources Mario "sports" title.  How hard would it be for Nintendo to make real sports games if they want sports games so bloody bad?  Pretty sure they still own the Mariners.

I'm interested in Spirit Camera.  Though, I would love to see Nintendo actually bother to use that Fatal Frame license they've got the rights for.  That or, far more preferably, a return to Eternal Darkness, even if it is just a 3D port of the GameCube game.

Looking forward to Last Story and I have Xenoblade pre-ordered.

Glad to finally see that the pre-order bonus for Kid Icarus is coming state-side (free download of the 3-D version of the original).  I'm going to have to head out to pre-order that right soon.

Not interested in Dillion's Rolling Western.

Glad to finally hear that Game Gear games are on their way to the 3DS Virtual Console.  Now they need to do the same with Game Boy Color, Super Game Boy, and (why not?) Atari Lynx.  Aw screw it, hey Namco-Bandai:  How about porting Wonderswan games to the 3DS VC?

Interested in this new Namco-Bandai/Capcom/Sega title on the way.

The Mario Tennis games are actually high quality (well the gamecube one at least). Though now that you mention it, Nintendo really hasn't done anything with the Mariners. Come on Nintendo, make a video game about the real life sports team you own.

I forgot about that announcement. I was distracted by the Last Story and Mario Open Tennis

  • I'm glad The Last Story is coming to the U.S. as well. I hope NoA also localizes Pandora's Tower as well.

I'm ready for a new Mario Tennis as I am a huge fan of the series and the sport. I'm glad there's online multiplayer and leaderboards.

Kid Icarus is just getting more and more awesome too. Glad I pre-ordered. Multiplayer is looking great too, I can't wait to try it.

Dillion's Rolling Western looks good, and I'll probably check it out soon.

Spirit Camera looks nice too. I may check that out too. It looks like I'm gonna have fun with my 3DS and Wii this spring/summer. Keep on bringing more good stuff Nintendo! Thanks for the news Gaming Warthog

  • The Monster Hunter:

I'm glad The Last Story is coming to the U.S. as well. I hope NoA also localizes Pandora's Tower as well.

Pandora's Tower became the third best seller after it's launch in Japan from what I've heard. And Operation Rainfall has done the impossible twice. There was a Gba game released an entire year after the DS launched, so there is a chance that even if the Wiiu comes out before Pandora's Tower can be localized that NoA will go through with the localization. So I say the odds are in it's favor.

I've edited the original post to include more info on Mario Open Tennis and Fire Emblem 3ds coming to Europe. If I'm missing anything else announced at Nintendo Direct please tell me.

I don't think Operation Rainfall had anything to do with Xenoblade or Last Story coming over here.  For one thing, Nintendo isn't even publishing Last Story in the States.  For another, look at what else the Wii has going for it in 2012.  Nothing.  This is far more likely a very calculated plan by Nintendo to hold back Xenoblade, Last Story, and maybe even Pandora's Tower until this late stage simply to give the Wii something for it's final year on the market.

The only things the Wii have going for it this year are it's impending removal from the market and a whopping two games.  Xenoblade and Last Story and essentially nothing else.  The Wii has been lingering along, one foot in the grave for almost two years now.  Nintendo fans ignored every third party company into abandoning the system, and while the Wii barely qualifies as being in a coma, the Xbox 360 and PS3 are seeing their golden years continuing to shine.

Even Nintendo must realize this.  I'm betting they do, and that they have.  I'm betting even more that they deliberately held back these three titles in order to pad the Wii's final year and give it some reason to continue to exist.

If they were really smart, they'd fill out this final year with all the other internationally neglected titles--Fatal Frame, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Pandora's Tower, and whatever else we've missed out on.  Frankly, there is one final title we've yet to get solid information on, and that's Dragon Quest X, which will no doubt give the Wii and Wii U a helluva boost in Japan.

In Terms of games that have no news of coming out in some countries, it's best to assume the worst possible scenario. So I'm going to assume their were no plans before operation rainfall, either way both scenarios are in favor of Pandora's Tower so it doesn't really make a difference.

Though I do agree on the ignorance part, I can't believe people suddenly care about just three obscure Wii games while gems Like Little King's Story and Sin and Punishment: Star Successor are ignored.

There are hardly any exclusives coming out. Just off of the top of my head

    Xbox 360

    Halo 4

    PS3

    The Last of Us

Ni No kunni (technicality doesn't count because in Japan it's also on the DS)

    Wii

    Xenoblade Chronicles

    Mario Party 9

    The Last Story

Pandora's Tower (doesn't count due to lack of localization confirmation)

Dragon Quest X (doesn't count due to not being confirmed for this year)

Of course this is based off of exclusives that I know of, and not counting the yearly sequels and multiplatform games. And of course some of the games listed like DQX don't count for various reasons. Tallied together and ignoring handhelds there's a total of five exclusives confirmed for this year.

Of course counting multiplat and handhelds it's a different story. And I haven't even touched on the replay value they will most likely have.

  • I think Op Rainfall did help. For one they really raised awareness with the three mentioned games and has inspired many other groups.

As for The Wii you are completely right, however I see the Wii's drought (or coma, whatever you call it) is a blessing and also a curse. A blessing because All the third party gems people have missed are getting played. I've played at least 4or 5 third party gems that I never knew about. It's a curse though because like you said, there is barley any new games coming to Wii and the ones that are a bad multiplatform games, more shovelware, or actual good games.

I hope Nintendo does release all the other unlocalized game, but I'm not sure if they will or not.

There are actually a lot of exclusives on all fronts, you're just not aware of them.  For one thing, the Xbox 360 has probably one of the best exclusives of the year in Witcher 2 which is not appearing on any other console.  Alan Wake's American Nightmare just launched earlier this week--also an Xbox 360 exclusive.  And let's not forget the incoming Kinect Star Wars title.  Say what you will about Kinect--it's Star Wars, it'll be a big deal.

Sony's "worst kept secret" God of War 4 is also looming ready for a reveal.  Journey, Last Guardian, Sly Cooper, and the Jak and Daxter HD collection are there, too.  Not to forget the recently launched reboot of Twisted Metal.

You also need to remember that neither the GDC nor E3 have occurred yet, which are great places to announce new titles for the end of the year.  Microsoft and Sony have aces up their sleeves to be sure.

Nintendo probably does not--at least where the Wii is concerned.  The 3DS and Wii U?  Yeah, they've got some hits to be revealed.  The Wii, though, had nothing until they re-arranged the schedule to include Xenoblade and Last Story.  This had nothing to do with Operation Rainfall.  I think it's pretty clear this was pretty calculated.  Push back some highly-anticipated games for 2012 and then keep a bare minimum attention on the Wii so Nintendo could relocate resources for the new guy.

I can't believe I forgot about some of those titles, I had the feeling I was forgetting some. I never knew Twisted Metal was an exclusive. I'm actually looking forward to some of those titles (I just had to forgot them when the knowledge was useful). Never got around to Witcher 2 on the Pc, Journey has me interested, and I've been planning on getting the Jax and Daxter HD collection (how the hell I forgot about it I'll never know). I need some games for Kinect so if Star Wars turns out good I'll pick it up.

Honestly, given how everyone decided to ignore the Wii and with WiiU coming out the most we'll get from GDC and E3 in terms of the Wii is one final game/Pandora's Tower for U.S. Nintendo will most likely focus on the 3ds, hyping the U and unveiling the Nintendo Network. I seriously hate how most developers ignored the Wii. At least with the U the first thing they did was get the so called 'hardcore' video game developers with them

You have to remember that, initially, developers did not ignore the Wii.  While not all of them put in 100% of their efforts, they still attempted to live up to the ideals Nintendo crafted for the system (motion control, thinking outside the box, etc).  But it was Nintendo fans (and the new casual crowd) that taught developers to, once again, not even bother with a Nintendo system because Nintendo fans do not care about third party games in the face of anything from Nintendo.  And it doesn't matter what the games are.  It could be a quality 3rd party title like Dead Space Extraction against yet another brainless, mediocre, unevolved Mario Party title--Nintendo fans will still ignore the higher quality game for whatever crap Nintendo is regurgitating.  Wii Music--one of the biggest jokes in the industry--sold over 2 million copies.

The first year was slow, but developers gradually warmed up to the Wii.  The next two years, they attempted to deliver the kind of experiences Nintendo as fostering for the console.  But the casual crowd didn't know the good from the crap, and as is typical, Nintendo fans just ignored anything that didn't have Mario or Link on the cover.

These last 2-3 years for the Wii have seen developers gradually lose confidence in the system.  They realized that the only things that sell are dance games, the occasional party game that has a decent advertising budget (Carnival Games), and crap with Mario on it.  It's gotten so bad that Nintendo fans even ignore anything from Nintendo that dares to try something different.  Sin & Punishment sold poorly despite years of fans begging for a sequel.  Treasure is one of the most inspiring and clever developers in this industry, and they deserve better than the way Nintendo fans treated them.

The developers are not to blame.  They tried.  Some got it, some... not so much.  But in the end, the people that really didn't get it were the Nintendo fans.  They're the ones that stuck by the Wii and still didn't buy anything except "Generic Mario Nonsense Title 379" and "Generic Mario Something Game 236."

Sega obviously believed in the system as they put their support behind both The Conduit and MadWorld while delivering several exclusive (and a couple crappy) Sonic games.  UbiSoft actually bothered to publish some unique exclusives on the system to no avail.  Higher quality sequels of No More Heroes and Red Steel got the shaft from Nintendo fans.  Hell, even Rockstar got in on it and delivered Bully and Manhunt 2.  To be fair, Manhunt 2 sold pretty well on the Wii compared to the PS2 counterpart (and way better than the PSP version), but Nintendo fans grossly ignored Rockstar on the DS.

Developers and Publishers were both intrigued and confident.  They tried.  Then the same crap attitude that caused developers and publishers to abandon the N64 and GameCube arose yet again--Nintendo fans don't like video games unless they're made by Nintendo, and even then, only if they have Mario, Link, or Pokemon in them.

Looking back, that does seem like the case. Sin and Punishment Star Successor was amazing, but no one bothered to buy it, not even the 'hardcores.' Same story with Little King's Story, Drawn to Life, etc. I consider 'casual' games to be gateway games, games to get people not used to the medium interested, it's just that it created an entirely different crowd as a side effect. Though why anyone would buy Wii Music is beyond me. Nintendo tried to share Video Games with the general population, they just weren't willing to go beyond Wii sports.

The Nintendo fanbase is very hypocritical, they demand new IP's but when they come out they ignore them. Heck, Nintendo kept it's big names away from the 3ds launch to give the other IP's a chance to shine. Same with change, people complained Legend of Zelda was the same thing over and over again, with Skyward Sword they had plot advancement outside of dungons, spot on motion controls, and loads of other new features. Yet it was called the same thing as previous games.

The Wii suffered due to idiot fanboys and a failed attempt to get the general population interested in Video Games. At least Nintendo still has a strong presence in the handheld market.

Finally, someone else gets it.  I waited a long time for Sin & Punishment, and I bought it and loved it.  But yes, the Nintendo fans are very hypocritical.  They championed and cheered the Wii when Nintendo said "this is going to change things!"  Then when developers dared to try anything different, they fried foul and bemoaned the choices.  They wanted all the same games all the same ways as the Xbox 360 and PS3.  They didn't want motion control, they didn't want change, they didn't want unique, they didn't want creative, they didn't want anything different.

And I've talked to so many fans/fanboys who said these exact things.  They didn't want a different Call of Duty--they wanted the exact same thing as everybody else, despite the fact that they wanted different things when the Wii was first announced.  They ignored any different or unique game and bought only the crap that was the most familiar and un-creative.  Another Mario Party, Twilight Princess being almost exactly the same Zelda that they've been making since the N64.  Yet another Mario Kart game.  Sequels, remakes, and anything that was "stereotypical Nintendo" with no effort or growth at all.

In the end, the Wii suffered the same fate as the N64 and GameCube.  Great systems with great potential--and all of it killed because fanboys stayed ignorant and closed-minded.  I've heard over and over again that "if the 3rd parties just gave us the same games, we'd buy 'em," but even that wasn't true.  Because that's exactly what the GameCube offered, and 3rd party games and anything not "typical Nintendo" was ignored en masse.

Nothing but excuses come from them.  No third party game is ever "good enough," or "same enough as everyone else" for a Nintendo fanboy.  Despite the fact that lower-quality Nintendo crap will still be purchased by them and they never bat an eye.  Again, Wii Music?  Mario Party?  Lame-duck Mario Sports games?  The only reason low-quality crap like that would sell better than a quality Dead Space prequel shooter--is fanboyism.

  • Fanboyism is the worst thing that has ever happened to the industry and RezidentHazard (rides again) pointed that out perfectly. It's not just Nintendo fanboys though, there's Microsoft and Sony fanboys that do the same thing (not as common but still). I really tried not to blindly follow Nintendo's every move and game (Wii music looked pitiful) on the Wii. I might have been late, but I supported Sin & punishment, Monster Hunter and several other third party games years after they came out.

I really hope these companies don't get hurt from the Wii and don't release any exclusive games on Wii U
