I have both games and I love them, but I think you should get Mario Kart 7. It is so much fun (I played it for 10 hours on my first day, but I played Super Mario for 3 hours on my first day, this was on Christmas) and the online multiplayer extends the fun even more. Also, if you beat Super Mario then you probably wouldn't want to play it anymore, if you unlock everything in Mario Kart, you'll still want to play it because of multiplayer.

Super Mario 3D Land is absolutely phenomenal, so you can't go wrong with it. The platforming is a little easier than in games past, but the design is top notch, the 3D effects are superb, and it's just a darn fun game to play. With that said, like Apricot mentioned, Mario Kart's multiplayer is great, and can keep you entertained for a long time if that's what you fancy. Obviously, both solid buys, but I think you should get SM3DL.
