Primes story's were decent but you never truly learned anything about samus except that shes a bounty hunter who just happens to run into ridley at on point or another. You never got into her head or knew her.  In other M you see under all that high tech armor that shes a normal person with feeling and emotions  and showing her struggles of coping with not being able to protect the baby metroid.

Metroid has never needed elaborate plots or dialogue to get the story across. So trying so hard now seems a little strange. And I don't think Team Ninja is a team known for making the best stories. I still don't understand Ninja Gaiden II's nonsensical plot.

  • Actually, this isn't a bad game. It's a great game. Better than some other things on the Wii.

  • I just finished it and it's the worst ending I've seen in a video game, I think, ever.

It's cliche, melodramatic, obnoxious, and retarded.  Other M is officially the worst game in the franchise, now completely edging out Fusion, as far as I'm concerned.

In a game fraught with questionable design choices, sometimes annoying acting, and completely hackneyed story-telling, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  I predicted part of the ending, and I was pi**ed to see that I was right.  This is the worst thing that's ever happened to Samus Aran.

They need to either give the series back to Retro, or kill it altogether.

  • From the beginning they said the story was going to tell more about samus past. Im tired of gamers nitpicking at every small detail. The game wasnt the best but it was still good. The story is meant to show more about samus past and her history. not just another game you stick in the tray and and run through a game that has no story whatsoever.

  • Yeah, Meta77, it tells next to nothing about her past and the ending is insulting to anyone with the brains to understand what makes for GOOD cinematic storytelling.  This is B-movie predictable cliche crap and nothing better.

The Metroid series, my favorite series, has a true black sheep.  Other M is Metroid's Resident Evil 5.

  • It told about the metroid baby. Her baby! which is a element they reused throughout the rest of the series.

  • I have finished the game "completely" including the post-narrative gameplay and "bonus secret, though pretty cool" boss battle.  I picked up 97% of the items forsaking something like 4 (all of which were unnecessary missiles) items because trying to figure them out with the lame scanning in the game was getting on my nerves.  Had the exploration actually been fun like in pretty much every other Metroid game, I probably would've picked up those last few items.

Again, I want to levee my hatred for the completely useless "emergency tank" system in the game, forcing you to recharge under constant attack, which is what you get with 90% of the games bosses, the final (Super Metroid throwback) boss included.  The after-game segment is largely unnecessary shallow fetch-questing in lieu of actual exploration--and the items are so spread out over the Bottle Ship that it's surprisingly boring running through everything to pick up yet another stupid missile when what I really need for the final boss is a regular energy tank.  Finding a reserve tank at any point in the game was like being flipped off by Nintendo.  "Ha ha jerk, you have another reserve tank, but when you really need it, there isn't a chance in hell you'll be allowed to use it!"

The game overall, 5/10.  A true low point in the Metroid universe and as some reviewers have correctly stated, that without the Metroid license on this--it would've been seen for what it really is--just a very average, totally shallow run-n-gun shooter with Ninja Gaiden-inspired gameplay and a forgettable story.  Shame that they squandered the one chance they gave us to get to know the bounty hunter.

  • Sorry Demon for once your a little late. I already said that early on. I'm just saying I am used to storys like this.

  • Alright so I beat the game 100% because well I just do that with Metroid Games and am working my way through hard mode(which is totally unfair cause they remove all upgrades from game) and I've gotta say while the story is definitely not going to stand up to Dragon Age and Mass Effect, it does use plot elements and story telling devices that are common in japan. That said it is stupid and the ending was a huge disappointment, but aside from that I can honestly say the game was a blast to play I found the combat really fun, my only complaint being that I wish their was a difficulty between normal and hard because the normal game is way to easy( except for the queen because metroids w/o a quick missile fire button is cheap), but The hard setting is obnoxious (Some bosses did whole tanks in a hit so limiting you to one for the whole game = predictable Team Ninja BS). I never had terrible trouble with the stop and aim missile fire, except for the aforementioned metroids, and i really enjoyed the screw attack, dodge charge, overblast, and finishing moves. So all in all I'd say its definitely not a bad game and I would suggest it for people to play but it had room for improvement as well. Hopefully Nintendo keeps this up and we see more crossover titles like how about bioware makes a zelda? or retro and valve make a metroid? that'd be sweet.

oh and @Resident Hazard i agree the emergency tank system is useless in principle because if your in a situation where your health got that low the chances of you finding time to stand still for 5 seconds is highly unlikely, rather enemies just drop health like in prime, but after you get 3 or more tanks you shouldn't ever really hit that low of health since the game is so freaking easy. I died twice the whole time, once in a cheap death that I didn't see coming and the metroid queen took me two tries to kill due to those stupid metroids and the lack of a quick missile fire button.

  • while i still think that corruption was an overall better wii game, i still realllllly enjoyed other m. but i wouldnt mind if they made samus more badass and less whiny in the next game they make.

@ fiercy diety retro making a metroid game would be sweet!

  • A new Retro Metroid game on a Wii with better graphics would be amazing. Or at least remake Super Metroid in HD.

Excellent editorial over at IGN accurately breaking down how they, essentially, violated the crap out of Samus' character.  The fanboys, as is to be predicted, have their panties in a bunch and nothing intelligent to say in response.

I honestly died quite a few times because the control system was atrocious and without a worthwhile scanning system a la the Prime trilogy, I was never quite sure if I should focus the boss battle on the running around and shooting or focusing more on missile launching.  That, and the quick-dodge feature routinely failed in first person mode.  Making that motion-based was idiotic.  I felt the game was cheap all around.  For instance, when fighting that stupid construction vehicle, I attempted to dodge it using the quick dodge during the running around, and it routinely caused me to be hit twice instead of, you know, actually dodging the freaking thing.  It's unrealistic fast movements just smacked of Team Ninja's ability to sacrifice all logic in order to make truly grossly frustrating gameplay.

Like you said, attacking the metroids during the queen battle was such a mess.  The whole auto-targeting crap failed left and right during that battle, which was otherwise one of the few highlights of the game.  The queen took me two tries because I never imagined that the first half of that battle--the part with the metroids--would be so ridiculously difficult.

I only had trouble during regular gameplay (non-boss crap) like once, right after that atrocious forced run through the lava section before we were moronically "authorized" to use the Varia suit because the end of that drops you in arguably the toughest regular-enemy room in the game, and after you die in there--you don't get to restart in that room with full life--but with your "oh what the hell is this crap, why can't I use the bloody Varia suit?!?!" damage.  Aside from that stupid room, the bulk of the regular run-n-shoot-mindlessly gameplay was actually pretty dull because it was all so mindless.

Ugh.  I can't, man.  There's just too many things wrong with this freaking game.

Unnecessarily remaking a perfect game is asinine.  Super Metroid should never, ever, ever be touched.  Now, if you must have it, just play Metroid Prime 1, which in many was, was exactly that--a remake of Super Metroid following a great many cues and elements from the game.

Yeah dude, except that they barely told anything about her past except an amateurish nonsensical story about her "old military days" with a cliche group of "anime-themed space marine types."  And then they butchered her character by taking a formerly strong female character and turning her into a whining, weak, defenseless, pathetic female stereotype.  That shouldn't be acceptable to anyone in this modern world.  Nintendo had the foresight to create a strong female protagonist way back in the 80's, and they've allowed Team Ninja to destroy all of that in one fell swoop.  Try to remember how many times she literally cowered in fear, was dependent on blind luck, or required the protection of the big manly soldiers in the game.  Anyone defending this story either spends all their time watching immature anime-themed nonsense, or they actually have no idea how a good narrative and good character development is accomplished.

You want good storytelling in a video game?  Look at Mass Effect, Bioshock 1 and 2, Transformers: War for Cybertron, Fallout 3, Alan Wake, Eternal Darkness, Grand Theft Auto III ~ IV, or the Metroid Prime trilogy.  Crap like this is the reason that the core of modern gaming has shifted from Japan to the US and Europe.  The rest of us adults are tired of childish anime storylines and crave actual depth and thought in our games.

Just because they put story in the game doesn't automatically make it good.  Especially when the writing is this insanely bad.

You guys don't have to like it just because it's Nintendo, you know.  You are allowed to look past that and be objective, you know.  Face it, without the Metroid label and Nintendo publishing the game, it wouldn't be considered very highly in any of it's facets.

  • Any women who has her baby killed would become emotionally distraught after seeing it first hand.
