How to prevent the infamous Red Ring Of Death.
Any ideas on how to stop this inconvenience. Have you replaced or added heatsinks, do you keep a fire extinguisher near by during gameplay. New cooling fans? Is your 360 a paper weight at the moment. Did you purchase a PS3 instead?
Yes. Don't do a thing. Give the system plenty of space to breathe. Make sure to run your AC while playing and don't run your heater (close the heater vent in that room). I have been using my system for 8 months with tons of marathons and haven't had a problem. Do not use the cooling fans. A couple of people have lost their systems to the cooling fans not working.
Do the rag trick duhh lawl
Dude what is the rag trick?
I got a small shelf that it sits on. It has metal brackets with space between each bracket so it can breathe easier. The biggest thing is not to let it overheat like Morbidystandard already said. With the winter months coming, you probably don't have to turn on your AC while playing. Instead, just don't turn on your heater and use a blanket if you get cold.
I got my shelf from Target. Here's a picture to get an idea.

He is right
Yeah, the only thing you can really do is give it space to breath and hope it doesn't bite it. Newer models don't seem to have those problems as much as the older ones. So depending on which one you have, good luck. Just hope it doesn't break with out the RRoD because more often then not its not under warranty so you have to shell out the cash yourself to get it fixed. Thats what happen to my refurbished unit. Disk read error sucks.

I don't have mine on a shelf. It lays down out in the open on the floor, with lots of breathing room. I'm not a big marathon kind of guy but there have been times when I've pretty much had it on for the entire day, since it's also my primary DVD player.
I still have the core 360's from 2006.
NEVAR FORGET
My RROD for the 4th time last night...it is a 2005 release day system. it had the breathing room and all that jazz but in the end she just kicked the can. Thousands of hours on that thing did it in the end.

sent mine off the other day for the second time. First unit was 2005 release system, this last one was a 2007 model. They replaced it the first time. The "rag" trick just overheats your 360 even more and can really foul things up for you.
Everyone is in agreement that RROD precipitates from overheating?
So what is the rag trick
wrap the 360 in a towel, it then overheats and your gpu/cpu gets fried. Goes into a fail-safe mode basically allows you to get a few more hours of gameplay or It kills your xbox and voids the warranty. There are youtube videos of people trying it
just got mine back in august after rrod; now got it on a milk crate (for air flow from the bottom) with the brick seperately elevated and a fan keeping both cool - no prob so far but only time will tell. Also installing every game I've got to the hard drive - don't know if that makes any difference.

Oh sorry, I forgot to says install whatever games you plan on playing at for a long time. It seems that the system is about 25% cooler or so, put your hand behind it to see what I mean. It also decreases load time. I have 4 games on my 60GHD and have about 28Gs left. Thanks for the towel trick info.
