The lights are on
What is the best ending you have seen in a game?
Good question. The problem here is quantifying the term "best". Are we referring to saddest ending? The ending with the most intense final battle? Perhaps the ending that most accurately tied the narrative together? Or even a culmination of all of these factors?
The next issue worth addressing is at what point does the ending of a game begin? Can the ending of a game include the entire sequence leading to that point? Is it only fair to include an experience's epilogue and post-climactic events? Could one argue that in the entirety of a series the definitive title that ends the series chronologically be considered and ending?
So in order to give my best possible answer, I've considered all of these questions and come up with a simple clarification on the guidelines I've chosen to follow in making my choice: The ending of the game starts at the beginning of the final level / chapter / act / etc. and continues until the title's credits and must perfectly conclude the game's narrative events as well as push the limits of the game's core gameplay design without breaking any boundaries previously established throughout the experience until that point.
Taking all of this into account, my choice for the single greatest ending of a video game in the history of the medium is this:
I would probably say Shadow of the Colossus. The ending is just incredible.
Portal 2. I was thinking about it for so long afterwards. I really hope Valve makes another one.
One died in India. Three was tracked down in Brazil. I am the only one left. I am The Second Musketeer
I think the best endings are from the Batman games and the Zelda games. Mainly Skyward Sword.
Red dead redemption was pretty awesome, dieing in a hail of gunfire while taking down feds. Fitting end to Mr Marston.
when he ending starts and best to you is strictly your decision
Though I have seen several awesome endings, Portal 2 take the cake, (pardon the pun)
I agree with Red Dead, but I liked Bioshock's ending
I also agree with Red Dead, but also halo reach, which like in Red Dead, you die with your guns ablaze. But when Marston dies, it's not truly the ending, there is a secret ending and during that one they roll the credits.
Yea the and the true ending is very satisfying, I just hate having to play as his whiny, annoying son haha
Halo reach is definitly up there for me as well. Holding out on legendary was a lot of fun.
Red Dead Redemption for me
metal gear solid 4. having played all the games when they were new made it feel special. it completely tied the knot and closed the book on the whole series. oh, and even though it wasn't the ending. the twist in kotor was stunningly amazing. that was the only twist in any form of media they made me scream "f-ing awesome." and i don't even like star wars.
yeah, you're right. I totally forgot about about that KotOR one. good point.
