Dont forget games back then were about individual bragging rights who has the top score or who had a perfest game. It might be also because there were far less selection in titles you can choose from.IN the present however its all about multiplayer action rather than the single story line that apeal to the gamers.Online makes the perfect example to this scenario.

There are still games that arre still hard to play try Ninja Gaiden or even Devil may Cry those are the hardest game I can think off.Dude if those games are easy to you than your a master of gaming seriously.

WTF! I downloaded Metroid (the original, NES Metroid, that is) for the Wii. I usually last about eight minutes. One thing about games back then: they were much less forgiving. Maybe that is what has changed. These days, the worst case scenario a gamer will run into is a Rainbow Six situation where death means starting the mission over again. In the old days, death meant starting the whole game over again.

In the days of checkpoints, saves, and difficulty settings, gaming is not what it used to be? For better or for worse? Only time will tell. Do you think you will still play Halo 3, Gears of War, CoD 4, Portal, and Benjo & Kazooie Nuts and Bolts fifteen years from now? I'll check back then.

WTF! I remember there were games I couldn't beat way back when. Maybe some of this is with age, but I remember there were some real tough games. Of course I haven't tested the age theory because I haven't really gone back to play any so....

And I disagree to the poster above me. Complexity will usually equal a higher level of difficulty.

WTF! When something is hard nowadays we don't even notice because we can play it a few times again and figure it out. In retro games you played until something killed you. Playing two hours to die at the same spot makes it hard to switch up strategy and get better when its another two hours before you get there again...and that's if you get there again.

WTF! Right? WRONG!

I was able to beat Halo 3 in a few days, (or hours) including Cod4. They have complex controls, and some unique things. In retro games, they have simple controls, and the objectives are simple, so retro games are easy. Right? WRONG!

I can beat Gears of War, Halo 3, Cod 4, Portal, and Banjo & Kazooie Nuts and Bolts. But I can't beat Super Mario World, Altered Beast, Comix Zone, or anything else? WTF! WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME? Those games are so simple, but why am I having such a hard time beating them?

Mario just has to jump on his enemies, but I can't do that! WHY!

ARGH! Have any of you had this problem?

Now I think I understand. Games back then are supposed to get harder as you play them. Games nowadays just don't do that anymore. The final levels of those games just don't get any harder and they stay the same. Games today are more about excitement then difficulty.

Another reason is because your options are limited. Sure, in Super Mario World, you can just fly through all the levels but that's just no fun. If all you do in that game is jump and throw things, the game is going to make it harder for you. But most of todays games are all about realism, like if there's no difficulty at all. The last hard game I played was Call of Duty for Xbox. Levels get harder in that game, right?
