The lights are on
So far this year I've seen God of War 3 and Mass effect 2 get 10/10 ratings from some reviewers and I was wondering that if 10/10 means a perfect game, are these games perfect? Not only those two but many other games like GTA 4, uncharted 2 e.t.c. have gotten 10/10.
I consider games an art form like a movie or music and just like how I can't say I watched a perfect movie or I heard a perfect song, I can't say I played a perfect game. To be fair movies and music aren't rated out of 10 generally as much as video games but I'd still argue my point if they did.
I love the 10/10 rating system in games but I think some reviewers don't take it seriously enough or may be they don't consider some things like story, controls, gameplay, enjoyment beause if they did I don;t think God of War 3 would get a 10/10 in the story section coz its somehow predictable which would lower the overall score. I'm only using GOW 3 as an example but I think you get my arguement.
So, do you guys think that there are games out there that deserve a 10/10 rating because I don't think they will ever be a 10/10 game. may be 9.9 if it's really amazing but not 10.
I would be depressed if anyone truly thought ANYTHING was perfect. What would be the reason to keep making games? Or anything for that matter? Meh. Its just a ranking system from "sux0rz" to "awesome beans." Doesnt mean perfection.
Byaringan- The reason that I put the quote from the GI magazine is because if you are going to use thier numbers as a rating scale then you need to use thier opinions too. They give you what 10/10 means, and if you don't follow that 10/10 rating system means 'Outstanding' then you shouldn't use thier system and try decide on the purchasing or renting the game based upon other aspects (such as how long the game is, what kind of game is it, are you even interested in it). When It all comes down to it, your the one that ends up liking it or disliking it, no matter what the numbers say.
Its called Hello Kitty Island Adventure. Engaging gameplay, great story, and fantastic graphics.
See Joe Juba's "In Defense of the Imperfect 10". I agree with his thoughts on the subject.
"I agree that no game is perfect – but perfection isn't the point. No one expects perfection in any form of entertainment. Does the Academy only give Best Picture to perfect movies? Is the Hugo award only bestowed upon perfect science fiction? Of course not...perfection is impossible to assess, especially when it comes to subjective media like literature, film, art, etc. Games aren't any different in that respect."

Basically, if a game surpasses what I thought I could expect from a game, I say it is deserving of a perfect score. So far thats limited to Sonic2[for the addition of co-op], Ocarina of Time[to much stuff to list], Metal Gear Solid[for unbelievable story-telling prowess], Majora's mask[ for the incredibly depth filled world] and San Andreas[for the unending things to do]. For me anyway.

I suppose there are no perfect games, but there are 10s. I'd give Resident Evil 4, BioShock and The Wind Waker each a 10. They're not perfect, but to me they represent the height of what a game should be.
