  • You have to be pretty intellectually challenged, and very insecure to dislike someone for being a Gay Gamer. Hell the same is true for disliking anyone who is gay. Gamers are gamers, and more importantly...people are people. I don't hate anyone for being what they are, I actually applaud it. You shouldn't have to hide who you are.

  • Welcome to America where being Gay AND a Gamer can possibly get you killed or blackballed...disgusting.

Oh how far have we fallen?

  • I'm more afraid of "straight" gamers.  I lost in a Gears 2 match one time and some Marine (I knew he was a Marine cuz he kept yelling it) told me to "Get your s**t pushed!"  I'm still disturbed by that.

  • I agree with ice.  The "straight" gamers who love to quote Denzel are pretty d*** scary.  They need to just hook up with some guy and go with it.

  • ice and morbid thats funny my dads a marine and i can see him doing that get ur *** pushed wtf haha

    D.G.V.

  • It must suck for some gay gamers. All the time I hear people using gay and *** as insults, even if they don't dislike gay people. It just becomes part of their vocabulary because they hear it all the time.

If you post it, they will troll.

  • Does it really matter if someone is gay and a gamer?

  • I really don't care if someone is gay even if they're not a gamer. I have a gay cousin for godsake! I take it everybody on this thread are democrats? Hmmph... I think i like this thread.

Anyone remember me? Brandon09 and i might as well put in my old signature.

I don't stay away from trouble i just don't participate in it.

  • I actually just posted another topic like this (my bad), but I'm glad to see there already is one.  Let me share my story, because it's kind of similar.  I'm just going to respond to all of the comments in here so far in one blanket post.

Gays, Gaming, and the Gay Community -- As a gamer, I have often found that when you talk about gaming in front of other gays, they look at you like you've lost your mind.  At least in my experience, a large portion of the gay community doesn't feel like gaming can be a part of their identity.  My best friend Jason's boyfriend still doesn't know that Jason plays WoW, and they've been together since August.  And I can understand why he hasn't told him.  I once asked a guy I was interested in if he played video games.  His response was to quizzically raise an eyebrow at me, as if it was ridiculous to even ask such a thing.  And this response wasn't unique to him.

Gays, Gaming, and the Straight Community -- It's also true, however, that gays tend to be a splinter group in the straight community.  While a lot of people don't give a rat's @--, every time you hear some ***-bag on XBLA or PSN or Ventrillo calling someone gay or a f-g, you can't help but feel a little insulted.  I guess I feel like, if you mean to call someone stupid, or to say they're a bad player, or say that you hate them, say those things, but don't use a word which describes a homosexual, because the moment you do, you're equating being homosexual with being those really negative things.  So, even though the straight community might not care whether or a not a gamer is a "gaymer," language like that doesn't make us feel very welcome.

Gays and Gay Characters in Games -- This one is a really tough situation.  There are lots of different kinds of gay people.  The way I see, they tend to fall somewhere on a sliding scale of flamboyantness.  You're going to have those gays who are very flamboyant, and who dress and talk and act a certain way -- there is no doubt that these people are gay.  But, then you're also going to have those people who are very "straight acting" as it is called.  For all intents and purposes they look, dress, talk, and act just like your typical straight boy -- it's not as easy to "tell" that these gays are, in fact, gays.  And, I think the majority of gays fall somewhere in between tehse two extremes.  So, when gays are just as diverse as straights, how do you decide how to portray a gay character?  If you make the character very straight acting, it's entirely possible that no one will pick up on the fact that the character is gay.  But, if you make the character very flamboyant, everyone will pick up on it, but then you run the risk of offending people who are gay, but who don't see themselves the way you portrayed that character.

I think the problem of a lack of gay characters in video games is a three-part problem: On the one hand there are developers who probably don't give a sh-t about it, and don't feel a need to put gays in their games.  And on the other hand there are developers who just don't know how to approach gay characters tastefully, in a way that isn't going to be offensive.  And then there are probably also developers who are afraid to include gay characters in their games because they're afraid of the negative response (flash: a lot of people don't like gays).  It's all very complicated.

I've responded to the things that stuck out the most to me as a gay gamer, but I don't know if I've answered anyone's questions.

  • Yes this thread is pretty positive on gay gamer rights. Personally i have no problem with it, and I think the same can be said for the business as they do somewhat cater to it.

  • if yur a gay gamer or a straight gamer it doesn't matter yur still a gamer.

  • I used to use gay as an insult to people while playing online.  It wasn't until one of my friends mom heard me say something like "wow your so gay" and then smacked me upside the head that i realized how wrong it was. I know it's cheesy but i would like to apoligize to everybody i ever called gay while gaming :)

  • theres one thing i leared in life be happy with yourself and F!@$ what others think. as long as you enjoy your partner and you enjoy your hobby then your living your life the way you want. and remember happiness is key.

  • I don't care if your gay, as long as your good at the game

  • Dragon Age: Origins has a bisexual character.  The opportunity for pursuing a sexual relationship with that character is on the table as well.  It's discussed in a tasteful way, and if you choose to go down that path, there's a love scene.  I was very surprised, but thought it was done in a respectful way.

Fable 2 also has bisexual and gay characters that you can sleep with or even marry.

In many ways, those two examples in video games are even more progressive than gay depiction on tv or movies.  You never see gay marriage depicted as normal on TV like it was in Fable 2.
