the elder scrolls: oblven, halo 3; odst , coh, and mass effect.
Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid series. Without the story the game is just a pointless 'got to be sneaky' game.

I couldn't even tell you what the story in Oblivion was. Someone turned into a dragon for some reason or another. The story seemed so arbitrary. Like they wanted to amass a bunch of whatever they considered totally awesome into a pile, and then fill it full of glitches.
I can't think of many games where a story isn't supposed to be important, whether or not it ends up sucking. Among my favorite stories are, however, most found in Final Fantasy games. They're like soap operas without the shame associated.
i don't know, most rpgs stories are so convaluted you can't even tell what the eff is going on anyway, same with metal gear series... great story, but what the hell are they talkin bout. relating to the characters in the games i play helps to convey the sense of realism when i am playing the game. Bioshock, assasin's creed, fallout 3, uncharted 2. I love story, but i love gameplay too. parasite eve had a pretty cool story, but sucky bo bucky gameplay ... off the top of my head.
MGS, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Uncharted 2 (The first one was meh), etc.

Bioshock, Devil May Cry 4, and Fallout 3
Anyone who plays Final Fantasy for the story care to try and explain it to us?

I think Final Fantasy games are great for stories because they are one of the few games that know how to connect the player with the characters in the game. Final Fantasy VII is the perfect example because it has expanded into many game spin-offs and even movies. Not to mention the memorabilia attached to the game.
Bioshock is also very good. I also that the storyline that is attached to all of the Legend of Zelda games, very simple, but very engrossing.

Oh yeah I'm right with you on this one. Another game I can think of that has a great story and one that will become even better is Mass Effect. I really like the idea that your choices in the game's series will effect the outcome of your story. It really makes all the decisions you make seem more important.
I think story is something that should be more apparent in games these days. Sure it's fun to get games like Halo that just give you really fun gameplay but no real story sometimes but, it's a lot more engaging of a game when it comes with a great story.
I think RPG's are the ones to invoke story into games though. You won't find an FPS with an outstanding story. And RPGs, I would say, are my favorite genre; with Fallout 3 being my favorite game. Though awesome RPGs don't come around too often, when they do they are always outstanding. They are games that are really fun and last a long time because so much amazing work was put into them like Fallout 3 and on Jan. 26th, Mass Effect 2.
I might just say that Bioware maybe the kings of story telling. With Mass Effect obviously being really involved with story and, also I rented Dragon Age: Origins which, wasn't the funnest game at times, but had a really great story with awesome cinematics.
Bioware always has a good story in all of its games. Okami had a great story, so did Lost Odyssey, and FF has some great stories.
FF XIII won't disappoint in its story either
Twilight Princess has the best story of any game i have ever played.
And that's what she said.
Final fantasy X (my fav final fantasy game), Uncharted 1-2, GTA 4, Half life 1-2, Prince of Persia
CaNdLE + LiiGHT = OWNAGE
plot driven RPGs are always what have caught my attention. Of course other aspects are important but that has always been a big issue for me. I love the Final Fantasy series for this reason
I love games with well crafted storied as much as the next person, but sometimes that is not what i want in a game. If im playing a fighting game i might want to virtually punch people in the face and dont want a complex story about why im doing it. just saying bad story doesnt always take away from a game
You're nuts! Parasite Eve was awesome! A few of the FF games have been good on the narrative side.. Other than the side missions, probably my ultimate favorite is Mass Effect. Everything in it is designed to keep you in the action of the story.. everything has hooks back into the lore and it's world. More recently, Brutal Legend was pretty fun, although it got very forced towards the end when the Drowning Doom faction came about.. but it was a very fun story - a saturday morning cartoon fun.
