The lights are on
Sony and Microsoft have always been a step ahead when it comes to graphics, but I have always been a hardcore Nintendo fan. Raised on the GameBoy Color and GameCube, I was perfectly content with the games and graphics. Then came the Wii. It showed a whole new perspective on gaming. The motion controls made gaming more interactive, and opened new possibilities. A few months ago, I read about Sony and Microsoft developing new motion tech; Project Natal and such. Honestly, I felt a little steamed. Nintendo had created a system with no parallel, and I felt as though Sony and Microsoft kinda ripped them off. Now with Sony releasing the PSPgo, it seems like their trying to outdo the DS. Is it just me, or is anyone else thinking that Nintendo's in a chokehold?
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!!
"Now with Sony releasing the PSPgo, it seems like their trying to outdo the DS"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
*breathes in*
Anywho, the same thing can be pretty much said about any medium.
I don't think Nintendo is being put in a chokehold. Look at how much the other systems have sold compared to the Wii. Granted I feel the other systems willing to expand into the casual market is good for the whole industry overall. There is nothing wrong with competiton everyone will benefit from this.

so conforming to emerging industry norms is "ripping off" now?
motion control doesnt belong to nintendo, just like 3D graphics dont belong to nintendo. Sure they were first, but that doesnt automatically entitle you to sole possession of an innovation.
Remember the U-Force? That didn't work
And that's what she said.
agreed with poster "dragonballjoseph", this argument can be used for almost anything, sadly. Nintendo can only hope to outdo their competitors but there is nothing saying they cant be directly challenged with similar features. Lets see how it goes for the other companies
Im sorry, but so far it looks like Microsoft and Sony have better tech in their motion controls. I hate my Wii's controller.
This battle......will be EPIC!
I notice all anyone is talking about is hardware. The reason Nintendo is so successful is because of software. Back when they announced the specs for the Wii, and everyone mocked it for being basically Gamecube 1.5, everyone thought that the 360 and PS3 were going to crush Nintendo into third-party status. The opposite occurred, however. Nintendo is the king of hardware right now. And it didn't come from just having motion control, it came from having the software people wanted to play with that motion control. That's always been Nintendo's strong point and that's the reason Nintendo still matters today while other game companies of yesteryear, such as Sega and Atari, had to bow out of the console race. Nintendo is about making great, family-fun software that everyone can enjoy. That's why Sony and Microsoft coming out with their own motion control schemes isn't going to put Nintendo in a chokehold. They may have the hardware, but Nintendo is successful, still today, because of software.

I'm still flabbergasted as to what games it is on Wii that people are playing that makes the system sell so much. I got rid of my Wii after about 6 months because there was only one game I enjoyed in that entire timeframe and that was No More Heroes. Since then I have played other people's Wiis to play Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles but thats about it. I know myself and my circle of friends represent a small section of the gaming populace but for their to only be 4 titles that caught our interest (there was Smash Brothers 3 as well) over the life cycle of a console seems very strange considering its success. Then again I really hate motion control so that probably hurts a lot as well.
They don't care about the best, they are just trying to provide fun games for all.
Look at the E3 2008 confrence.
If they wanted better they would have done so, but they care about gamers saving money by not adding extra stuff and cool things and a downgraded $300 DSi.
The Friend codes suck, but yhey want you to play with an actual person in the same room.
Nintendo is for fun, not fad.
And they have full backwards compadibility and optional GC/classic controlls for most good wii games.
Laws, random and full of opportunity, all people can be: simply by being themselves.... Also ponies, friendship, and care.
Motion controls need to just go away all together. Most Wii games were ruined by the last minute tacking on of the motion controls. For example, NFS Nitro could have a decent game if your weren't forced to use the motion controls.
Well, just so you know Sony hasn't always been a step ahead when it comes to graphics. The N64 had a higher polygon count than the PS1 and the Cube had a higher polygon count than the PS2. So basically, the PS3 is Sonys first system that has better graphics than the competing Nintendo system.
I don't think Nintendo is in any kind of chock hold. In fact, I think Nintendo is the one doing the chocking. Nintendo has always been copied. Exept for online play, Nintendo has always lead the way in terms of gameplay. They were the first to use the D-Pad, they were the first to use the analog stick, they were the first to use multiple face buttons, they were the first to use shoulder/trigger buttons, and everyone copied them now they are industry standards. Nintendo is responsible for the standard controller that everyone today loves. Now they are using motion control. Of course their competition is going to copy them. Nintendo IS the standard.

Uh... seeing as how the DS sold like 1 million units on black friday weekend... I would say NO. The PSPgo will fail like the PSP was failing... the DS has such a remarkable lead in sales and kid friendly game base that it will be in no danger. Then there is the fact that Nintendo has always dominated the handheld market (remember how the gameboy beat out the Sega Gamegear, even though the Gamegear had color and better graphics before the GBcolor ever released). Nintendo is smart and knows how to make a niche market that it can not only control, but also make money off...
