The lights are on
Looks like this media forum is off to a slow start, so this looks like a great time for me to share one of my favorite Black Metal bands: Desolation Triumphalis
The song, Arcane of Supreme Rise, is off particular interest to me because of its rather forlorn feeling of looming sadness. This kicks in particularly around 1:30 when some non-traditional metal instruments kick in to give it it's unique sound.
These guys are pretty awesome, but I prefer more straight forward stuff like Celtic Frost, Venom and Goatwhore.
Venom is pretty good, but I prefer Mercyful Fate when it comes to "First Wave" Black Metal, and I of course use that term lightly because it is pretty much NWBHM about Satan. But I am sure you already know that.
I love the atmosphere of "First Wave" black metal more so than any other wave of BM. It only got progressively downhill for me following. Burzum, Bathory plz.
I don't know why, though, but Desolation seems to strike me as very boring....the whole overall product. Bleh. Is there more?
I like the somberness of the song, but I can see how some would find it boring. It is certainly a rougher production than the bigger acts in BM.
I love rough production, honestly. I honestly find the beauty in BM to come from very lo-fi, rough production. I guess the atmosphere doesn't quite captivate sadness for me as much as some other bands I've listened to.
After all, there is an entire genre called Depressive Black Metal. <_<
And funeral doom is pretty dark, but it is a rather rare genre of music. Ahab being the only band I know of to be slightly above obscure.
