The lights are on
I am ready to start a new book series and I have heard good things about both...I do watch Game of Thrones on HBO and I have not seen The Hunger Games movie and was wondering which route i should go?
"No, I buy you out, you don't buy me out".
The Hunger Games is a very fast and easy read, it's written for adolescents (but can be enjoyed by all). While the story is very entertaining, the writing is just average. This book could probably be finished in a less than a week.
Game of Thrones is a much more mature story. Battle, blood, backstabing, sex, swearing, and scheming are all to be found the book. I'd say the writing is much better than hunger games, but there are so many characters and locations it takes a bit longer to get into the book. This is also a much more difficult book to read, there's definitely some words that I had to look up. The book is also around 900 pages long, compared to about 300 for hunger games. I think that the book has just as much in common with shows like The Sopranos, as it does with any fantasy universe; which is why it has such a large audience. Overall I liked Game of thrones better, it has a deeper and much more complex story.
I hope that helps.
A Song of Ice and Fire
Thank you both for your opinions! I appreciate your time and advice!
I just finished Hunger Games, it's awesome. I'm about to start Game of Thrones haha
Great minds must think alike =P
check out my blog!
Rainheart, I'll never forget you.
I finished the Hunger Games a long time ago, but I'm into Game of Thrones now, and it's very, very awesome. As Dagnastyep said, Game of Thrones is much more complex and has a deeper story than the Hunger Games.
i would say the hunger games,i have not read the game of thrones i want to though
Definitely do Hunger Games first because it's quick and will grease the engine to get you ready for the daunting task of the entire Game of Thrones series.
If you're interested in The Hunger Games film; irrespective of whether or not you read Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones is the first book in that series- and the name of the HBO series) before or after THG, you should definitely read probably at least the first TWO THG books before watching the film.
On its own, the movie is much less deep/involved than the books- they don't really give a great feel for the intrigue (you get that it's going on, and that's about it) or for the 'character' of the different districts. Like anything, the books spend much more time developing and describing the various players, while the movie merely (and literally) shows them by panning over them quickly.
In terms of comparing the two series from a literary standpoint, it's kinda apples and oranges. I wouldn't necessarily suggest Song to younger readers, while what makes THG great, moreso that it's actual subject-matter, is the way in which it deals with its subject without 'dumbing it down'- pandering to children/youth is the worst way to get them interested in reading.
Song is for people who read books like Ender's Game or THG when they were in gradeschool or middle school- and now are somewhere beyond that (age-wise).
-But despite how that last line might sound, I think THG is absolutely a worthwhile read at any age- for those who are maybe a bit beyond the level of that book, it will just read that much quicker. And it's not 'empty calories' for the brain like a lot of crap (with teen vampires in it- for example).
If you could only read one series or the other (for some odd reason), I'd definitely go with Song; but again that's not an endorsement I'd give for all readers/age groups.
nevaR!
Based on the feedback I received - I am completing THG series now. It's been incredibly good and I am glad I didn't go see the movie before I actually read the books. I haven't been disappointed and am looking forward to starting GoT series!
Plus the Game of Thrones series is almost identical to the books. So you'd be fine just watching them :P
I checked out the movie yesterday and I am so glad I read the books! The movie doesnt really catch the intensity of the books but still was decent.
The Hunger Games for one revolves around, of course, one character and the whole series all together is a very short read compared to Game of Thrones,
Well, very long books with different character storylines that all tie in together and A Song of Ice and Fire series is a very great series and mature. It has a great storyline and the read is long,
So it all comes down to if you want to read something light or something that will take your time both books are great but A Song of Ice And Fire(Game of Thrones Series) I enjoyed more then The Hunger Games Book Series
(: Hope I helped in some way

Game of Thrones all the way.
Thanks again for everyone's input. I finished Hunger Games but then got a little side tracked with another book but I hope to be starting A Song of Fire and Ice in a few days.
