The lights are on
Yes it has now been one year since I started blogging at Gameinformer. Honestly though I have never been that big of a writer before and even after I started blogging I'd maybe write one or two blogs a week (And only ever got a blog herded once.) But over the course of a year I've made some buddies, found twitter and some third thing. So I'd say it's been a pretty good year.
Not only am I going to thank some people I'm also going to give something I haven't before: My top ten games from this generation. Why you ask? Well, because, I always give my favorite games of last generation when I make a list and well I figured, now would be a pretty good time to do so.
-
First the thank you's
Redlitez76: Yep it's everybody's favorite grouchy old dude redlitez! Truth be told, he's actually a pretty swell guy. He will only really gets angry at you if you've done something horrible (Or step on his lawn) but trust me, you won't like him when he's angry (Hulk pun intended.)
Born4This: Another very swell dude, Dean aka Born4this (Who is the host of everybody's favorite podcast Robot in the Corner) is a very cool guy to talk to. He's even helped me out with a number of blogs in the past.
Saint: I'm sure a lot of people here have taken some measure of inspiration to blog here from him like I have. He is of course a very, very great blogger and in the past 2 years has contributed a lot to the community here.
EuphoricEnnui: The English teacher of these here parts (or at least the closest thing we have to an English teacher around here), he's a very fun guy to talk to and If you need help with understanding something or with writing he will help you out.
Hist: He's an awesome guy a great blogger and he's from Canada (huh honestly i thought i knew more about him)
Gamebeast23456: A very good friend and our Podcast, AGP's valiant host (Depending on what you mean by "Valiant".) He's fun guy to talk to so long as you don't mind being called a communist hipster every now and again.
TOGNick: Yep my fellow co-host (In other words, the only other guy I'd need to convince to start a coup against gamebeast) and pizza delivery expert (He's the one who can tell you it's not fun delivering pizzas to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) TOGNick! He's an awesome dude; he has his own Podcast The 4th Floor and writes for The Game effect.
xXxSkolxXx: And finally my "brother from another mother" Skol. Yep we are buddies bound together by the vile Hughes Net (The only good it ever did).
(Next page is the top ten's list)

10. Borderlands
When I first saw Borderlands I have to say my interest was peaked. I mean the visual were cartoony and interesting, from all of the videos of it I saw beforehand it looked like it would have some solid game play and it had a very big made up number of guns so of course it got my interest.
Now it did have some flaws (Guns were all basically the same and after a while they became worthless, vehicles were crap and the fact that the game doesn't have that much story among other things) but it was still fun and its co-op is still the best I've seen.
9. 'Splosion Man
Of course I have to add an indie game to my list (Sadly this will be the only one due to my crappy internet) and what better than one about 'splosions, meat and donuts! 'Splosion Man is a platformer with some old school difficulty and one simple mechanism: S'sploding!
'Splosion man can be frustrating and the main character can get annoying pretty fast but it can also be pretty fun as well. Plus what other game has a song about donuts? (Disclaimer: The donut song may or may not have been the reason the game got onto my list)
8. Prince of Persia (2008)
Coming out as the reboot to the Prince of Persia sands of time trilogy (Which if you think about was a reboot of the classic Prince of Persia game); it was by no means a perfect game. The biggest flaw of the game is the combat which is about 80% quick time events (You can't even kill one boss without them and you have to press the buttons in humanly fast... If I clipped my nails I couldn't defeat him at all!) But the game's characters, story, platforming and artsy graphics really won. Not to mention the amazing ending that has since left me wanting a sequel.
7. Dragon Age Origins
In way Dragon Age Origins was Bioware's ode to J.J.R. Tolkien's epic lord of the rings. Like most of bioware's games, Dragon Age Origins was an RPG but unlike the other games it went without a morality bar. With the morality bar gone it could be a more grayer, personal morality type game.
Another thing I liked about the game was the amount of choice you had. As the "Origins" in Dragon Age Origins implies you can start from 6 different beginnings (Depending on what race and class you are.) This coupled with grayish morality provide some very good story telling.
On the console the games combat is not the best and the sequel has officially gotten me off the series for good (With the exception of this game) but the game is still very much worth it.
6. Portal 2
The sequel to the first person puzzle game hit; Portal 2 had a lot ridding after the success of the original and it actually managed to deliver and more so. Were as Portal was a short but sweat 6 hour game, portal 2 is a hefty 9 to 12 hours of gameplay. Unlike the original Portal 2 also provides a much grander story and a lot better developed characters. One of the best things about the game though is it's genuinely the funniest game I've played since Psychonauts.
5. Deadly Premonition
Most games I like because they are good but then there are some games I like because they are bad, Deadly premonition is in the latter category. If you were only looking at Deadly premonition from a gameplay stand point you would see a very bad game, however, in a way Deadly Premonition is so bad it's good.
The characters are quirky and weird, the story is quirky and interesting (Some slightly disturbing moments here and there) the graphics would be good if this was the PS2 era and the gameplay is so bad it makes you wonder if it was done on purpose (it's kind of obvious that the walking up stairs was done on purpose but I'm not sure how much was and was not in the game) but the game is just so lovable (And makes me want to watch Twin Peaks... If only I could find them)
4. Red Dead Redemption
Honestly If John Wayne was still alive and young today; this would probably be a game he would most approve of. Red Dead Redemption is the spiritual successor to Red Dead Revolver but has almost absolutely common with Revolver. While (From what I have heard and seen of it) Revolver is pretty much just a bunch of stages, Redemption is a giant open world with an actually story and well developed characters, not to mention the game just oozed with Wild West goodness.
3. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
The Monster Hunter series has never really gotten a big following here as it has in Japan (By that I mean being bigger then Pokémon over there) but since playing the first Monster Hunter freedom on the PSP I've been a fan (Admittedly I never played freedom 2 but that doesn't really matter when it comes to the Monster Hunter games) so of course I was going to pick up Unite.
I do understand why some people might not like it. The first few hours are very slow and there is grinding. The monster can be very difficult at times but if you can stick with it, it can be a very addictive game (Between two playthroughs I have about over 250 hours logged.)
2. Mass Effect (Series)
Yes I couldn't actually decide which one I wanted to put here so I put them both here (So sue me I'm very indecisive.) So yes Mass Effect as I'm sure you all know is Bioware's Sci fi trilogy epic RPG, so yes blah, blah, blah it's awesome. I could go on but it's been said before.
1. Metro 2033
Admittedly I had only played metro 2033 just a few weeks ago but, it has already managed to get to the top of my list. Metro 2033 is an FPS based on the Russian book by the same name but it never got that much attention which, is rather sad being that it is an incredibly amazing game.
I could tell why I like it so much but, I have already written a review (Here or you can wait for me to post it here) and I'm lazy, so read it!
Well that's all folks!
No mention of Co-Podcaster DDDD:
haha, jk. Ill be putting one of these out soon too
Red Dead Redemption is my absolute favorite game. Congratulations on the anniversary, I think I've missed mine lol.
Nice picks, I'm glad to see Deadly Premonition up here it is defientley a unique game and I loved the platforming in the recent Prince of Persia. I really want to try Metro 2033 sounds interesting and seeing how I've been addicted to wasteland settings lately...anyway Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 1 & 2, Borderlands, Portal 2, and Dragon Age: Origins rank amongst some of my most favorite games ever. Happy Anniversary!
I like the mix of AAA titles and smaller games.
