The lights are on
(quick note: this isn't a slam on anybody, so if you've come to flame, you're in the wrong place :-P )
I'm sure you've noticed it on this site as well: that person on top who says "First comment!" as you look down the comments, and I'm willing to bet that you've gotten annoyed for one of these two reasons: a) you find it annoying and childishb) you weren't the first comment
Well, I've come to ponder the existence of this phrase, and why it has come to be. Research has shown that the majority of the news posts have someone saying "First comment!" Doing a wee bit of inside work, I found that doing so raised a small smile on my face, but that's about it. No "YES!!!" or "In your faces!" came to mind, just a simple little feeling of glee. Is that it, I wondered? Or is there more to it?
While I'm not willing to repeat this experiment multiple times for fear of being persecuted by the online community, there are still many questions I've got. Does this feeling multiply, or does it lessen? Does this become more of a compulsive habit after a while, or less? Most importantly, how did this all start?
Perhaps this is a genetic thing, sort of like OCD, where rivals compete to put up that trivial word before the others. Maybe it's a fad in the same vein of Twitter: utterly pointless, yet commonly used for fun? Toying with conspiracy theories, this could be an elaborate plot to take over the internet! How? I haven't worked that part out yet; give me a sleepless night to ponder that, and I'll connect it with swine flu and Nixon somehow.

I think this is a lot of thought on something that never really mattered to me... wow. Now I wondering why it even matters? Oh well... back to reading other things.
A) Um...Fifth? dang. too late.
B) I think that the "first game" is about as old as the internet itself. as long as there are lots of immature people in one place, something like this is more or less inevitable.
C) If you're looking for a conspiracy theory, Pedro, try throwing the Aliens and ancient Mayans in there, too.
I like when people do this. It lets me know who not to add to my friend list.

Meh, it's annoying but really not like it affects anything that important.
A simple cry for attention I assume. On most occasions the person who post with, "FIRST!!!", usually doesn't have anything really important to say afterwards and even if they do, it is overshadowed by their stupidity. I usually ignore the post if "First" is the beggining of their comment.
Plus, its an easy way to get points if they are in to that.
Oh and I forgot to mention how funny it is when you see the first post with that annoying little comment and then you see the second post and it also has the "first" comment. lol Couldn't get it out fast enough. It is almost sad to see.
...meh, I don't really care about "firsts" most of the time. I've probably done it at least 3 times throughout my life time, but I do also give them a serious, knowledgeable response after the fact I say "first". It's fun to kinda be random, but also feels pointless, and thus, I usually never do it. So I'm gray on this topic, I don't advocate "firsts", but I don't do anything to stop it from happening...
I agree with lawlwaitwhat. Although seeing it does kinda make me want to also be first on something.
I don't really care. However, one shouldn't post "First!" and nothing else. I don't know if there are people that constantly refresh, looking for a new post to first on.
I just ignore it. There were other places on the net where I openly opposed it, but I realized that it can't be fought. People just feel the need and obey it, even if they have absolutely nothing to say besides that.
Well, no one's pulled a "FIRST!" on my blogs yet so... although back in the days of the social thread it was an honor to be on the first page for some reason.
