Pokemon HeartGold: My First Impressions

Today, my Pokemon obsession reached the next level when I picked up a copy of Pokemon HeartGold.

The only reason I'm writing a blog about HeartGold instead of playing it is because DS battery died, which I usually try not to let happen. But in this case, I just kept playing until suddenly the screens went dark. So, partially out of boredom, I got to thinking about what made me ignore the telltale red light of death, and decided to write it down.

HeartGold is a remake of Pokemon Gold version, and that alone makes it worth playing for any nostalgic Pokemaniac like me. But the improvements are what makes it great.

There are several changes that any longtime player will notice right away. The most obvious one is probably the fact that the first Pokemon in your party follows you, and you can interact with them. After a particularly tough battle, you might turn to your Pokemon and hear it cry out, tired and needing to be healed. Or if you just conquered a string of tough wild Pokemon, it might pop up a little smile icon and roll around in the grass in joy. It's a nice touch that gives your Pokemon a little bit of personality. There's no benefit to the game for talking to your Pokemon, but you won't care because it's fun.

There are other changes, some purely cosmetic, like the obvious graphical overhaul of the Johto region Generation II Pokemaniacs remember so well. Since this is the DS, you have the touch screen, which the game makes much better use of than Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum right away. The menus have been assigned to the touch screen, making navigating them a breeze. Plus a button to tap which has exactly the same function as the A button, making it easier to do everything without dropping and picking up your stylus over and over again. And my favorite use so far; the run toggle. Tap it, and you can run everywhere without holding B. It might seem like just a minor change, but if you don't have a bike yet and you hate the pace of walking, you'll definitely appreciate it.

You can also drag and drop to reorganize your boxes, and I've heard that later in the game there will be even more functionality, including multiple Poketch apps. All I can say is, finally! Relegating touch to minigames, some menu navigation, and the Poketch in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum was a bad decision, since it's so obvious that it could be used in better ways.

I could go on and on about the different little changes I've found that make this game more enjoyable than ever, but I'll end with something many people expressed doubts about the use of: The Pokewalker.

It's small (I've tried my best to scale it to actual size above) but it's also just plain fun. I tried it out after only about an hour of playing, and transferred a Rattata to it. I chose a path to walk on, (the path determines what Pokemon you see) and then I went outside. After a little while, I checked to see how Rattata was doing. It said something like this: "Rattata is having fun! Rattata found 50 Watts!"

Watts are a little currency you can earn from using the Pokewalker. 1 Watt is earned every 20 steps, and your Pokemon can find them too. You can spend them on minigames in the Pokewalker, which let you earn items or catch Pokemon. You can store a maximum of 3 items and 3 Pokemon before you need to sync with your DS and dump them to your game.

I believe there is another purpose for Watts, but I haven't played long enough yet to know for sure. Whatever the case, it's a great, fun little gadget. It's easy to clip on your belt or pocket and forget about, while constantly earning experience for a Pokemon of your choice. The minigames are fun and surprisingly challenging; finding items is mostly a game of chance, but the battling takes speed and some strategy.

Overall, I'm loving HeartGold more than I've loved any Pokemon game for a long time. And now my DS should be charged enough to get back to it, so I leave you all to whatever you were doing before reading this blog typed out of boredom.

  • I was thinking about getting Soul Silver actually because I enjoyed the first few pokemon games a lot.  I have a question though, can you do multiple saves yet?

  • i know in some pokemon games (like sapphire and ruby) one game has a few more pokemon than the other. is that true in this?
  • @Anthony Sacco: My brother got SoulSilver, and he was absorbed in it pretty much all day, so I would recommend it. And no, only one saved file per game. It kind of sucks, but Nintendo knows that the people who complain just buy another copy. It's Pokemon. How could they not?

@magicmike: You are correct; when two games are released at once, there are a select few Pokemon only available in one or the other. In this case, HeartGold has 16 exclusive Pokemon, and SoulSilver has 14. You can see the list here: http://www.serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/exclusives.shtml
  • i'm probably going to pick this one up later (I'm still in the middle of Platinum)

  • thanks smashter

  • Is it depressing that out of all that, the Pokewalker seems like the most interesting idea to me? Not only do the benefits look good, but it also reinforces healthy habits...like moving.

  • Cool, I am really interested in Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver as Crystal was my very first game I ever brought.

  • i have played pokemon since i was little and i have very fond memories of gold and silver...i picked it up this morning and forgot some MAJOR aspects of the game! i forgot there were 16 badges instead of 8! how i could foget that you ask? its been years and years since i played gold and silver. this game is far superior to any ds pokemon before it and the best 40 bucks and change ive spent for my ds yet. ive already logged 6 and a half hours and gotten 4 badges, my core 3 pokemon are all level 30 and up...its 3am and i cant stop playing...u be the judge!

  • This was my first Pokemon game so Of coarse I preordered SoulSilver XD I love walking with my pokemon (on the walker and the game) so much XDDD I just loved what they did with the game (so worth it!)

  • Does the pokewalker make noise? Maybe I could bring it to the office....if I every get it. I hate havig to choose between L4D2, BFBC2 and this.
  • wow this blog has made me want to get it much earlier than i was going to

  • @Kevin Maskornick: I think the Pokewalker is probably my favorite part so far. I've been wearing it all day, and the occasional breaks to play a minigame are really quite fun.

@Brian toward: You got 4 badges in 6 and a half hours? Wow, I knew I played slow, but SHEESH! I've only got 1! Then again, I do tend to waaaaay over-train my Pokemon. When I got to the Elite Four in Pokemon Pearl, my team averaged level 80, and right now I'm working my entire team up to level 15 before I move on.

@TheReallyCoolGuy: The Pokewalker makes noise by default, but you can mute it. I like to have the sound on though, because it makes a beeping noise when you're playing the catching minigame that is helpful.

    @SILVERAMMO: Go to it man!

  • @Smashter

i had to take a pokebreak today because i played so long yesterday at one time that my neck actually hurts from looking down haha. i had to work a 12 hour shift today too so it really didnt leave much time to play.  when i play a game like pokemon i like to have a good couple of hours to really play, which stinks because the ds is made for short bursts of gaming...but pokemon is epic so it doesnt apply!

  • Now that I've read this, I'm going to harass my mum until she buys it for me. My brother & his friends, and also one of my friends already have it, and they keep taunting me with it. :K My mum is going to go batcrap crazy in the next few days.
