GaMe #3: DJH - The End of the Day

Olimar was long gone.  He had left the mysterious planet long ago, leaving the Pikmin behind.  After he left, the creatures got more and more vicious, and soon Pikmin became hunted down.  Then something strange began happening.  Pikmin stopped blooming.  Those with flowers began to slowly recede until they once again had a leaf on their head.  Pikmin began to group together in colonies, where there were so many Pikmin that they began to be named by a combination of three letters.

It was to one such colony that a yellow Pikmin known as DJH was born.  He looked just like other yellow Pikmin, the same as DJG and DJI.  But there was always something about him that unsettled the other Pikmin.  Their tribe leader, a purple Pikmin known as ATF, had always urged the other Pikmin, "Stick together.  Two Pikmin are better than one.  And fifty Pikmin are better than two."  DJH, however, seemed to have a sense of originality, ever since he drank from the Sacred Spring when he was only a month old.  The day after, monsters had discovered the massive amounts of Pikmin there, and they swarmed it, eating every Pikmin at the Spring, save DJH.

Oftentimes he could be seen, in the top of the tree under which his colony was built, staring across the rugged hills to the Sacred Spring.  He couldn't remember his brief taste, but he did have some sense of longing.  He didn't know why, but he needed to go there.  He needed a drink.

One morning, after the roar of the creatures above the roots had died down, DJH quietly snuck out of the tree.  He was headed for the Sacred Spring, even though there were monsters.

He snuck across the rugged terrain that separated the tree from the Spring, and he soon found himself at the top of the hill that overlooked it.  He counted seven monsters that were asleep by its waters, and it aroused a sense of anger in DJH that something so pure was defiled by them.  Suddenly, he heard rumbling, and he dove underneath a small overhang formed by the massive trunk of a long-dead tree.

He heard something above him, sniffing, as if it could smell Pikmin underneath a tree.  He saw the snout of an enormous creature stick out from on top of the tree, moving back and forth, then the whole creature emerged, to DJH's relief, not turning around.  But it was still sniffing, as if it could still smell another Pikmin nearby.  DJH looked around, finally spotting what the monster could smell.  At the far end of the rough patch, there was a cliff overlooking more forest, and at the edge of that cliff he could see a single white stalk with a leaf at the end poking out of the ground.  A lone Pikmin was about to be a snack.

DJH looked from the Pikmin to the Sacred Spring.  Only an extraordinary Pikmin could hope to save whoever was about to become dinner.  Extraordinary, he thought, Pikmin can't be extraordinary.  It takes at least 20 of us just to get by.  then he remembered ATF's words.

"Fifty Pikmin may be better than two," he said to himself, "But two is certainly better than one!"  He broke his cover, dashing away from the Spring that he had been so close to drinking from, and toward the lone Pikmin.  The creature had stopped a few feet away, sniffing the leaf thoroughly.  Ignoring his fear, DJH charge at the underground Pikmin, grabbing the stalk, and jumping off the cliff, pulling it from the ground as he did so.

The next thing he knew, he was being shaken awake by a small white Pikmin that he assumed had almost been a snack., "Thank you for saving me!  I'm EEI, and I'm sorry that I caused you so much trouble."  DJH sat up, realizing it was nighttime.  He could hear the roar of the creatures as they wandered the surface, looking for Pikmin.

DJH and EEI were had plummeted from the top of the cliff, which loomed over them, jagged and  menacing.  They had landed on a small outlet of rock, which was barely large enough for the two Pikmin to stand on.  Below them they could see the creatures rampaging through the jungle far below, eating any Pikmin they could find.

Then DJH realized that something was dripping on him.  He looked up and realized that there was a small hole in the cliff above him, dripping water down from the Sacred Spring.  Not believing his luck, he scooped some of it up into his leaf, and he tasted the glorious water of the Sacred Spring.  He laughed and showed it to EEI, and they each took turns drinking from the small line of water snaking its way down the rocky face.

Before they could finish their drink, they heard a cry.  A massive flying monster was coming at them, and it looked hungry.  They both frantically climbed up the cliff, helping each other out and making sure they managed to make it up.   The monster arrived just as they reached the top, and with a cry it plunged its giant beak at EEI.  EEI frantically tried to run, but the beak drilled into him.

"EEI, No!" DJH cried as he charged the monster, bashing its eye with his stem.  The monster recoiled, and EEI fell from its mouth as it plummeted backwards off the cliff and down into the jungle.

"I don't know what came over me," EEI stammered, "The moment I drank from the Spring, I began to think for myself.  I was no longer just another Pikmin.  I was me."  He slumped over and moved no more.

The whole colony woke as DJH came beneath the roots of the tree, back to his home.  DJH was about to apologize for leaving the colony, but ATF silenced him, looking above his head, "DJH, look at your leaf."  DJH walked to the small pond under the tree that provided his colony with water, and he gasped.

Atop his head was a bud.  As he watched, it slowly bloomed into a marvelous flower.

  • Wow. That was awesome! And sweet choice with Pikmin. I love that game.

    -edit-
And that was an interesting touch with my, and the others, names.
  • This is great work Cubone... I'm sure it only takes one of your pokemon type to take on a horde of monsters!
  • I like how you incorporated DJH's name into the story.
