The Nerdiest Thing I've Ever Done

I've always embraced my inner nerd.  Life's more fun when you don't care if people think it's stupid that you don't care about sports or can name off every 1st Generation Pokémon there is.  Accepting that fate for so long has caused me to  subconsciously do nerdy things.  Besides the simple things (like doodling Pikachu in class or speaking really fast about gaming terms that no one else knows), there are some major things I've done in my lifetime, and I'm going to tell you about one of them.

It was about a year ago.  My friend and I were constantly talking about getting together sometime and Pokémon battling.  The only problem was that he was ALWAYS busy.  Being the true nerd I am, I had way too much free time around then, but if it didn't work out for him, it didn't matter.

However, one day I had an idea.  We each picked six Pokémon for a team, chose their movesets, and started thinking about strategies.  The next day I came to school with their stats written down, the damage calculation formula memorized, about 10 blank sheets of paper, and a calculator at the ready.  We commenced our Pokémon battle.

It lasted for a week at least.  We spent every minute of our free time (and a couple minutes that weren't free time) picking moves and painstakingly plugging and chugging the numbers into the calculator.  Eventually the HP of our Pokémon had been erased and re-written so much that we had to get a special page just for the Health.  My Torterra's HP had to get a new stack at least 3 times because I kept using Synthesis with Leftovers to keep him at full HP.  We must have gone through at least 2 pencils, and we spent every minute we weren't playing strategizing and planning out our every move.  Needless to say, it was epic.

Eventually I triumphed.  My extensive knowledge of how to build and use a reliable team had payed through in the end.  I triumphantly stood up in my seat and let out a victory cry.  When asked what happened, my response was probably something like this:

"Oh my gosh I just Swords Danced my Marowak then used Double Edge to take out Gyarados in ONE HIT!  And because of Rock Head I took no recoil so the next turn he sent out his Staraptor and BOOM!  Stone Edge!"

You would not believe how many weird looks I got.  It didn't help that we were in the middle of study hall.  And for all you who were curious, the Pokémon damage calculation formula is this:

Damage = (((2 * Level / 5 + 2) * Attacker's Attack * Attack Power / Defender's Defense) / 50 + 2) * Same Type Attack Boost (STAB) * Weakness or Resistence * Random Number between 85 and 100 / 100

And that, my friends, is my greatest achievement as a nerd.  What's the nerdiest thing you've ever done?

  • That right there is dedication. How did you get the random numbers?
  • That's the essence of a gaming nerd. I can still name all the original pokemon too. It was the only generation worth remembering(along with 2nd gen).
  • Nice blog Cubone! I didn't understand a word of it but get the spirit!!

  • Good Blog! Probably the nerdiest thing I ever done was spending aprox 6 hrs straight Masuda Methoding to get a Shiny Charmander, thankfully I finally got it.

I can only imagine how much more awesome this blog would have been if I had understood the last paragraph or so! BTW it is totally possible to be a nerd and a Sports buff.
  • Nerdiest thing I've done? Had an online rivalry with someone on a gaming forum...
  • That actually sounds like a lot of fun lol. One of the nerdiest things I've done is, learn more video themes on guitar then normal songs lol.

Nice one, and despite what some would consider strange, it's an accomplishment nonetheless. I remember when I used to play Yugioh and I ended up beating this guy who had to be like forty that would get all dramatic when he summoned his god card Slifer. The nerdiest thing I've done is dress up like a GTA character for Halloween.

Cubone, I seriously don't think you can become any more awesome. Hilarious blog. Mine would have to be me breaking up with a girlfriend because she insulted the Legend of Zelda...it's an incredibly long story, and it was part of an on going problem we were having. She refused to accept me as who I am...a giant walking stick made of nerd.
  • My major nerd accomplishment? In 6th grade, me and my friends were so far ahead in class (like, 6 or 7 chapters) that our teacher let us play Dungeons & Dragons in the corner while everybody else did their math problems.

    That was awesome. :)
  • I love this! How did you come up with the formula?
  • I believe that you have achieved the Einstein Trophy!
  • Me and a buddy got pissed at our dates at junior prom and played Magic the Gathering in the parking lot instead...

  • Nerdiest thing I've done... In 9th Grade I went to school on Halloween dressed as the Joker. I was the only one in a costume.

  • Ha that is funny, I think I would do the same thing were I in your shoes. I haven't played Pokemon in years but I can probably name the first 151 Pokemon if I wrote them down lol. The nerdiest thing I have ever done is write a story involving all of my favorite video game characters, actually I feel like doing it again all of the sudden...
  • Ah, nerdiness! I have done so many nerdy things over my lifetime, I don't know what is the nerdiest. However, I do know the most pathetic nerdy thing I've done.
So, it was late last summer. One of my best friends and I had pulled off an amazing audio play of War of the Worlds the previous school year, so we decided to make another audio play, this time with Star Wars The New Jedi Order: Vector Prime. I was in charge of writing the script and we shared the task of recruiting other voices.
Well, at this time (and still today) there was a girl at my church that I had a crush on, so I asked her (over text) if she would be interested in doing an audio play. She said no before I even got to the part about it being Star Wars. Phooey.
Epilogue: After that I lost all motivation for the play and never finished the script. The End.
