The News - 07.20.11 - The Parent's Guide to Video Games

Hello again, Parents and Gamers!

Today was relatively quiet in the world of video games. However, the one thing of note is the announcement and exposure of a new free-to-play title based on the highly popular "Family Guy" television show that is often featured on both Fox and Cartoon Network. Let's take a look!

--------------------------------------

20th Century Fox announced today a brand-new, free-to-play, internet-browser based title that will be focused around their mega-hit television series, Family Guy.

Named "Family Guy Online", this new game is looking to combine the comic hilarity of the Family Guy cartoon series with tried-and-true video-game ideas from titles like World of Warcraft and Everquest. The game is supposed to be fully 3D with an open world for players to explore. The game will also be an "MMO" (Massively Multiplayer Online), meaning that players will be able to play and interact with hundreds, if not thousands of other players from around the world at the same time.

The game will feature more than 150 different characters from the hit television series, however that's not all. In an effort to make the game more personal, players will be able to develop and create their own characters to insert into the Family Guy universe and interact with the characters from the show. On top of that, this "character creation" will be akin to other MMO's in the fact that it will feature a class-based system.

Normally, in an MMO, players choose different classes that allow them to play very pertinent roles in and outside of combat. Players known as "Tanks" often will soak up damage from enemies to keep their friends from getting hurt. Coincidentally, "Healers" will keep their friends alive by helping them heal up. "Damage" (sometimes known as "DPS"), wouldn't you know it, punches out a great of damage to enemies.

Family Guy Online will feature a very similar system. With class-types based around popular characters from the Griffin family, players can choose to "be like" Peter, Lois, Stewie, etc. to fill one of these class-types.
Currently, we don't have a release date for it, but the website is already up and going and you are already able to build your very on character by visiting their official website. If you would like to visit their site, simply click here. Don't worry if the site is down for maintenance, just give it a little.

Further information for this game will be released in the next week during San Diego's "Comic Con" convention.

Also, some of you may have already noticed that we have added the "Upcoming Games and Release Dates" tab. After rather positive feedback from many of you, we decided that it would be best to have available so that you can easily check when a game is coming out along with what it will be rated. This tab will constantly be updated, so feel free to check back later if you don't see something.

  • Just seeing how much Fox now loves the show they previously kicked to the curb without a thought... cracks me up just about as much as the show itself.
