The iphone is seriously overlooked on this site, so I’ve compiled a little list of the best games on the itouch (in my opinion mind you). My friends and I play on our itouchs all the time. I love it. I don’t just play games when I’m away from home because some are that good.

With the holidays coming up, many of you will likely receive itunes gift cards. Since many people can get music other ways besides itunes, I think that spending money or gift cards on games is a great idea.

So here is my list of good (paid) games for the iphone/itouch. I haven’t played all the games on the app store, but I’ve played a lot of paid games and these are only the best of what I’ve played.

Action/Adventure

Hero of Sparta – A real gamer’s game, Hero of Sparta has a lot of action on a small device. The combat is fun and the visuals are fantastic.

Epic

Rolando 1 & 2 – Rolando is a game made just for the itouch. It uses the accelerometer to great effect. In the world of Rolando Land, you move and tilt around the little circular rolandos from point A to point B. As the game progresses the challenge gets harder.

Puzzle (its sort of a loose definition of puzzle games)

GeoDefense & GeoDefense Swarm – These two games are some of the best tower defense games on the app store. They started with 30 levels each, but more are added through updates. The medium and hard levels are fun and very challenging, and the graphics are pretty cool. They look just like geometry wars. If you are wondering the differences between the two games, GeoDefense has you placing towers around a path, and Swarm has you making your own path with towers.

Zen Bound – Another game made just for the itouch, Zen Bound is kind of hard to explain, and make it sound interesting. You wrap string around an object. Like the title suggests it’s a very zen game. You can go at your own pace. It’s very relaxing. You just have to cover as much of the given object as you can with as little string possible.

Blocked – Its traffic jam for the itouch. The graphics are simple, but they work. There are 100 levels and after a little while they get very challenging.

Racing

Real Racing – Real Racing is the best racer on the itouch. It has it all: controls, graphics, gameplay, and an awesome online community. The career mode is good, with a nice track and car selection. After you unlock cars and tracks in the career, you can do time trials to submit online, or enter online racing leagues. Local wifi races with friends are also available and it’s loads of fun. Oh, and did I mention it has a sick cockpit view!

RPG

Zenonia – This game is one of the best handheld RPGs around, I’m not kidding. It can compete with DS games. I’ve heard it’s been compared to the Legend of Zelda. The graphics are really nice and colorful (2D). It lasts a long time. It has a classic RPG feel with lots of grinding. However, the combat system makes grinding fun. Its real time, not turn based. I’ve played one character for around 30 hours and I must be about half way through the game. The developers boast 40 hours of gameplay. There is much more.

Dungeon Hunter – Dungeon Hunter is a Diablo clone for the itouch. It does a really good of that. It’s a hack n’slash action RPG. There is an insane amount of loot. Need I say more?

The Sims 3 – It’s The Sims in your pocket! It’s not a full port of the game, but it does what it can. There is a good amount of stuff to do. Like the regular game, you can interact with other Sims, get a job, and complete goals. If you complete all 73 goals you unlock a car and pawn shop, and can choose to be a criminal.

#1 Game on the App Store

Peggle – I know it’s been on pretty much every game device out there, but if you haven’t experienced the amazing Peggle yet, get it for your idevice. Its regular price is only 5 dollars (much cheaper than on any other game system). The game seems simple and is addictive. There are a bunch of pegs in a level, and you have to shoot balls at them to get rid of the pegs. With the power ups, challenges, and hi scores to get, the game gets a little more complex.

As a matter of fact, I love hating upon it. But there is one thing I don’t hate, the replay theatre. I wish all multiplayer games were nice enough to include a replay theatre and screenshotablity (new word). Oh, and map editablility (That’s my other new word). I can’t count the number of “HOLY S**T!!! THAT’S CRAZAAAAY!” moments I’ve had while playing Battlefield or Call of Dudes that I wish I could bottle up and save forever. Just imagine your favorite multiplayer game (not halo) and imagine saving game replays, and changing the map to make some wicked fun games. It would help to create an amazing online community. Look how long Halo 3 has lasted. And it’s still going strong.

I was just listening to my local classic rock radio station when the DJ started talking about Brutal Legend. He talked about the metal and how you go around hunting things (with a guitar I think he said). Anyway he said Christmas is rolling around and he was thinking about getting it (for him or someone else). Thought that was cool.

If you live in the Greater Boston area you may know what station I'm talking about, 100.7 WZLX.
