Console wars: Necessary or unnecessary?

So I've been reading comments lately about the PSN issue and I've noticed a lot of fanboys on this site and other sites. So it inspired me to make this blog. Console wars, it all started when all 3 consoles released. People have been trashing all consoles from all cylinders.

Example: "Xbox is a piece of trash, it keeps getting RRoD" Well that was just a technical issue. People should understand that consoles can't be made perfect the 1st try. It takes some time to make the system great. Another quote I hear often " Xbox owners have to pay for online while PS3 owners don't." Well that is a separate decision that microsoft decided to make. And it lead to a good community, not that much problems with XBL and so on. Although I agree the 60$ a year is a little much, XBL is still a great service.

Now on to the PS3 portion. Example: "PS3 has old technology" I haven't heard this on this site but on another site there is this person repeatedly bashing the PS3 with so-called "old technology". Well if it was old why does it have  blu-ray capbilities? "PSN gets hacked often" Um you get what you pay for, in this case nothing. I'm going to go a little off-topic here. Sony should charge for online, as people could see it discourages hackers from invading PSN. Why do I think this? Xbox live, that's why. But Sony shouldn't charge 60$ but at least 30$ a year. Ok next that it has lag, freezes easily, and slowly connects to online matches. Well that all depends on your internet connection. So....yeah.

Ok last but not least: The Wii. "it only does motion controls and that is why it sucks" That's just an example quote by the way. anyways the wii wasn't aimed for hardcore gamers but for families. People should understand that when they buy a system.  "it has crappy games". Well that's not true there have been many great games for Wii. Super mario galaxy, Donkey Kong Country returns are good examples. Those are really the only hardware insults I've heard for wii.

This is the one I always hear fanboys say: " Well we get exclusive content on [insert game here] and that's why you should buy a [insert console here[" Well all consoles get exclusive content, Xbox gets early DLC on most multi platform games, PS3 got free PC version for portal 2, mortal kombat exclusive character (kratos), and L.A Noire exclusive case. Well they get this because the companies got allowed to do it. Remember Xbox was going to get an exclusive character as well but allegedly microsoft did not let them.In L.A Noire's case, Rockstar wanted to give PS3 something after they gave GTAIV DLC early to Xbox 360.

So this should get your mind straight and with this information, do you think Console wars are even necessary? If you have any infamous fanboy quotes, feel free to express your thoughts in the comments. This blog could be updated using your comments. Thanks for reading. :)

  • The console wars maybe the single greatest thing to happen, to the big three anyway. It's like having an army of free advertisers that also give you money, brilliant really.
  • Console wars definitely are necessary.  Even way back when the SNES and Genesis were at war, companies forced into console wars are driven by competition.  And through competition, companies make better and better consoles.

With the Wii 2, Nintendo is making strides to be be better than the 360 and PS3.  Competition through console wars are absolutely necessary.

  • A blog that wants people to start a console/fanboy war? hmm... interesting.
  • I have not heard a lot of those complaints... The RRoD has come and gone. The PSN outage will hopefully be done soon. And Wii... well, the Wii changed things- love it or hate it, it made the industry better in my opinion. And my computer still outshines all of them. If only I used it for more games... So I'm pro-console. And pro-PC. I should make bumper stickers... I really hate the idea of Sony charging for the PSN. I understand the logic, but I totally disagree. Should gameinformer.com start charging to use their web site? I mean, we are taking up server space. They need a full time staff to keep this beast running, moderators to keep us in line... Sony sells us phones, cameras, tvs, home theaters, consoles, games and so on. They also sell advertising and downloadable content. They have contracts with Netflix, Facebook, Qriocity and who knows what else. They have plenty of money; charging for their network would not necessarily make anything more stable, faster or in any way better. Like I said in another blog: Microsoft is only as good, at best, as it's free competitors make it. Internet Explorer would still suck if it weren't for Firefox (which is way better), we would still be using Windows XP if it weren't for Ubuntu, and we would still be forced to pay ridiculous prices for mildly functional word processing software if it weren't for Open Office. I think it's a big selling point that you can shoot your friends online for free* on the PSN. Normally, at least.
  • PlayStation versus Nintendo versus XBOX - The New Movie, coming out in 4D!!! "Whoever wins... We lose." (We as PC users) :P:P:P Just an idea, since everybody is talking about console wars. AvP is just that good!
  • Technology companies have been competing since time immemorial.  VCR vs Betamax.  BluRay vs. HDDVD.  I don't know exactly how many, but there used to be many American television manufacturers now there are only two because the Japanese did it better.

So in essence, the console wars must happen as it benefits the consumer.  I do know that the Wii did not compare to either the 360 or PS3 graphics wise or storage capabilities so I never considered it a nextgen system when they all came out.  I would say the Wii HD is probably going to have some advances that the 360 and PS3 can't compete with.  Though in another two years we'll see the Xbox next and PS4, and the Wii HD will just be like the current Wii is today.

  • PC is the best for gaming anyway, we have steam, mods, better graphics, larger hdd space, and most games, plus keyboard and mouse controls.
  • This is a good blog, especially since I know you were struggling earlier. Keep it up.
  • I am going to be honest here... I actually kind of like the console wars.  I mean yes people do take it too far some times.  But really sports fans pick teams that they follow.  And the teams are way closer to doing the same thing as each other than the consoles are... Just my opinion any way.  While it does get annoying when fanboys join in and ruin a perfectly good conversation sometimes it's just fun to team up.

Really right now the Xbox guys are kicking PS3 while it's down.  But really the XBOXrs and the PS3rs kind of need each other.  They each keep the gaming world competitive.  I mean really do we really want Microsoft to not have any competition?  Think Live is expensive now?  How about when there isn't any other option for online play?  And as for the Sony fanboys.  Sony's consoles are always insanely priced when they first come out.  I love sony and I'm always an early adopter but I am totally willing to admit I overpay for things sometimes just to have the tech early.  Do you think that Sony would take a loss for each console sold if there wasn't another console they had to compete with.  If the PS3 was the only console I think the starting price would have been way higher than what it was.

I don't think any fanboy/fangirl will admit it but the console 'wars' are necessary and they keep gaming as something that is open to a lot of people.

  • It was already said but the wars are necessary.  Competition drives innovation. Of course could it be done in a more civil way by the fanboys, yes.  On the point of PSN, it's free and perhaps paying for it would make the network more secure, but I think it had more to do with Sony resting on the network security and not keeping it up to date.  Also anything can get hacked.  It's not a matter of if it's a matter of when.

  • i agree with all of this. i'm not big for console wars. why? i think all the systems are awesome. sure, there are flaws. i have a 360 but i still would like a PS3, eventually. i just dont see the point behind the wars.
