What's Happening

Not Laboring On Labor Day (2012)…

Like I always do when a holiday rolls around, I took a look at last year's blog to see what I posted and how things have changed. Sometimes I'll blow the dust off of the old one and repost it as a REPLAY; and sometimes I'll just start fresh and post something new. I think this time around I'm kind of doing a little bit of both. I'm recycling the title and much of what I talked about previously, but I'm rewriting most of the content so it's original. I always feel a little guilty reposting and updating old blogs. If you're interested in reading that blog you can check it out here.

Anyway...

Today is Labor Day and I pretty much managed to do nothing all day. Mission accomplished. Isn't that kind of the point of Labor Day?

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 5 in 2011) that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers.

Playing

This time last year I was playing Uncharted and this year...hmm, let's see...I'm about half way through Bioshock. It's the first time I've ever played it. I know, I know...I'm a little late learning what everybody else has already been saying, but it is a remarkable game. Besides that, I am continuing the never ending excavation projects I have in Minecraft and logged another 4 hours of consecutive game play on Saturday. Oh yeah, then of course there is Team Fortress 2 and the recently released Mann vs. Machine update that just released. How does Valve continue to come up with such addictive and heart pounding game play, I'll never know...but they certainly do. I'm trying to knock out some older games before some of these big Fall releases that are scheduled to release.

Blogging

Despite many of the former blogging regulars being absent, I think the blogging community is the best it's ever been. With a steady stream of blogs of notable substance being provided by a large able-bodied group of bloggers, the community continues to grow and prosper. I know I have a few blogs in the works and look forward to what my fellow bloggers are no doubt going to bring. We're getting some front page coverage with Jeff M's latest blog, Why You Should Blog At Game Informer and I also expect we'll see some new featured bloggers soon. Stay tuned, more to follow.

Watching

I'm going to tell on myself a bit, but I am in the middle of watching "The Lucky One" - a movie based off of a Nicholas Sparks novel, or to summarize...it's a chick flick. Yeah I know...go on, say it! It's true, I'm a big softie for these kind of movies. In my defense, the lead male character is a former Marine. Don't knock it unless you've seen it.

Reading

Well, besides Star Wars Vs. Star Trek (yes, that's really a book)...I've been reading Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth by Christopher Golden. It's a great book and you can expect a blog about it once I finish it. I have another blog about a video game inspired novel already in the works that you should see soon. It's probably the best video game novel I've ever read.

In Other News

I recently had a birthday and wasn't really feeling that much older until today. Maybe it took a few days before it hit me. First, fellow community member Theora Craft and I exchanged a few comments about our first systems and she was kind enough to point out when her family had an Apollo 660 computer from the 80s, she was crawling around.

And then...I see this almost inappropriate but ever so comical banner at Game Informer...just what exactly are you trying to say Game Informer?? Please tell me this is residual effects from the spambots that have been plaguing the website. Anybody else getting this ad...Hist or Kyle maybe (trying to think of fellow old gamers)?

As the weekend winds down, some of you who are students, know students or have children that are students who will be headed back to school or college tomorrow. It's not uncommon to see a decline in activity around this time. If this is you, I would like to wish you well, and offer a word of encouragement:

"Setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means." -Albert Einstein

Okay, well back to work and back to blogging tomorrow. I hope you all had a safe and lazy Labor Day weekend and managed to play even more games than normal. Here's to good games, fast respawns and extra lives.

Cheers.

Comments
  • i sadly worked my ace of today, apparently people really enjoy pizza on labor day.

  • Happy late birthday saint! I managed to do nothing today as well, and it was very satisfying.

  • BAHAHAHA oh boy that ad made me laugh. I still have yet to try out the mann vs machine thing. Also, woohoo for Bioshock, where in the game are you right now?

  • Those pop-up adds can be downright creepy. Star Wars vs. Star Trek? Never heard of it. (although I should have:) Which side does it favor?

  • Cheers! HaHa great blog Saint i really enjoyed it!

  • I love your nostalgic blogs, they're always the best. Good to see you're playing BioShock, I rented it a couple days after it released, and played it all in one marathon overnight session. Good stuff.

And I saw Jeff M's blogging story. Very cool that he mentioned you; you're basically the community manager around here anyway. But of course Jeff has always been one of the most proactive staff members in terms of community interaction. I know you visited there recently, did you slip Marchiafava the old Benjamin handshake? :)

I wonder what we'll be playing next year...
  • Hope to help uphold that high opinion of the current batch of bloggers. Got a few ideas in the pipes.

Don't feel too bad about The Lucky One. I'm actually looking forward to Silver Linings Playbook, but then I might be able to blame the urge to see a Rom Com on the testosterone poisoning that I'm sure the large amounts of Gears of War I've been playing lately has inflicted.

I'll be interested to see your video game novel blog given I've got a number of books myself. I was always surprised just how many of the video games novels I have turned out to be quite good, but being picky about the game having a good story first before picking up a book based on it helps.

The most ire the Apollo ever drew from me? My father would hide not just easter eggs around the house, but both mine and my sister's baskets as well. One year he put mine inside the tower. There was a surprising amount of space in that thing around the components. That was a WAY harder hiding spot than my sister's basket resided in, and she's the older one! XD

  • Labor Day... finished up Darksiders II, started a new playthrough of the original NES Legend of Zelda, played some Counter-Strike, watched the half season finale of Breaking Bad, drank a few beers, ate a giant pizza, and I got paid for it.  Pretty awesome day.

Can I guess that the game-inspired book you're alluding to is the first Witcher novel?  If not, you should read the first Withcer novel.

  • I didn't really do anything lol. Played a bit of Mercenaries 2 (still going for the trophies in that one). It's awesome to see you're getting into Bioshock. It's definitely one of my favorite games.

  • As a fellow Uncharted fan, I think I owe it to myself to read the novels. I look forward to your blog about them. That is one hilarious ad by the way haha! Oh, and happy belated birthday!

  • I already can't remember what I did on Labor Day, just like any other weekend I guess.

  • You browse the internet without Adblock Plus? Pull it together, man, and get ADP. You won't see another advertisement again.

  • I played a ridiculous amount of Darksiders 2 this weekend. It was awesome. :)

  • Mod
@xking595x - and we appreciate it...or at least the people ordering pizza did, for sure.

@Shaddow1 - Thank you! Yeah, doing nothing can be very satisfying.

@firedude3663 - That ad was funny. Mann Vs. Machine is pretty cool. And I'm a little ways past Arcadia.

@Darth-Carbonite - So far, it favors Star Wars, which is cool...or I wouldn't be reading it.

    @Dawson Wyckoff - Thanks.

@thegodofwine7 - Cool. That means a lot. Yeah, I have part 1 and 2 although I hear 2 isn't near as good. Part 1 is good though. I'm enjoying it. Yeah, Jeff M is a great guy and very supportive representing our community. He mentioned others too, and don't think your name hasn't been mentioned behind the scenes. ;) I dunno what we'll be playing, but I can't wait to find out.

@Theora Craft - I'm sure you will. Hah Hah...your Lucky One comment made me LOL. I've posted a couple VG book reviews before, but the ones coming up next are some of my favorite books I've read. Funny story about the Apollo. I've never seen one in person, but back then the bigger and roomier the better.

@AbsoluteDeicide - Sweet. I haven't played the new CS, any good? Wow, all that and you got paid for it...I'm jealous. Nope, not Witcher. I'll keep an eye out for it though.

@Masterassassin - Yeah, I'm so slow because I search everything and everywhere. No trashcan goes un-searched.

@ace13 - Well the one I'm reading is good so far, but doesn't really compare to the game. Oh, and thanks for the birthday wishes.

@Harry - Play games? Too easy.

@Doctor Apozem - I like to live on the wild side...that's how I roll.

    @born4this - This, I believe... :)
  • Meh, I was roped into watching The Lucky One- and must say I was surprised when it wasn't terrible. Decent, in fact. Also, yep- been seeing those ads as well...
