GIA: Special Achievement Requirements (Part 2 of 2)…

I'm finally in the last stages of going live with the unofficial Game Informer Online Achievements initiative. One or two more blogs, a few tweaks to the master database file and then the contests to decide the first three (Gold, Silver, and Bronze) community members to have their trophy case created. All of that will be promulgated in the coming days and weeks. But for tonight, enjoy part 2 of 2 of the Special Achievement Requirements blog that announces the final achievements and what you're going to have to do to earn them.

There have been four blogs posted on Game Informer Online achievements. They can be found here:

Game Informer Online Achievements - An Introduction

This blog introduces the original concept of the Game Informer Online Achievement initiative to determine if the community would even be interested in this proposal.

Game Informer Online Achievements: An Explanation

The Introduction blog received sufficient attention; I actually came back and provide further explanation on the direction the program was going.

GIA: General Achievement Requirements

The first of several blogs that start discussing the actual specifics and requirements of the awards; this blog explores the 15 general achievements and the requirements to earn them.

GIA: Special Achievement Requirements (Part 1 of 2)

The second of several blogs that start discussing the actual specifics and requirements of the awards; this blog explores 18 of 35 special achievements and the requirements to earn them.

As previously mentioned in the General Achievement Requirements blog, there are 50 total achievements - 15 of them are general and 35 of them are special. The special achievements will all be dedicated to various members within the community. Since 35 awards is a hefty number, it took two blogs to cover the special achievements. This blog will focus on the final 17 of the special achievements and a brief description of the requirements.

GIA34 Friends In High Places

This achievement is awarded to members who have engaged in any online or multiplayer mode with official staff members from the Game Informer magazine, regardless of system, network, game or mode. This award will be validated by an Award Judge upon reviewing the event specifics or supporting evidence that validates the claim.

GIA35 I Fought The Law

This achievement is awarded to members who have engaged in any online or multiplayer mode with official moderators from the Game Informer community, regardless of system, network, game or mode. This award will be validated by an Award Judge upon reviewing the event specifics or supporting evidence that validates the claim.

GIA36 That Was Then, This Is Now

This achievement is awarded to members who have been registered members of the Game Informer community for a period of time sufficient enough they have been designated as "Old Timers" by the staff and were around prior to the last major site update. This award will be validated by an Award Judge after confirming the member's membership date and whether they belong to the exclusive "Old  Timers" group.

GIA37 Read The Fine Print

This achievement is awarded to members who have been mentioned anywhere in the Game Informer magazine, including articles, columns, notes, or the fine print. This award will be validated by an Award Judge after viewing the applicable issue of Game Informer and confirming it with the respective user.

GIA38 You've Got Mail

This achievement is awarded to members who have been mentioned anywhere in the official Game Informer newsletter that is distributed via email. GIO Users are normally mentioned in the user blogs portion of the newsletter, but any mention of a user by their profile name will satisfy the requirements of this achievement. This award will be validated by an Award Judge after viewing the applicable Game Informer newsletter.

GIA39 You Have The Right To Remain Silent

This achievement is awarded to members who have had one of their posts, comments or other submissions locked or deleted by a staff member or official moderator due to violating the Game Informer terms and user agreement. Typically this can be for posting inappropriate content or follow on discussions that escalate out of control, but each scenario will be evaluated by an Award Judge on a case by case basis. Members who intentionally try and farm this achievement will have their efforts invalidated and risk embarrassment from the GIO community.

GIA40 Green Eggs And Spam

This achievement is awarded to those members who do their part to combat spam to include the ever annoying "First" comment that some users still insist on posting. In order to unlock this achievement, a member has to be the first person to comment to a "First" comment and their comment has to read, "Say! I do like Green Eggs and Spam." The post must be validated by an Award Judge and a determination will be made whether the initial comment and response are legitimate.

GIA41 Heard It On The Radio

This achievement is awarded to those members who have been mentioned by user name on the official Game Informer podcast, regardless of the context or tone of the reference. This award can be validated by an Award Judge after listening to the applicable podcast and verifying the information for accuracy.

GIA42 Take Me To Your Leader

This achievement is awarded to those members who are currently or have been employed by GameStop, the parent company of Game Informer.  It is awarded to recognize their support of the video game industry and Game Informer. Although there is no way to guarantee past or present employment, members submitting for this achievement will still coordinate approval with an Award Judge.

GIA43 I Am Legend

This achievement is a "Lifetime Achievement" Award that is issued to one member per calendar year based on their overall positive contribution and popularity within the Game Informer Online community. Any member of the community can nominate a specific individual; however nominations should include substantial supporting evidence to corroborate the nomination. The nominated members will be voted upon by the Award Judges and a winner will be announced. Members are only eligible to receive one Lifetime Achievement Award. Please note that award judges are able to receive this award, however, if they are nominated they are unable to participate in the vote.

GIA44 Good Samaritan

This achievement is awarded to members who have participated in or contributed to any charity event that benefits the Game Informer community, sponsored by members of the Game Informer community, OR is affiliated with an officially sanctioned video game charitable organization. Participation and event approval will be evaluated by an Award Judge on a case by case basis. This award cannot be issued in conjunction with the "Did You Get the Memo" achievement.

GIA45 Top Gun

This achievement, also called the "Maverick Award", is awarded to members from the Game Informer Online (GIO) community for demonstrating a shrewd, bold, unapologetic and impenitent personality, as noted by their upfront and candid contributions in the forums and comments posted on blogs, reviews and guides. Any community member can nominate someone for this achievement, but the panel of Award Judges will review the personality and circumstances of the nominee to decide whether they meet the criteria of the achievement.

GIA46 Official Member of the Peanut Gallery

This achievement, also called the "Ambassador Award", is awarded to members from the Game Informer Online (GIO) community for being an outstanding audience member as demonstrated by their positive contributions in the forums and comments posted on blogs, reviews and guides. A user must be nominated by one of the Award Judges, and the achievement will be validated and approved by a majority vote from all of the Award Judges.

GIA47 Assume Nothing

This achievement, which may also be referred to as the "Golden Donkey" award, is awarded to members for those rare instances where they say or do something that is embarrassing, asinine, foolish, lewd,  or would under most circumstances be considered inappropriate behavior. You know what they say about when you "assume". This achievement is issued sparingly as to prevent users from intentionally acting inappropriate in an effort to receive the award. Any community member can nominate someone for this achievement, but the panel of Award Judges will review the circumstances and decide whether it meets the criteria of the Golden Donkey - Assume Nothing achievement.

GIA48 Handle With Care

This achievement is awarded to distinguished members from the Game Informer Online (GIO) community because of position or reputation. Very few will earn this award as its use is limited to members who work in the video game industry (development and production) or support the video game industry (journalism or community management). A person can be recommended for the award by any member from the community; however, an Award Judge must nominate the person to the panel of Award Judges and receive a majority vote to authorize the award.

GIA49 The Royal Imperial Guard

This achievement is awarded to members (active or retired) who have been designated as an official Game Informer Online (GIO) Award Judge. There will always be a minimum of five and maximum of ten judges assigned, whose tasks include assisting with the awarding and validating of achievements to the community. Should a member retire, another member will be selected from the community and will be awarded this achievement.

GIA50 Overachiever

This achievement is awarded to members based on the number of achievements unlocked in any category with different levels of the award being issued depending on the award totals. For example, upon earning 10 achievements, the user will unlock the Bronze Overachiever achievement.

And there you have it. All 50 achievements - the 15 general and the 35 special - have all been introduced and explained. The next blog will present the 35 special achievements and who they are being dedicated to, as well as the justification summary for each award. As a reminder, 10 of the special awards haven't been dedicated to anyone yet, and subsequent announcements will detail the process of how they will be awarded. Please note that one member can only have a maximum of two special achievements dedicated on their behalf.

Final comment - In every one of these blogs, there has been a comment or two questioning the program or a few of the specific achievements. I appreciate the feedback and criticism, truly I do, but as a reminder, this is an unofficial initiative and if you're not interested, it's fairly easy to ignore. I've put a lot of effort into the awards, the requirements, the balance and the program as a whole. I'm not saying it's perfect or won't need a tweak here and there down the road, but let's at least get it live before we determine whether it's junk or not. I doubt most people who display their trophy case in their profile will even get noticed by the majority of the community. (I've never heard of the "I've Been Herded" button causing problems). I certainly don't think it's going to lead to widespread chaos and pandemonium. If it did/does - then obviously I would suspend the program. One of the other complaints seems to suggest this is aimed at some elite group of community members, which I don't think is accurate. It is, however, targeted towards those who are active and productive members of the community and who are interested in participating in something of this nature.

Enjoy!
