GIA: Special Achievement Requirements (Part 1 of 2)…

After some gentle prodding and some outright asking, I suppose it's time to provide the next update on the Game Informer Online achievements. To be fair, I intentionally put the initiative on hold the past few weeks, largely due to some of the turmoil that bubbled up between various community members. I didn't want to throw a hand grenade on the already burning fire...and I didn't want to inject any more tension into the situation with something that could potentially divide the community further. Well, I decided to proceed with the plan. I really do think it can help foster a sense of community and unity, despite those who think it will be abused and cause widespread pandemonium.

The other good news is I've started work on the GIO Achievements group, so expect to see more on that soon. I think a group will be necessary as it will provide an easier workspace to facilitate the program from. I'll post all the blogs on the subject of Game Informer Achievements there, as well as a cheat sheet that will help determine which achievements you qualify for. It will also provide an area where I can post each user's achievement image for download.

There have been three blogs posted on Game Informer Online achievements. They can be found here:

Game Informer Online Achievements - An Introduction

This blog introduces the original concept of the Game Informer Online Achievement initiative to determine if the community would even be interested in this proposal.

Game Informer Online Achievements: An Explanation

The Introduction blog received sufficient attention; I actually came back and provide further explanation on the direction the program was going.

GIA: General Achievement Requirements

The first of several blogs that start discussing the actual specifics and requirements of the awards; this blog explores the 15 general achievements and the requirements to earn them.

As a reminder, this is an unofficial initiative that is being spearheaded by a few members of the community with lots of support and interest from many of you within the community. Your continued support is paramount for this to be a successful endeavor and I appreciate everybody who helps out or is interested in participating. Also, even though this isn't an officially sponsored program, I have received some positive feedback indicating that the staff, or at least certain members of the staff, are going to support it.

As previously mentioned in the General Achievement Requirements blog, there are 50 total achievements - 15 of them are general and 35 of them are special. The special achievements will all be dedicated to various members within the community. Since 35 awards is a hefty number, it will take me a few blogs to cover them all. This blog will focus on 18 of the special achievements and a brief description of the requirements.

GIA16    Ban Hammer Survivor

This achievement is awarded to those members who have incurred a temporary account ban from the Game Informer website by one of the moderators or a member of the staff due to conduct unbecoming a member of the community, but has rallied back against all odds to a place of respect and admiration.

GIA17    Comrades in Arms

This achievement is awarded to those members who have participated in an organized Frag Fest event coordinated by eyros2k or one of the other moderators of the program. Multiple levels of this award exist depending on the number of events attended. Participation must be confirmed by eyros2k or designated representative.

GIA18    Grand Slam

This achievement is awarded to those members who have supported the online community by submitting a minimum of 3 blogs, 3 guides and 3 reviews at the Game Informer website. Submissions must be validated by one of the award judges to ensure quantity and quality standards are satisfied.

GIA19    In The Spotlight

This achievement is awarded to those members who have been recognized at the Game Informer website in the Member Herding feature. Member Herding is an unofficial blog series that spotlights members of the community with a question and answer session in an interview type environment. This award can be validated by viewing the applicable Member Herding blog for the individual being awarded this achievement.

GIA20    15 Minutes Of Fame

This achievement is awarded to those members who have been recognized at the Game Informer website in the Blog Herding feature. Blog herding is an official blog series that spotlights exceptional blogs submitted by the GI community. This award can be validated by viewing the applicable Blog Herding post that contains the blog for the individual being awarded this achievement.

GIA21    Paper or Plastic

This achievement is awarded to those members who are subscribers of the Game Informer magazine. Game Informer is available in two formats - a printed paper magazine or a digital version that is viewable online. The type of award issued is dependent upon the format a member is subscribed to. In the event a member somehow receives both versions of Game Informer, the member can select which award to display in their personal award frame. This award will be issued on the honor system since verifying its authenticity is impossible for the awards judges to verify.

GIA22    Missing In Action

This achievement is awarded to those members who were previously active in the Game Informer community, but due to real world events, lack of interest, or circumstances that otherwise resulted in their disappearance from the website, they have been considered to be in a "Missing In Action (MIA)" status. Typically, the duration of the absence must exceed 90 days to be considered missing. Additionally, "missing" is defined as no official website activity to include but not limited to posting blogs, reviews or guides; commenting in any capacity; providing periodic status updates, or engaging in any other activity that suggest the person is present at the website. Any GI community member can nominate a person for this award, but approval will be confirmed by one or more of the award judges.

GIA23    Music To My Ears

This achievement is awarded to those members who have made an appearance of sufficient quality and duration on one of the Game Informer user community podcasts or vlogs as a host or special guest. This award can be validated by the host of the applicable media file or by having one of the award judges verify the information for accuracy.

GIA24    Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder

This achievement is awarded to members who have had their artwork submissions featured in the Game Informer magazine's Art Gallery feature. This award will be validated by an Award Judge after viewing the applicable issue of Game Informer and confirming it with the respective artist.

GIA25    Welcome To The Jungle

This achievement is awarded to members who have attended a major video game or pop culture event to include but not limited to E3, Comic-Con, GDC, PAX East, PAX West, or any other major industry event. This award will be validated by an Award Judge after viewing photos that show event participation or a copy of the user's entry badge or ticket stub to the event.

GIA26    I'll Be Back

This achievement is awarded to members who have submitted a "farewell" blog to the Game Informer community regardless of reason or the circumstances surrounding the departure. Users who submit the farewell blog but never actually leave are ineligible; users who submit the farewell blog but return after 30 days are eligible. This award will be validated by an Award Judge based on the sincerity and applicability of the farewell blog.

GIA27    Big Kahuna

This achievement is awarded to members who have received a comment (good or bad) from Andy McNamara, the  Editor In Chief of Game Informer magazine. This award will be validated by an Award Judge by reviewing the comment for the blog, review, or forum post where the comment exists. The comment must be directed at the person nominated for the award and not the general community.

GIA28    Seal Of Approval

This achievement is similar to the Big Kahuna achievement but is personally awarded by Andy McNamara, the  Editor In Chief (EIC) of Game Informer magazine. The EIC can issue this "Seal of Approval" to any blog, review, guide, forum post, comment or for sustained superior performance to any user member as he desires. This award will be validated by an Award Judge upon reviewing the correspondence from the EIC that authorizes the issuance of his Seal of Approval.

GIA29    Journey To The Center Of The Universe

This achievement is awarded to members who have had the distinct pleasure of visiting the Game Informer headquarters located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This award will be validated by an Award Judge upon reviewing evidence corroborating the visit (photos, staff comments, arrest report or other physical evidence).

GIA30    Did You Get The Memo

This achievement is awarded to members who have attended any official Game Informer Community Events (like the GI Community Bike Ride) or participated in authorized unofficial Game Informer Events (like the charity event). This award will be validated by an Award Judge upon reviewing the event specifics.

GIA31    Smile For The Camera

This achievement is awarded to members who have posted a personal photo, either in their profile, blog, forum post or elsewhere on the GIO website, that reveals their true identity to the entire Game Informer community. Posting pictures of other GIO users does not fulfill the requirement. Additionally, obvious fakes or photos with objectionable content will result in immediate disqualification for this achievement.

GIA32    Identity Crisis

This achievement is awarded to members who have completed and/or customized their personal user profile at the Game Informer Online website. At a minimum, the default fields will be completed with valid responses that coincide with the respective fields. This award will be validated by an Award Judge after viewing the applicable profile and a determination is made whether the information provided is sufficient or not.

GIA33    With Friends Like These

This achievement is awarded to members who have engaged in any online or multiplayer mode with another user from the Game Informer Community, regardless of system, network, game or mode. This award will be validated by an Award Judge upon reviewing the event specifics or supporting evidence that validates the evidence. Two or more individuals from the GIO Community (Level 5 or greater) can verify each other.

That's the first 18 of the special achievements. The next blog will cover the final 17 special achievements and after that, will be the special achievement dedication that reveals the community members who will have one of the special awards dedicated on their behalf.

Now, I know some of these seem ridiculously easy to obtain, but let me just say...these aren't video game achievements. They are simple little rewards designed to grow and strengthen the community. Yes, filling out your profile might not be all that challenging and simply being a subscriber might not seem award worthy, but in the big scheme of things, they help balance out some of the harder ones that many of us might not ever be able to get, like attending a major industry event or visit Game Informer headquarters. As I've said before, If you're not interested or think this is a bad idea, then just ignore this.
