GIA: General Achievement Requirements…

If you're reading this then hopefully you're familiar with the initiative afoot within the user community to implement  our own set of achievements (and for the record, when I say achievements I really mean, awards, trophies, badges, trinkets, accolades...or achievements). If you are completely lost and have no idea what I'm talking about, then I would encourage you to take a look at either (or both) of these blogs that explain it a bit more than this blog will. This blog is going to specifically address the General Achievement requirements. The other two blogs can be found here and here.

So, in the last blog about achievements, I mentioned that I'd like to have 50 but would be satisfied if 25 people expressed interest in this project. The blog had 67 comments - 1 was kind of negative, 2 were kind of neutral, and the remaining 64 had positive comments or were interested in participating. That being said, what I did was took the names and added them to the roster. The first three people (bronze, silver and gold) to get their profile evaluated and the award image generated will be determined by a yet to be announced method, but the rest I'll try and do in the order of the comments. At least that's the plan for now.

And to respond to a few questions that were asked in the last blog...

Question: "I just checked the original blog, and noticed that you said there would be 55 achievements. What changed?"

Answer: A couple things changed. Perhaps the biggest is that 50 is just a more rounded number and worked better in the layout. The five that got dropped were for accomplishments that didn't seem to fit the spirit and intent of the rest. For example, two were "the oldest" and "the youngest". I don't know how I would confirm this, and really...it doesn't offer anything to the community.

Question: "Are these the only ones or will you add other achievements as time goes on?"

Answer: I'm not considering adding any others. I think what we have captures a wide gambit of activity you could expect to participate in at Game Informer. Also, based on the construction of the Excel spreadsheet and required programming to make it all work, adding more would mean I would have to rework all of that. So, probably just these. You never know though.

Question: "If say, one achievement is for getting your blog herded. Would you have to do that again or would things you've done before the achievements came in count?"

Answer: Most of the achievements include previous accomplishments. Using your example of getting a blog herded, which is one of the achievements, then any blog herded past, present or future would qualify for the award. There are some, however, that are "new" and no one will have earned yet. This was intentional so people could pursue them once it's announced.

Question: "Some of those achievement pictures look strangely TF2ish."

Answer: All of the images were provided free of charge by born4this, who to my knowledge is not a Team Fortress 2 player...so any resemblance is purely coincidental. I am huge fan of Team Fortress 2, but I had nothing to do with the images, to include suggesting possible appearances. Luck of the draw.

Question / Statement: "Allow users to have an achievement snapshot version that doesn't have them all greyed out. It's kind of a hefty jpg for a forum sig."

Response: I'm still tinkering with the profile and signature image. I've looked at plenty of profiles and signatures, and a bunch of GIO users have much larger pics. I'm more than willing to modify it as needed, but I have to get to that point first.

And now for the 15 General Achievements (and remember these are the ones not dedicated to anybody in particular). Game Informer Achievements (GIA) 01-15. If the achievement has different levels, they will be listed after the description. And it should go without saying this is still a work in progress, so you might see some minor changes before the final product.

GIA11    Moderator Comment Totals (NOTE: There will be a Bronze/Silver/Gold level)

This achievement is awarded to members based on the number of official moderator comments they have received on their blogs, reviews or guides posted at Game Informer. Level 5 (Bronze), Level 10 (Silver), Level 15 (Gold)

I don't think anyone will be overly surprised with these, as they're pretty easy to guess by looking at the titles in the last blog I posted on this. Since none of this is formally "live" yet, feel free to provide comments, concerns or feedback. It would be far easier to incorporate changes now rather than after the fact.

  • Sweet! I've been looking forward to this

    I've been looking over my own profile, etc., in comparison. I will be posting a blog reviewing any merits or concerns I have regarding this system soon. Stay posted and keep up the good work!

  • This sounds awesome! My only complaint is that some of the achievements are hard to get if your account is not a high level. Other than that though, it's great!

  • Great job! I cannot wait

  • How many gamerscore do i get if I "first" a blog? Please tell me it's a bajillion!

  • Finally, progress!! I know I bug you enough about this that you probably get irritated with me.

    The only concerns I see are that some of these are almost impossible to get. Staff comments at 5 seems kind of high to me. I've been here for a while and have only gotten 1.

    I would like to know if you have any planned judges yet or not. I'm sure Demon Ragnorak is considered, as well as others, will you be included?

    Otherwise that sounds awesome!

  • Seems like a good idea.  I don't know how many people actually use all the options available or if this will drive the need to participate.  I don't feel the need to blog oftenso I can't see myself getting many of these awards, but that's ok.  I enjoy this site no matter what.  Also, I agree that you *Saint deserve a lot of praise for the amount of content you provide/promote/blog about.  Why you have not been hired by GI yet is beyond me.

    @trap_the_clap27 - http://tinyurl.com/27vg6l8

    @firedude3663 - Just like video game achievements, there might be some who try and circumvent the system, but let's be honest...since this is a manual process with a panel of judges to provide oversight, hopefully we can minimize this behavior.

    @SolidSoap - And if it was too easy then the big contributors would say the opposite. What I did was look at some of our most active members and then I set some numbers that would still be challenging for them. Striking a balance was tough, but I think over time these numbers are fair.

    @born4this - Yup! I think you did a phenomenal job on them!

    @Cody Gilley - Certainly not me. That would be a conflict of interest. If anything, I'm the administrator and maintainer of the database. There is a panel of what I've labelled Award Judges. I think they've all be notified...but if not they will be. They are kind of the forum moderators of achievements. It will be announced as we get closer. In charge? Me? Now that's a scary thought. I think some people are getting too caught up on trying to get them all. Its probably not going to happen. The goal was kinda, have an image in your profile or signature that shows off a couple to a handful of achievements that might cause those who aren't aware of the program to ask, and get involved. Also, like I mentioned, many of these achievements are designed to promote participation in the community - not just for someone to get the achievement. Its kind of a win win. Or so I hope.

    @thatfoxguy - In all fairness...plenty of other websites (gaming and non-gaming) offer this, and it's automated and part of the website. My dream is that Andy and staff falls in love with this and offers it in future website upgrades. Thanks though!

    @SamuraiZero - Getting closer. The real treat (for me anyway) is when I start rolling out the 35 special achievements. Since they are dedicated to various members of the community, there is a layer of personal connection with them that I think will make some folks feel pretty special.

    @Ownzoir - Concerns are good. I encourage them. Trust me, I've tried to look at this from every angle and I'm sure there are plenty I've missed. So other people voicing concerns causes me to consider other issues. I'm always a little disappointed when people consider the negative more than the positive. Can and will people try and farm these? Maybe...but in the end they only really hurt themselves. Agree the staff will need to support more for some of these and I'm working that angle and believe I can help with that. Staff comments aren't impossible. Take a look at Craigaleg's latest video review. All things are possible. Again, I've given this a lot of thought and effort and think I can pull it off, with the help of the community and staff which seems like I have. This is one community where the staff is involved far more than any other site I've ever seen. So to think they're just going to randomly show up and comment just to comment...I don't think that would happen. Many of the GI staff carry on lengthy conversations via Twitter with folks from GIO. They are very engaged with the GIO community. Yes, I have a list of people set up to be the Award Judges. I picked people who are active in the community and have solid reputations as being fair and supportive. The "posting x number of blogs a month" was inspired by BlackHeartedWolf who did a 30 blogs in 30 days, which he successfully accomplished, and not only that...inspired a few others to do. It's a one time award. Earn it and keep it. There are different levels so those that can't do 30 can still earn something. I think that's fair. It will encourage those to participate at the level they can support.

    @thegodofwine7 - HAH HAH! Yeah, well that's why I announced it and it took 6 months to finally get to this point. You can ask born4this, I took a lot of time to think things through and didn't want to go live with a haphazard plan or program. Ambitious indeed. Go big or go home.

    @GoldvsSilver - Understandable. But the opportunity is certainly there. A few weeks ago, born4this posted a podcast and within a few days it had over 4,000 views. This is kind of out of the ordinary, but it happens. If you look at the link in the first comment, that blog has nearly 60,000 views...from a user blog. It can and will happen...even for the little guys. You have to be a little guy before you become a big guy.

    @Orochi Assassin LEVON - Thanks.

    @Shootist2600 - It's going to take a lot of time and effort. But the good news is, there are only about 65 people at present. To simplify the process, there will be a form that the user will fill out indicating which achievements they think they have, which will speed up the validation process. Those who want it will certainly have to help provide the data.

    @the mind of me - Okay...welcome. I'll add you to the list.

    @Masterassassin - Thanks. Just wait, the 35 special achievements are even better. At least I think so.

    @Destructur25 - Sweet.

    @Jack - Hah Hah...I like the eagerness to help. The 35 will take more time to reveal because they are more involved but you'll keep seeing updates in the coming days/weeks.

    @Harvester of Sorrow - Yup. But I have some outstanding volunteers that have agreed to help.

    @mojomonkey12 - hah hah...one of the achievements I dropped, was loosely based off of this. But I figured you'd be the only one who would go for it... :D

    @ShadowDragyn - Impossible, for sure! :D

    @frog2011 - Hah Hah...the staff has been more than gracious...Jeff M. has taken good care of me.

    @chsmn775 - stay tuned then! More to follow.

    @Orochi Assassin LEVON - I was a bit concerned when I saw this comment (although not the first blog that was born from this project) but I've read it and commented...so we're good! :D

    @l4dybu6 - But will give you something to strive for if you're interested. Some are super easy though and won't even really require any effort. It's a trade off.

    @TheBen - Cool. Thanks for the support.

    @Tactical Rash - OMG. OMG. OMG. He lives! And I had to come up a clever achievement regarding "first" posts...without encouraging people from making "first" posts...I think (hope) I achieved that.

    @blaze6106 - Me, irritated? Never. Staff comments high at 5? Ha! Craigaleg just got 4 in a row in one blog. :D I'll help with that, hopefully. Initially I thought five judges which have been picked, but am considering upping that to 10. No. Heck no...I'm not going to be one. I'm staying away from this as far as I can. LOL

    @Sean - My hope is that people aren't concerned with quantity as much as they are just being credited with the work they're doing...but in case they don't...the panel of judges will hopefully help out. Thanks for the kind words.
  • For the most blog views, it seems like 13 people have the advantage of being on the front page. I'm not trying to say that they shouldn't be apart of this, but when I see the most Popular blogs, it seems to be the same people who's blogs get put on the front. Anyways, great achievements! Good job, Dean!

    Saint,

    Worried? Oh come come now, never that. I'm not gonna grill you for taking time out of your day to do something that's completely optional. I'm far from that elite. As you know, I'm full steam ahead on this.

  • If I have a double post from a GIO staffer does that count as 2? lol

    Oh my.... it's hard reading this and not thinking 'what have I accomplished' I dunno lol. I have to ease myself back into writing apparently but seeing this is interesting. Makes me wonder if I could get 10k views for one of my blogs...

    Then again I refuse to write about the stuff that usually attracts that much attention, so who knows.

    Anyways nice work with these. Glad to see that you didn't forget about them.

    That being said, some seem a bit unreasonable. I'm not going to toot my own horn or anything, but I consider myself to be a fairly well seen blogger (at least at the times that I was writing). I have over 100 blogs under my belt, and yet I wouldn't even qualify for the first achievement on 'total blog views' as a suggestion, I'd bump some of the 'lifer' achievements down and lessen the gap.
  • does this stuff count for views and commments we have already earned?
  • Interesting concept. Can't wait for more details.

  • I love this idea, I mean I wont ever get a single one of these achievements, but I will give a pat on the back to anyone who does.
