The lights are on

While perusing a website dedicated to providing the latest and
greatest in video game downloads, I had a twinge of excitement when I noticed
the GoldenEye: Source Beta 3 announcement and download.
The highly anticipated GoldenEye: Source BETA 3 has
officially gone Gold! After extensive development, and hard work by our
testers, we've finally got a stable build, ready for release. The BETA 3 has
been a long development process, and probably even a longer wait for our
community. The process all started with the switch to the new Source Orange Box
Engine, and completely started our code from scratch, in light of the new
Engine. We are very excited to have finally gotten to this point, and we know
that you, the fans, will be even happier once you get your hands on it. The mod
is based on the original Nintendo64 game GoldenEye made by RARE Software.
I heard about this PC mod that uses the Half Life game
engine and based on the original GoldenEye for Nintendo 64 a few months ago,
but honestly, I kind of lost track of it over time. Apparently, it’s nearly
done. Of course I downloaded the file in eager anticipation.
I remember the first time I ever saw GoldenEye 007 was at
Wal-Mart (1997, crikey). No, not Gamestop, Wal-Mart. Back then, I don’t even
think there was Gamestop. The closest thing we had to Gamestop was Electronics
Botique or Babbages, but they were at the mall which was pretty far away…so we
got our new games at Wal-Mart.
So, the first time I saw GoldenEye was at Wal-Mart. They had
a Nintendo 64 unit setup and running it…and this kid was playing the Facility
level. He was up in the air conditioning duct and apparently didn’t know what
to do so he just kept wandering back and forth. I watched for a few moments and
then came to the conclusion it was the dumbest game ever.
Well, about a week later I was back at Wal-Mart (hey, who
doesn’t love Wal-Mart) and saw a different level. I forget the name of the map,
but the person playing had the sniper rifle and dispatched an enemy soldier in
a guard tower by shooting through the glass. (No, it wasn’t the same person I
saw playing the game before.) I was
blown away. It was then I knew I had to have the game. It took a few weeks, because
the game was sold out, but finally, we were able to purchase it.
…GoldenEye will always be one of my all time favorite games
(but not “the favorite” mind you).
It certainly wasn’t a perfect game…it had flaws…(like
shooting a soldier's hat off and him not even noticing or some of the clipping
issues) but it also introduced so many innovative concepts that it really set
the bar high and set the standard for games that tried to emulate its
Features like split screen, dual wielding, a solid story, wicked
cool multiplayer, the one hit kill Golden Gun, a sniper rifle that zooms…GoldenEye
It really was a great game.
I don’t know how many times I played through the single player story…and
I know the kids and I played countless multiplayer matches. Rockets Only.
Pistols Only. It was a ton of fun.
Back to the GoldenEye PC mod…
The mod is nicely done. It installed smoothly and has some
slick splash and interface screens. The weapons, maps and players are modeled
very much in line with the classic version. The developers even included Steam
achievements (80, I think). It's neat to see the collaborative effort and amount of work the developers put forth to turn out such a polished product. Definitely worth a look...
