The lights are on
Oh yeah, Doctor Who. To me, when brought up in regular conversation, it's like hearing your favorite song on the radio. It is the perfect watercooler show, especially with Season 6 (those who have seen it will agree with me). I think that the reboot is the best science fiction program (or show in general) since Star Trek: The Next Generation. Masterful writing and excecution makes this a brilliant show that makes me bite my nails waiting for April to come around. Here is why, and sort of my greatest hits of Doctor Who.
The Doctor
This guy. His character premise is brilliant, and gives the show a lot more time to air. He's the science teacher whom everyone in your class loves. He's a madman in a box, off to see the galaxy, and help who he can and those he can't without making sacrifices. He's intense and lighthearted. He could enslave the universe with the power of his sheer will, but he doesn't. He is a man trapped by his morals. We may never know what happened during the Last Time War, in specifics. He destroys his own people to save creation from the Daleks. Perhaps that is why the ninth regeneration is so angry.
The Doctor is a fantastic character, whether you like Matt Smith or can't stand him. Here's my deal with Eleven and Ten. Ten may be better than Eleven, in a lot of respects, but Eleven is a much better character than people give him credit for. Here is how I see the canon. Now that season 1-4 is basically Doctor Who's Greatest Hits, the series can now throw The Doctor into crazy new situations. While some people might not like the story of Season Five and Six, I put The Wedding of River Song episode over Doomsday, in terms of season finales.
Speaking of which, here are my favorite season finales in order: Season Four, Season Three and Six, Season Five, Season Two, Season One.
Now that that is out of the way, Matt Smith as The Doctor's eccentric and goofy persona, combined with the wise old man makes him the crazy, wise old man in the box.
(SPOILERS NOW AHEAD. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK. I AM NOT KIDDING)
In terms of story, my favorite episode of all time, and nothing has come close, is The End of Time Part One and Two. Part two is probably one of the most epic things I have seen. The Doctor freaking skydives out of a ship that just shoots all of the world's nuclear missiles out of the sky, goes through a skylight, and lands on the tile floor of the mansion. In the impending scene, you get a good look into what happened before Season One, and an epic twist done by The Master. After all of that, he absorbs all of the nuclear energy in the gate to save Wilfred, damning him to regenerate. He goes back and basically ties all of his main companions' stories together, and he goes back to the TARDIS. The Ood sing an epic song with an orchestra in the backround, and The Doctor regenerates, and the control room goes up in a firey explosion. It ends with Matt Smith's Doctor yelling "GERONIMO!" as the firey TARDIS falls to the Earth. Epic.
My second favorite story might be the entirety of Season Six. It has a zany plot with crazy plot twists and head-bursting moments (Mray's head literally exploded after the season finale, as I'm told).
That said, there are some things I don't understand. For example, where does Madame Kovarian fall in terms of timeline? How does she recruit the Silence, and if so, why aren't they at Demon's Run? They aren't plot ruining, they're just things that would have been nice that they added in.
The episode A Good Man Goes to War is one of my favorite Matt Smith performance episodes. He has a stoic presence around him, and everybody sees it, even though he is just a madman in a box. It's at the end where he realizes how he's changed over the hundreds of years, giving him a sense of sudden realization, and finally learns who River Song is.
That said, I don't like how they talk about him like he's a raging bull that comes after you if you fall into the wrong place at the wrong time.
Season Four is my favorite season. It's obvious why.
I will end on that note. I will put up part two some other time this week.
Cheers.
I love DW, and completely agree that Eleven is a great character (he was my 1st Doctor, I went back and watched 9 and 10 once i was addicted). I do, however, think that season 6 was too convoluted. Until season 6, I never had trouble comprehending what was going on in an episode, but there were several episodes (mostly in the second half) that I had to rewatch just to understand what happened. In addition, some of that plots were just too crazy to pass my suspension of disbelief. There was one episode (I think it was this year's Xmas special) where the Doctor skydived in space while putting the suit on and I just couldn't stop thinking that he would be dead if he was left in the vacuum of space for more than a few seconds.
I'm kind of going off on a rant here, but I do love DW, I just had a problem with the more recent episodes.
