Face-Off Thoughts (with DJH)

Me:

This year has had quite a few firsts for me, and no I'm not talking about those comments. One of those firsts was the Syfy tv show competition Face-Off. You might have heard of it before. The contest is for people to make prosthetic faces based on each week's challenges. The show is nearing the end of its 3rd season, with next Tuesday being the Finale. Here with me today is none other than our favorite sasquatch DJH.

DJH:

Hello! Face-Off is a neat competition pitting Special Effects Make Up artists against each other. Seeing the different creations from each competitor is just outstanding. (Makes me jealous that they can do makeup, whereas I can't even build a house correct in Minecraft) And seeing the failures is fun too. But man, has this season been an incredible season.

Me:

Yes, it has definitely been a great season so far. Each creation each week have been unique and interesting. To give you a sense of how varied the contestants have to be, one week they're doing a face based off character classes from Dishonored to bringing to life kids creations of monsters. Who and what have been your favorite contestants and spotlight weeks?

DJH:

And speaking of Dishonored, that was one of my favorite Spotlight challenges. I have not played the game yet (Yes, yes, I'm horrible, I know) I do feel that most of the contestants creations felt like a true part of the game. Some were definitely.... questionable. But their looks fit. The other Spotlight Challenge I loved was the Alice In Zombieland one. Take a spin on the classic characters as if the zombie plague has infected them. The looks were a bit of a disappointment, really. But some of them stood out, along with the theme of the challenge. Also, the star Wars challenge.

As for contestants, Roy was a favorite. The way he took his creations with the fabrication was intense, huge, and risky. But he managed to pull off most of them. Especially the very first one he did in season 3.

I've been rooting for Laura for awhile. While she hasn't gotten as much recognition as some of the others, I found some of her make-ups more interesting than what the judges thought. And after that last one she did for the "Grimm" inspired challenge, I am rooting for her to do great next week.

And my final favorite is Nicole. Yes, she got kicked out in episode four, but she got the chance to redeem herself and get back in the competition. And since her return, I have not been disappointed with what I've seen from her. And since her return, she has won two weeks in a row. And with good reason, especially for her cyborg make-up.

Me:

It's fine about Dishonored. I've yet to play it too. My favorite weeks were the ones I mentioned above. The contestants I was rooting for was Rod and Nicole. I was so saddened when she left, so you can sense my giddiness when she came back. I've been a fan of Laura too. Her drive to make something better because of other's designs made for some very interesting pieces of hers.

Moving on, I'd like to know what strengths and weaknesses each of the finalists (Laura, Nicole, and Derek) have?

DJH:

As for strengths and weaknesses. Nicole. Like I mentioned, I have not been disappointed with anything she has done since her return. All her concepts have been solid, and she has pulled them all off with a nice edge to them. When she came back, she came bigger and stronger than before. Just as long as she keeps her quality going, and doesn't go back to what sent her home the first time 'round, she is fine.

Laura. She has not been in the Bottom Looks to date. She has either been just safe, or in the Top Looks. And with good reason. Her biggest strengths are her concepts. When she has what she wants to do in her mind, she can do it. But that's also her weakness, she can't fully pull off what she plans. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed all her pieces, but she can't make something that really "stands out". She just needs to be sure she can go a little bit further with her design.

As for Derek. He's alright. I've enjoyed some of his past pieces. And he has won two challenges, but has also been in the Bottom Looks four times. When he gets a challenge that he knows he can do, he will do it, and he will do it good. But his weakness is some of his concepts. They just seem a little weak compared to others. And sometimes he can't pull off what he originally planned.

Me:

I'd have to agree with you on all fronts. Derek, while incredibly talented, tends to fall behind if his concept is a bit weird. And like you said with Laura, her indecision tends to be what gets her. That and sick models. And as for Nicole it's definitely been the drive that's pushing her to continue. It'd definitely suck if I lost twice in the same competition.

Now one of the last things I'd like to ask before we wrap this up is who do you think will win Face-Off and why? I'm going to pick Nicole, as not only have I been rooting for her since watching the show, but also because I've never been disappointed by her works.

DJH:

I have to go with Nicole also. With the departure of Roy, she has the best shot at winning it. She has the drive to take it all the way, and because of her epic comeback, I believe, and want, her to win. While Laura has a good shot at it, her inability to fully push her limits is making me lean towards Nicole.

Me:

Yeah, it's definitely going to be a toss up on Tuesday on who will win. It'll be so exciting! I can't wait to see it.

Well thank you DJ for wanting to do this. Are there any last words you'd like to say?

DJH:

Thanks for having me, and letting me ramble about a show I like. And Laura, Derek, Nicole. Don't screw up. Make it an epic finale!

Me:

No problem. Let us hope for a truly awesome finale. Thank you guys for reading this!
