The lights are on
There are some games that I think would do some good to the gaming world if they were resurrected from their hibernation all these years. I really hope others post some blogs like this so that I can establish a leveled understanding of what games they like to play and what expresses them best. Just so you know, remakes do not count as a sequel in my opinion, as well as touched-up ones that are the same thing but with a different title. Unless they offer something that the past title did not, it doesn't really seem like a sequel to me. If the game already has a sequel, but there hasn't been one for it in a long time, then I guess I can still count it. Here are my top five choices:
5. Gauntlet
When old-school gamers think of a retro arcade classic, they might start off with Pacman and Dragon's Lair, but as they delve deeper, they remember one gem that has become a main basis for most of the arcade games and video games that we enjoy. Gauntlet is just that title. One of the first few games to support four players at once, this mythical RPG arcade had a class-based system that you could choose from: the Warrior, the Wizard, The Sprite / Elf, and something like Valkyrie, I believe. Anyway, each class had their strong points and weak points and many would choose teamwork and strategy to figure out who would play best with which character. The enemies included ghosts, demons, bandits, and lobbers, which I'm certain threw bombs at you. The game progressively becomes more difficult and if you start to let your guard down, you could cost your entire team's chances of survival. Supposedly, in the older versions, a narrator would tell you what to do, as well as taunt you into playing better. This game has so many levels in it, that it almost never stops. It's a very tough but competitive game, and I know that they've made Gauntlet II as well as Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows, but it really is about the same as the first Gauntlet, Gauntlet Legends, and Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows was downright boring, so I hope someone decides to change the way we play this game by making another sequel for it.
4. Diablo III
You're right, this isn't really a sequel, because in order to be at the third installment, you have to go through a second. But, gee, how long has it been since the second? 9 - 10 years, people. It's a wonderful game that I couldn't get enough of at my cousin's house. The beautiful cutscenes for the game blew me away, and I honestly could not get enough of it. The attacking and slashing feel of the game was great, too. The multiplayer was tough to understand at the time, but you could use Battle.net, which is an impressive server. Out of the Amazon, Sorceress, Barbarian, Paladin, and the Necromancer, I prefer the Barbarian. Who doesn't want to melee your enemies into a pulp? A well-done game like this deserves a second (or third, in this case) coming. But, unfortunately, Blizzard has been changing their release date from 2008 to 2011. I can't believe how long it's taking them to make this game, but I will happily wait. Until then, this seriously should be looked into by gamers who haven't caught wind.
3. Psi-ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Okay, enough of the RPG-style games. Time to focus on some impressive but not as popular games. Now, I know some of you may think Psychonauts should be up here when it comes to psychological video games. But the thing is that, I'm almost positive that they'll make a sequel for it. I'm skeptical about Psi-ops though, because its sales were not as high as expected. This was an impressive game that had an abundant story and a great amount of cool battles. It had a cool cover system that made it easy to play and enjoy, plus the fights could get tough at times. The style in which it was made had great graphics for its time as well as some cool new ways to tactically fight using your psychic powers. The overall feeling of gaining his memory back makes you feel lost and confused as you play through the game. Although the final fight with the general and the ending cutscene were a bit sketchy, the screen said "To Be Continued..." and by those words, I feel that a sequel should seriously come out for it just so those words are satisfied.
2. TimeShift
Why not this game? What other game truly implements the coolest of things, time control? Other than that old Blinx Cat game, Prince of Persia, and Braid, I can't think of any. This game created not only its own basis of interesting weapons, a stylish suit, and a quality multiplayer, but a cool way to use time control as your ally. As you hunt down a man that has another suit like you in the past, you must stop him from taking over the world with his special power. When you finally confront him, you must stop him. Once you finally beat him, you go back to the bomb that actually killed your girlfriend, and when you take off your mask, you are propelled somewhere else. As corny as the ending was, the game's action and cutscenes spoke on the game's behalf. It delivered something new to the table, and although even GI gave it a 7.75/10, I think it's worthy of a sequel.
1. Freedom Fighters
This is an amazing game. I'm just going to start off with that. The instant I saw that great opening, I almost had a mini-freakout when I saw a Russian sub sneak into NYC. You lose your brother to the Reds, and you feel the utmost bit of revenge against the Reds that you decide to take leadership of the Rebellion into your own hands. You must search through many different urban yet modernized environments swarming with Ruskies, but the game would make sure an ally had your back with a tactical system similar to that of SOCOM, only easier to use. Fall back to charge to defend here were basic but suitable commands necessary to get you safely to the other side of each level. Sometimes you would have to sneak through a trainyard, or maybe through a large industrial parking lot and even a news building that would have flickering lights on or off which would raise goosebumps on your arms everytime you would find an enemy. The overall thrill factor of the night modes and the intense gun battling added to the mood of chaos that the game created. Everywhere you would go, you would have to find strategic ways to get to different points that would make the game advance. The fun part about saving citizens would be that they would have a Metal Gear Solid exclamation mark above them. The guns were impressive, with realistic sounds and typical models. It was pretty much the first game I had ever seen that used Molotovs at the time, and the weapon wheel was simple to figure out. The music was gorgeous and they even developed its own soundtrack, especially for the Russian chorus that blew me away during some of the game cutscenes. Speaking of which, the graphics were mighty impressive, and despite the fact that I've seen better at the time, it had very large levels as well as vast multiplayer maps. The multiplayer itself was great. Too bad, that it had to be split-screen because if this would have been for Xbox LIVE, I think it would have swept Halo under the rug. There were some great levels for playing with multiple people, and the fun of it was quite entertaining. And the best part of the game is that it may be the only shooter past 2002 that has a cheat code system (excluding GTA games). The cheat codes for this game were so cool, like ragdoll mode, which would change the entire physics of the game and when you would kill someone, they would fly across the screen. There would be a slowmo mode so if you mixed it with ragdolls, they would fly real slow, too. There are plenty of other cheats as well as an extra level at the end where if you beat it, you get to jump inside the Statue of Liberty and it says something that I forget. Its reminiscent style of third person shooter really set the tone for Gears of War in my opinion. Even though it's not exactly like Gears of War's display, it feels very similar. You should seriously play this game for about two weeks and go crazy. It has a great, momentous ending, and I think this game is completely worthy of a sequel. I've heard of one in the works, but nothing has truly come up with IO other than that it would be on their "to-do" list.
i played time shift it wasn't bad but i never played those other games
