Switch Lights

The lights are on

The devil is the details: A report on model trains by a guy who doesn't know enough about them.

Whew! That's a long title. Anyway on with the story. I have a routine at night with my 5 year old. Right before he goes to sleep at night we watch Thomas the train. I like the show not just because it makes my little one sleepy. I like the show because of the model trains.

I love model trains. To me they are a work of art, even old Thomas (pictured above) is amazing to look at.

The funny thing is I am not a fan of real trains. I worked around a train yard for a year burying telephone cables and fiber optic lines, I almost went deaf.  Models trains however, I marvel at the little wonders.

Look at that attention to detail. This is from The Model Railway Club in the UK (That means United Kingdom) They are the oldest  and largest model train society (est. 1910) Do the math kiddies, that is OLD.

These guys when they start a project they just don't go and grab a can of spray paint and some Lego's and shout, "Let's do this!". No projects usually start out  with photographs and historical documents. Once all the background information is done then everybody's favorite enemy is used, math. (NO! NOT MATH! aahh)

By the way all these amazing photos can be seen at  http:/themodelrailwayclub.org

Now  I know some cynical types are going "these dudes have way too much time on their hands.) Really? How long have you spent on World of Warcraft?...Alright as I was saying. These Guys do their  work. Take this for example.

The name of this project is called Copehagen Fields.

This next shot the building is 6cm high.(yeah that's awesome I don't care who you are.)

They started the plans on this project in 1983 it was exhibited as a "work in progress" in the early 1990"s.

They still are not finished but the cool part is that is can be dismantled in 2 hours and set up in 5 hours.

Oh,  and it's all hand built from scratch.  This is a work of art, no a work of love. Love for a hobby that most see as lame, tedious, and dorky. A hobby that not everyone can do because of lack of money, space and free time. But these fine men deserve our respect for they are the forefathers of gamers.

Without these fine men throwing themselves into their hobby, how could we justify the time we spend in Final Fantasy? Could you hold your head high after getting that platinum trophy in MOH if it were not the men of the tiny rails? I say salute the proud men of the model rails.

For they earned it. thank you for your time.

I don't know where it started but I too always had interest in model trains. It's a project I would like to one day work one. Problems are you need alot of room which I don't have and there are other expenses that come first. *sigh* Maybe one day. Good blog man.
  • That's amazing! Those models are really well done. I think it would be cool to make something like that.
  • I would like go into model trains once Im an old feeble man that games no longer appeal to (except for the wii for some reason).
