Blind Optimism?

I think this is the year of the Wii. It's got Epic Mickey (nov. 1), GoldenEye 007 (nov. 2), Kirby's Epic Yarn (oct. 13), and DK Country Returns (nov. 11). Hell, Red Steel 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2, No More Heroes 2, and Tatsunoko (I hope I spelt that right)  vs. Capcom already came out. I haven't played Other M yet, so I don't know how it is. Overall though, I'm hopeful.  Unless GoldenEye and Epic Mickey mess it up, this will be a good year with a good harvest. I need this to be the year where people go 'Hey, that game looks fun' and DON'T buy Wii Play. I need this to be the year where I start taking my Wii seriously and don't use it as a foot rest. I need (more) good Wii games.

Wow, that was a short blog.

Uh... did I forget any games?

  • I have had a Wii for 3 years now and haven't played it in 2. I thought motion controls would be fun, then I played Madden 08 (or 07) and I was done. I like running the ball, and in order to lower my shoulder in-game, I had to stab the remote forward....every single time. The only other option to play was with EAsy Play enabled, making every move a one button touch. I tried other games, and doing anything in game seemed cumbersome, inaccurate, and an exercise in futility!

    Eff the Wii!

I am so disheartened by my experiences with it...

    - So many horribly controlled games

    - Lackluster graphics (I seriously think the GameCube had better in most cases)

    - Little to no third party games worth playing

    - Nearly zero mature content (not that I need my games to be rated M, but I am an adult, puppies with big eyes and mini game packs are not for me)

    - Game price tags every bit as expensive as the PS3 or 360

All of that just mean that my Wii will continue to rot on my bookcase, and is in constant danger of getting thrown up on eBay for quick cash. I would have to score some serious games, seriously cheap, to even consider dusting off my Wii again.

  • I have a Wii in my house it belongs to my parents and I'm seriously thinking about adopting as my own for the virtual console, after watching SMB 3 I decided that there are a bunch of great old NES games that I would love to play again as well as the SNES games and what not...does anyone have an opinion on the virtual console or am I just living in the past...

  • If I had a Wii that's where I'd be spending most of my time.

One question I have is does it have the Genesis versions for titles that were on both systems but were actually different games, like Aladdin or Jurassic Park?

In both of those cases, they're games I put tons of hours in, and they're markedly different and arguably much better than their SNES counterparts (for instance the SNES JP is a weird top down adventure game that throws in some awkward first-person action sequences, whereas the Genesis JP is a side-scrolling platformer that's action heavy and much more impressive graphically).

As far as it being the year of Wii; Wii isn't even really in competition with the other main consoles anymore- it operates in a weird parallel space. On the one hand when you look at the number of consoles sold, Nintendo is clearly ahead, on the other, when you look at software sold per unit, it is very far behind 360 in the West, and the PS3 is increasing it's software units: hardware units ratio, whereas Wii is not. The Wii seems like it is capable of making money for Nintendo and no one else, very few third party games on Wii have made any real impression in the NPD charts, while Nintendo's own titles have been all over the top ten month-to-month, for years now. So no, I don't see any real shift for Wii wherein they would start putting up better numbers of software sales. No moves have been made to give greater support to 3rd parties developing for the platform; there are some great games coming down the pipe, but Nintendo always has a few huge titles a year, and in that same period dozens of games that are destined for the bargain bin, even if they're House of the Dead or MadWorld.

  • I at least find one or two games a year that make me keep the Wii but compared to my other systems its got nothing.
