Sleeping dogs is a third person shooter set in the dangerous underworld of hong kong. You play as wei shen an undercover cop on his most dangerous mission yet. Infiltrating the sun on yee. Sleeping dogs is very heavily inspired by kung fu movies. The combat is also very much a mix of different gameplay styles. The story behind sleeping dogs is a tale of corruption and revenge. It starts as just another assignment and slowly becomes one mans quest to avenge his family, and take down the triad that kill them. Sleeping dogs has a few different styles of gameplay. There is hand to hand combat, gun play and vehicle controls. The hand to hand controls feel a bit like one of the batman arkham games. You can chain together combos as you're fighting, just like one of the batman games. The grappling mechanic is very useful to one hit kill an enemy, For example you can grab your enemy and throw him into a vent on the well, For a brutal one hit kill. The hand to hand combat is your main way of dealing with your enemies. The gun play is very few and far between, However is it very easy to learn and fun to use once you get a gun. For most of the game you use hand to hand combat, unless you play a mission that requires you to use one, Or kill a cop and take his. The vehicles' controls are very fun once you get the hang of it, Which does not take that long to learn. The controls are very close to just cause 2, Mostly because you can jump from car to car and shoot well in the car. There are a few different types of vehicles' to use in sleeping dogs. You have your basic car, Than there are sports car and trucks. Plus motorcycles and boats. The steering and handling is very different for each type of vehicle. Cars are the most basic and easy to use whereas motorcycles are more twitchier to use, However they are your best mode of getting around hong kong. Than you have boats, Boats are the hardest to get used to and the worst to control. Boats are the slowest and handle very poorly. Sleeping dogs offers a lot of fun side missions to complete when your not playing one of the main missions. To name a few there are, Cockfights, Karaoke, Fight clubs and street races. When you complete any of those side missions you gain face, Which is a different type of upgrade for wei. There are cop and triad mission as well. Most of those missions have you running around hong kong doing one thing or another for one of the main characters. They also have a different type of upgrade for wei. You may as you're driving around hong kong happen to find a couple of random events. Which just give wei a little bit of face, But they do lead to some pretty cool upgrades. Sleeping dogs graphics are pretty good looking, For the most part. Some of the characters don't look that great, And a lot of the buildings look fuzzy. The vehicles looks great and so does wei, but overall it lacks polish. Hong kong in sleeping dogs is not very big and a lot of it starts to look the same after a while. It also has day and night cycles plus, Rain and flog so that might be part of the problem. It's all just a big mix of different things that don't all fit. The sound is like the graphics, not great but not awful. Some of the dialogue is in chinese which is cool but you need to have subtitles turned on, And just like some kung fu movies the characters and their voices don't always match up. However the up side is the music on the radio sounds really great, And they have some good songs as well. Overall, Sleeping dogs is a fun third person shooter, That has a lot of replay value in trying to complete all the side quests and find all the lockboxs and jade statues. The story is a bit on the stupid side. They really try to build a relationship between you and wei, However it does not really work. The sound and graphics really lack polish and jus miss the mark. The controls easy to learn and fun once you get the hang of them. Sleeping dogs is neat and fun game with some unique controls and lack luster graphics and sound. Not as intense as Grand Theft Auto and not as crazy as Saints Row. But i think sleeping dogs can hold its own against games like that. And is well worth a look over a weekend.
