I passed my Comptia Network + certification yesterday evening. Needless to say, it wasnt all that bad. I credit watching Professor Messer vids on Youtube and alot of text booking to my current success. Much more of my credit goes to my IT instructors at my college. I'm happy to say the least and I intend on acing the CCNA in June of next month; yea I know thats ust right around the corner, and I hear it's a beast cooked in yeast!! But I will give it my all. It's crunch time basically, but I have a good foundation upon which everything is built in IT, so I think if I continue with my studies like I am, I'll pass it. Stay tuned.

A Poem.

I smile, but it’s often painted. Inside I am fatigued from a journey before you knew me, and I am so tired; though you would never know it by the visual. By the visual cues that are subtle to a lazy eye that could care less; a person who has never been alone doesn’t know the cold chill that excluding solitude brings, when it’s raining and the sound of even the rain is blocked out by the numbing feeling of said chill, that is the extent to which I speak solitude. I have been to this place, cold and unforgiving, a deep pool of bitter winter that threatened to consume me if I let it. A bad place to be was this place, not charted on any map, or graphed on any globe, this place was in the farthest reaches of my mind, in a time in my life where the sun appeared to be the moon and I couldn’t smile very much.

Having progressed from such a gloom as my past; as fast as it seems to have gone by in hindsight, it’s still slow to go away completely. Oh I wish I could completely delete it repeatedly, as to make sure it stays away and leaves me alone. If regret and bitterness were my only thoughts, which they were, then a penny for my thoughts would have made me a wealthy man; but who pays for a sad song anymore? No one I know, so I won’t sing anymore…….

I am very ambitious with my studies and I sincerely hope it all pays off; namely because I have certifications coming up in next month for Network + and CCNA. Realistically I feel I am ready for the Net + but not so much for the CCNA as Cisco has its own terms, protocols, and standards that I am still learning. But that is only a sign to me that I need to invest more time in it before I commit to an actual free exam provided by my school. I would be a fool not to.

I made this blog out of an aspiration to gain quite a few certs over the next couple of years, and I’m going to list the ones I have my eyes on currently:

1.

    Network +

Comptia has been on my mind day in and day out since I started college last year, and I honestly have become obsessed with this cert. An entry-level certification that validates the holders understanding of foundation network jargon and concepts. I feel that I will certainly obtain this one first.

2.

    A +

Again with Comptia, I am going to be going after the A + certification on a merely personal note. I wouldn’t try to obtain it for any significant boost in pay but having it certainly can’t hurt me or my resume. My instructor calls this cert a “dying art”, as not many employers may be looking for people with it. But I refuse to let it pass by as it can certainly come in handy. Who would you hire? A guy who is a genius with NOS software and server farms but not with fixing them physically, or a guy who is a genius at both?

3.

    Server +

Comptia, much to my surprise has quite the list of certs to achieve. So when I ran across Server + I was like, “yes!”. I understand at a basic level the importance of servers and how any pc can practically be one given enough resources’ and responsibilities on a network, so I know having a cert that says just that will be to my benefit. It’ll be a compliment to the ones before it.

4.

    Linux +

Why not go ahead and learn another OS while I’m at it huh? I mean really, we know Windows in its many variations is the dominate OS but can it be a bad thing to know how to work the competition? Absolutely not. In this age of Dual Booting, to know one type of interface may be crippling to oneself in the long run. If I can find a Mac OS x cert, I might just go for that to out of pure curiousity.

5.

I mean really, security? Who doesn’t need it? Next.

6.

This cert is not associated with either Comptia or Cisco but it’s a cert regardless and it deals with 802.11, my least favorite technology in the world.

7.

    CCNA

Last but far from least is, to me, the Holy Grail of certs that I can achieve at this time in my life. To be Cisco Certified Network Associate or Admin means instant fat pockets anywhere I go in the world. Granted I am a long way from the coveted CCIE but this certification is certainly a good start in that direction. At a minimum I could probably demand $60,000 with just this cert.

Collectively with all the certifications listed, I could probably demand triple digit figures for a salary depending on what I’m applying for and the location. With these certs, even though the majority of them are entry level from Comptia, I could certainly go places that I may not be able to in the industry otherwise. And that entices me all the more.

I want to state a fact here, I may sound like I am grinding for these certs purely for the pay, but that’s far from the truth. I love technology and the way it has made life soooo much easier for us all. I grew up looking at traffic lights trying to figure them out and understand the circuitry and LEDs inside that makes them change like they do; the power cables on poles in neighborhoods and business areas that send information around the world in seconds fascinates me like nothing else. Technology fascinates me like nothing else. So naturally to be able to make a lot of money doing what I love to do is going to make me pursue whatever it takes for me to be happy with my career. Money is secondary as I desire to be in business for myself one day, and to do that I better get certified.

In other news but still in the same vein, I may need to travel away from home to gain any job that pays well. Regardless of what certs I get if there aren’t any employers who are willing to pay me what I’m worth, then what was the point of me even gaining the certs in the first place? But like I said, I may have to move because I know the state I live in sucks, or at least the city does as far as work goes. Heck I may even have to leave the country, in which case I won’t hesitate. If the opportunity and money presents itself, I think anyone would follow suit and leave home, but not everyone.

Anyway, that’s my list and I hope to add to it as the time goes on. Just know that these are the “Prime 7” that I am going to push for with everything in me. I desire a good life like anyone else and thankfully I’m still young enough to go after it. It starts with me.

Dilemma!!

We all have been there; in a situation where there was a lose-lose outcome but a choice had to be made anyway. This semester’s critical thinking classes have really opened my eyes to some of these lose-lose situations that I have had in my past. Choices that I have personally made that I wish I hadn’t, choices that could have been handled differently but the outcome may have been the same regardless, so would it have really mattered if I did? I guess I’ll never know.

The object of my blog today is coming out of the phenomenon known as “Moral Dilemma”. A moral dilemma is as defined by the Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy:

Situations in which each possible course of action breaches some otherwise binding moral principle. Serious dilemmas make the stuff of many tragedies. The conflict can be described in different ways. One suggestion is that whichever action the subject undertakes, she or he does something wrong, or something she or he ought not to do. Another is that this is not so, for the dilemma means that in the circumstances what she or he did was right, or as right as any alternative. It is important to the phenomenology of these cases that action leaves a residue of guilt and remorse, although again (provided it was not the subject’s fault that she or he got into the dilemma) the rationality of these emotions can be contested.

Read more: http://www.answers.com/topic/moral-dilemmas-1#ixzz1HRxqxtZl

As I said, we all have been there; a situation where no matter what choice you make, the outcome may be a bad one. I have often tried in these kinds of situations to choose the lesser of two evils, making a choice that isn’t as severe as the other, even though they are both bad and only one can be logically chosen. I personally hate these moments when there seems to be no right answer and yet there are 2, a bad answer and an even worse one. How do you make the right call when your only calls to make could both either cause problems for you or for someone else? I don’t ask that question for the person who is a realist here but maybe the towards the passivist at heart, the peacefull types who don’t look for trouble and who try to love everyone.

I’m learning about the subtlies between moral and ethic, and the lines can blur. I understand that both of them involve situations where there can be conflict and then the respective party has to make a choice. That choice is either ethically moral or unethically moral; and I feel that when the latter is chosen, this brings with it moral dilemma. But I’m no Ph.D in the matter, I’m an Associate level student who is just thinking out loud here, so humor me. When we are presented with a choice that we know can either cause a problem for us or someone else or even the company we are employed with, and we know that we have to make that call or else the morale of things could suffer, what do we do? What do you do?

Have you ever just stopped one day and looked at your cell phone? I just had a moment of complete awe as I did just this; I wasn’t even thinking about it when it hit me. Consider for a moment what exaclty is in the palm of your hand everytime you make a phone call, or surf the web, or text someone in another part of the word. Consider the power and the sheer awesomeness of the cellular phone and where it has come from in our time; when I say our time I mean the generation from the 80’s til now. Just look at your cell phone and take a minute to really think about what is in your hands and what it can do in terms of keeping a you in the loop and connected. It’s amazing isn’t it? A wireless device that can allow us to be mobile, just about anywhere in the world and still connect with those we care about and even some that we don’t so much, as much as we want to.

Most of society today is up on smart phones, that being your Fruitberrys(blackberry), some variation of HTC, Windows 7 Phones, so on and so on; so everyone is connected wirelessly to all kinds of outlets like social media, groups, clubs, businesses and whatnot. But has anyone every thought, “wow, I’m able to pay bill from my phone now, that is AWESOME” or “I can’t believe I met my husband of 5 years on FaceBook mobile”? I don’t think the awesomeness of technology today has really hit alot of people yet, and I think when it does people will have a whole new appreciation for the things most people take for granted. But maybe I’m exaggerating the topic here, I mean not everyone gets excited by technological advances that make life easier for us.

Still, you can’t deny that the tech that is available to us isn’t anything short of incredible. I mean the cell phone that I’m ranting on about is just one kind of advancement that man has made over the past 20 + years or so, consider your PC that you use on the regular. The resources that your computer provides is invaluble to most peoples day to day routine, without that PC in place I’m content in thinking that most people wouldn’t be able to function right or get anything done. Long gone are the days of “sneakernet”, which is essentially a network made up of people walking around to deliver the information by hand to whoever it’s meant for. Long gone are the days of DOS and plain text based environments that took computer geniuses to figure them out; now we have networks that consist of elaborate topologies and bright colorful interfaces that anyone can really use. Again, not everyone gets a hard-on when this type of stuff is talked about and not everyone is going to care, but the technology of today is in fact amazing and it’s even more amazing how many people don’t think about or even care how that tech works or where it has come from, they just want it to work.

I wish I dated a gamer chick, race unimportant, whether or not she even works I don’t care. I just would like to date a girl who is into video games like I am and who is competitive as crap. I think it would be a challenge to me and I think the relationship would be very dynamic and never static. I would enjoy this kind union because of the common interest that we would obviously share; I mean obviously there would have to be other things that we could offer each other than a common interest like we need to be able to talk to each other for more than 10 minutes without games. We should be able to joke around with each other and we should be able to be real and honest with each other. Beyond all that though, I think this would be interesting to say the least and I’m waiting for that fateful day.

I can imagine it now; sex with this gamer chick would either really be the best ever, or it would really suck. I gather this not from actual facts but from just an assumption that we both would be so competitive that we may cancel each other out, if that makes any sense. Like with games it’s a given that we will be very connected and intent on besting each other every round, I don’t see many casual game night with her. So I can imagine what the sex might be like; we will either be so competitive that our need to best each other in games extends over into the bedroom. In that case, the sex would be awesome because we would be so determined to out please each other, that can be a good thing. OOORRR, our competitive streak could burn us out and sex would just be blah. Like we could play 600 rounds of halo and be so tired of each other after we tie in the last round that sex wouldn’t even be mentally possible. Maybe Im being too dramatic though, I mean there are people who meet their lovers and soulmates in online games and they work out just fine because of that common interest. They have a happy medium and that is what keeps alot of them together. So why couldn’t it work for me?

I got the notion to post about this because for one thing, the industry that Im going into deals alot with the resources in my topic today. And another thing, I realize that employers aren’t just looking at paper applications anymore, the networking sites of the world are in a sense, the resumes they are after now.

“Employers dont look at my facebook, thats crazy”, is it really that far fetched in this day of technological advances? In this day of employers wanting to be more cautious of who they hire, and for good reason. What better way to get to know someone before you even call them into the office than to run their names through such websites like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and Youtube. You can learn a great deal about someone by the post or videos they make, and from that a much greater discovery of that particular candidate can be made. I believe all employers, well, a good 80 % of them are actual gaining information from social media today to help in the decision making process of hiring the next IT Specialist, or the next Home Care Physician. Wouldn’t you want to know who is really working for you.

Granted, not every little detail about someone is going to be in their social profile, but I stick to the idea that a great deal can be learned about this person of interest from the first post to the last. So yes, in this day of technological advancements, best believe that when you apply for a job anywhere, a good 8 or 9 times out of 10, you will be searched out in the social media for an idea on your character, skills, affiliations, education, certifications, views on certain things, and any other means of finding out more about you on a more professional level.

My advice to anyone who isn’t up to speed on this yet, is to be more considering of what you post, because once it’s out there, its out there. I personally can attest to having something from my past that I put online come right back around and bite me on the butt. It happens. So be careful from now on, and really sell yourself, without selling parts that are too intimate. Use social media as a means of establishing yourself. In essence, you can look at blogs, facebook, youtube, twitter, and myspace, just to name a few, as a virtual resume, because that’s kind of what they are. So be more selective in how you present yourself….. Employers are watching.

I have been smacked in the nuts almost errday in this semester; I mean it has been hard from day one. Now I’m not one to complain about anything really, I mean it has to be something massive for me to even sneeze at let alone let it get to me, but gosh darn it I am numb from the proverbial nut smackage that has been my third semester in my first college ever. This is largely my bad because I had a blonde moment at the beginning of this semester that just threw off my whole rhythm of how I wanted to complete things. Since that day, the nut smacks were rampant and very unforgiving; since that day I have had a hard time making it through this portion of my educational pursuits.

I blame me; I blame my momentary lack of attention to detail and over-confidence in myself. It’s ok that I got Presidents List twice and all, but I was getting cocky a bit, I was getting comfortable, somewhere I never want to be. I let the allure of my accomplishments surround me in the illusion of grandeur that “hey, I’m Presidents List; I can miss however many days I want and still maintain a 4.0 GPA easy, cause I’m important”. REALITY CHECKS ARE A KICK IN THE NUTS! And these are the same nuts that suffered from perpetual smacks up until this point.

I have moved beyond that point honestly, I really didn’t have much of a validated choice to stay there; either I straighten up and get my head out of the clouds or I get so far gone that I can’t return. To me, there would be nothing worse than for me to fail and forget why I came to this school in the first place; then to not only forget but to play like everything is cool, like I got a plan for my life on the streets, I know what I’m doing. No, not me, I don’t curse anymore but HELL NO that isn’t going to happen to me, not again it won’t. I am going to straighten up and maintain my GPA but eating these books for breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, another snack, midnight snack, mid-dream snack, morning snack and breakfast again until I get where I want to be. My logic is that nerds get paid and I will be collecting a fat paycheck when I leave BSC, so help me!

Pardon my ranting but I realize that this semester has been soooooo much different than my previous two and I’m soooooo close to getting it right in my life, I’m soooooo close to being better off than I was before; I can’t mess it up. This is an awesome opportunity to excel and I will take it for all that its worth, I’ll all the nut smacks if it means I can reclaim what I lost, my sense of direction. Look out fourth Semester, I’M COMING FOR YOU!

No doubt you are experiencing what over 75 million other people in the world are experiencing with the PSN. Announced earlier this week, Sony has been having some intermittent issues that seem to have capped and the network is down for roughly "a full day or two". Well, I'm soooo glad I don't have a PS3 today because I would be piiiiiIIIIiiissed in my pants at Sony. Still, even though I don't have a PS3 I harbor some inner rage at the mega-company for this outtage outrage. I mean, I'm a fanboy and it bothers me that this isn't the first time Sony has had network issues to this magnitude. Let's not forget the credit card expose'.

I can see this turning many faithful away from Sony and making Microsoft very happy in terms of profit. Bill Gates is probably doing a naked happy dance in his bedroom as you read this right now because of this news. Considering the timing of this outtage I don't think it could have came at a more horrible time; there are some big titles out now that people want to play online, Black Ops, Killzone 3, and so on. Not to mention the fact that it happened on a weekend and an extended weekend at that with Easter Sunday leading into next week for many. This may not hurt Sony's pockets that much, but the will certainly lose some cred if they don't make some serious changes soon to both keep this from happening again and to keep their customers content seeing as to how they're losing a considerable amount of game time. I would hope Sony issues compensation, a free month of gaming with premium access perhaps? OOOoooo. They can afford it.

Annnnnywaaaay, hang in there Sony faithful, if any of you are still faithful that is lol. And for those of you who are blessed to have the best of both or all worlds because you have all 3 this gen consoles, enjoy that option to play another console online at will.

In addition, research show disturbing links between exposure to violent video games and desensitization to violence in the real world. Players of violent video games are also likely to become more aggressive. This is especially a problem with young players; since children are extremely susceptible to harmful message transmitted by the games they play (Lee, M. This is the main idea of the article I chose and it does well to point out several valid points that I agree can happen to any child of young age. However as an aspiring video game developer, I am in opposition of those who blame the video game industry for the deaths and injuries of these children.

In the very first sentence of my article there is a family used to show addiction; a couple in Korea who left there four-month-old daughter unattended in their apartment for 5 straight hours while they went out to play video games at a nearby café, they came home and found the child dead (“Counterpoint,” 2009, para. 3). With this it’s easy to see where the blame clearly goes to; it’s a case of child neglect by older people who should have known better as adults. This is a matter of both addiction and irresponsibility and it can be argued either way, but the video game company that made that game should not catch shrapnel because of the choices of these people in this case. The reason I say this is because there are boards and organizations in place such as the ESRB, GRB, and PEGI that rate and label video games with the appropriate age levels to prevent situations like this from happening, but in the case of parental neglect, there is no rating or censorship in place to help protect the children that can’t protect themselves from addicted parents.

In cases where children, often young children at that, are hurt, hurting other children, and/ or killed because they played a game with a rating for adults and tried to mimic what they saw, I can only look at the parents and think of how lax or uninformed they must have been to allow the child to have such media access.

Beyond Parental Control

The blame game is not solely on the shoulders of parents in this day and time as the media that children can access is abundant and it is everywhere that they are in some form or another. It doesn’t take a child to walk into a Wal-Mart and buy a video game to get subjected to violence and sexualized characters as they do, and by children I’m referring to an age bracket of between 8-16 years old, as reported by a 2007 survey conducted by the National Institute on Media and the Family. The report says, “86 percent of American children aged 8-16 play video games in their homes” (“Counterpoint,” 2009, para. 9), that number has surely exceeded 100 percent since then as the attention put on marketing towards the younger generation has grown more “aware” of children’s gullibility over the years.

The blame game can rest a great deal on the shoulders of not just marketing ploys but the lack of controlling and policies in place by certain retailers who sell video games. Most retailers didn’t and probably still don’t check for ID, they don’t have policies in place and they aren’t liable for anything beyond the store after a purchase. However in this current time, many retailers have realized it’s not good for business to allow any kid to just walk in and buy a game in which all you do is behead people in it.

Even before a child can gain access to most media in this day and age, they have to in most cases go through their parent(s), which brings me back to my case in point. Learning begins in the home for children, what they are taught initially, what they are shown initially and what they are allowed to have contributes in how they grow and what they will do with what they’ve learned. It’s the parents responsibility to govern what the child has access to in the home and it’s the parents responsibility to be informed about the media that is out there and that is available not just on the internet anymore.

Conclusion

The author of this article closes in saying that “not all video games are gruesome and sexist” but that no video game can compare with the positive benefits of literature and other activities (“Counterpoint,” 2009, para. 11). I partly agree with this and partly don’t, on account of how there is an abundance of lies and fabricated story telling in some literature, namely the local newspaper; I personally don’t believe in everything I read. If a young person of suitable age can gain knowledge from reading about D-Day in 1944 but can get even greater perspective by playing through the eyes of a computer generated soldier who is storming the beach of Normandy on D-Day, which would be the greater value? For him to read what it must have been like, or for him to experience what it was like through detail intensive re-creations? Video games create this possibility of learning while playing in many instances without doing harm to history.

My conclusion is that video games are not the cause of irresponsibility or addiction. I do not agree with the bad representation that many good game companies have garnered over the years because of the uninformed parent who hand their child a $50 dollar bill ever so often and send then to the local Game stop oblivious to what that child may pay for that’s not suitable for them. Retailers that do not enforce some kind of policy to control what is sold to minors are just as responsible as the parents who let their children play anything. A violent child isn’t born violent and socially inert, and there are ratings and organizations in place to help keep it that way; parents are ultimately the filter between child and video game, and to help in that cause, parents of the future are going to have to become more aware of the types of media that are targeting their children and how easy it is to gain access to it. It begins at home, and it ends with what’s been taught.

Back 2 It!

So moving on, lets see what else have I been up to since my last blog here.... Oh, college life has consumed me. Im studying for my Net + in Janurary of 2011 and it's a beast. Im hoping for the best though because I've put a lot into this and denied myself the pleasures of life for that cert. OH, and speaking of sex; ive had three propositions for booty since this semster began this October and I must say, I turned them all down. Just couldnt do it ya'll, tempting as it may be, and still is lol. I prefer to get what I came for first, like my degree, just to name one thing.

AANNDD another thing, Jinno is a beast! how do I know, well over the course of last weekend i went ahead and purchased Afro Samurai: The Complete Murder Sessions. I am now a fan of this freakin series and Im hoping soooo bad that a third season comes out because im gonna be the first in line to get it. The emotion, the art style, RZA's beats just gave it a feel on it own. Much love going out to Takashi Okazaki for this one, it made my weekend.

Speaking of samurai, you wanna know whats hot???

GIRL FREAKING NINJAS THATS WHATS!!! I suddenly desire the gf with a hidden life of keeping either an ancient evil bound up or cleaning up the streets at night by kicking the faces in of would-be thugs. that would be kinda cool to me, though my significance and ego will need constant stroking to make me "believe" Im relevant compared to her lol.

anyway ya'll, im back and OH SHNAPS has 2010 been an awesome year in gaming. we had all kinds of great titles drain our wallets, StarCraft 2 (finally), Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, news of Killzone 3 coming next year, all just to name a few. Its gonna be one heck of a try, but im convinced that 2011 will be even better. we'll see. happy late thanksgiving to you all, everyone email me your leftovers if you have any, if not, I'll be over your houses for Christmas to freeload; just a heads up lol. laterz.

i passed my asvab!! Looks like I'm fittin to get me sum overtime in. Anywho I got a call from a fellow "exterminator" who mentioned these new types of flesh bags he dubbed, "fat-fart".

Apparently he's been on the receiving end of one of these "fat fart" attacks, according to him their quick on their feet and r strangely attracted to flushing toilets, they also won't hesitate to spew the illustrated peeyuu in the pic when close enough, but be extra careful if u encounter a male fat fart, those sons of sardines can hit u from several yards away with disturbing accuracy, depending on which way the weather blows. Personally I'm lactose intolerant to fire, I can't stand it, its all hot and stuff. Thats just me now, so when I heard this, I'm not gonna lie to u, it made me wonton for a freezer asap.

But its getting hairy out there, well at least I am, I haven't shaved in months, but that's not my point. With a new type like the fat fart roaming the streets, its just that much more dangerous to walk outside with just a bat and a pair of socks, u gotta arm up and take thoughs buggers out from a distance. Just a friendly blog to update would be zombie hunters who may encounter this new type, keep ur eyes open, ur nose open, ur nose booger free and try not to flush any toilets or else they'll come running. Go ahead and laugh, its ok. Anyway I just so happen to stumble across such a medium in the form of a digital comic. One by the name of LAN, thats Light Apprentice Nate for u tech geeks who automatically assumed u knew what the comics about:p. Nate is a young boy raised to fight in the 100-Year War. He's an aspiring Light Knight that has spent 300 years in a coma, awoken by the blueling wizard TLOB, the secrets of NATE’s past remain shrouded. Brazilian-born artist IGOR NORONHA ( ZUDA COMICS’ SIDEWISE) blends comics and animation in his first creator-owned work for mobiles! The story sounds serious but its not. Humor abounds in this comic and it already has me hooked to its narrative. I enjoyed the issue #0 as it found Nate traversing a cavern that was once a giant insect, he comes upon an prisoner who's being held captive by an orge. I won't spoil the rest but just know I recommend it for the casual reader and for though who just luv fantasy and adventure comics. http://tlobstudios.com/
