The lights are on
the has been a debate going on for many years now in the game spectrum about the validity of games being seen as just media or as art. now i think its time for the Nutts to weigh in on such a thing as this because as u might expect, theres a fairly decent amount of say on both sides. to start, i believe video games r not just media. it takes so much to produce a game that to put it in such a confined space is not going to cut it. there r games out there that trump all over a Martin Scorsecee anyday, and u call thoughs just media? there r ppl who look at FF7 and see nuthing but a fantasy and cant wrap their minds around it as anything other than what it is, just a video game. thats limiting the directors and the producers who spent months on into months pouring their heart and sumtimes souls into these forms of "art" so that u and i could still enjoy them for years to come.
u look at a movie like The Titanic, Leonardo Dicaprio in his prime and see how such emotion was pulled out of the crowd because of its fact based happenings, and u call that art in motion, but u side it with Halo 3 and see the unmaskings of the Ark and the fight to stop it from being, now thats not factual in the least, but the concept of it and the pull of emotion on the player who has played every iteration before it is probably the same as The Titanic, maybe even more, and u call that just a game and not nearly on the level The Titanic was.
what makes Art, Art? what makes a Game, a Game? where is the line between them crossed or intersected? Look, games have to be art, so much work and prep and more work goes into such mediums of poetry, poetry of good and evil often times, poetry of loss, of gain, of power, of revenge, games exude that in many forms, same as sum movies.ppl r so quick to call The Departed a masterpiece but not Metal Gear Solid 4? why, much to my surprise even Hideo Kojima said it himself that he feels as though games r not art, in this months issue of GI, check it for urself. and this is the guy who made MGS, a title of pure awesomeness that has captured the hearts of millions with Solid Snake, he doesnt even give his own game credit for what it really is, Art.
i guess what this blog was really about was to try and lay it out there in my own word and of my own perspective, that video games r not just creations of nerds who seek to keep ppl glued to the tube, but every game that ever has been and that ever will be, is art, in motion. granted, not many things can compare to the mona lisa or the eiffel tower, but then again what can compare to Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic and the New Republic or Killzone 2 in terms of ambition and premise? Games r art for sure and i debate it with anyone who says otherwise, puting ur all into a wall mural is the same as putting ur all into a games coding, its perspective yes, but its art, and it takes learning of that art to perfect it. so in my opinion once again, yes they r art and ppl, especially those who make them need to really get sum more perspective on the matter, great games come from great minds, collectively i mean, not just from one person, so to say that ur game is not art, i think its downing urself in a sense. and all the hard work thats be put into it. im just saying. what do u think?
yes, agree with the Nutts u will.
Funtional art. The greatest art IMO is the art you can interact with. Like a Bonsai tree.
Hideo Kojima looks funny haha. Anyway, while not as poetically as I would have put it, your statements are true: video games can be both media and art, as well as any other form of media. The question is always gonna be who's asking and who's rating though, a simple fact of life.
thanks guys.
Hideo Kojima makes me so mad! lol. I think the only reason he said that was for attention. His games are art whether he likes it or not. Good blog, sir.
thanks sirrr
