The lights are on
OK! Continuing with my favorite female music artists... is a woman who has been a legend on the Broadway stage for YEARS! Her voice is very unique and she has some of the most powerful vocal cords that I have ever heard. She's such a phenom... that she was big enough to hold a solo concert in Carnegie Hall, which if you know anything about music ladies and gentlemen... that's big. The names that are up there for the same calibur are Frank Sinatra, Elvis Prestley, Liza Minelli, the Beatles... to name a few.
Throughout her career, Miss Peters has worked on several plays by composer Stephen Sondheim, and she has been called "the voice of Sondheim" and they work closely together. While she does not write most of her music (rather many composers have written roles for her), she has penned to single as of recent date... and she has also written a childrens book (with a sequel to come out soon). Bernadette has appeared in TV and Film media... shows such as the Muppets, What's My Line?, and Ugly Betty, movies such as Annie and The Jerk with Steve Martin.
Some of her best recordings are from the CD of her live show "Sondheim Ect." in which such moving performances as "Being Alive", "No One is Alone", "Faithless Love", and "Not a Day Goes By" were matched with happy and peppy tunes such as "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" and "Pennies From Heaven" (from a movie she also starred in with Steve Martin). Miss Peters has been featured on five recordings of her own work, several cast recordings from her days on broadway, and her singles... as well as recordings for special concerts and collections.
Another memorable fact is that Bernadette Peters is over the age of 60... and this is what she looks like TODAY:
This picture (from her appearance on Grey's Anatomy) was her at the age of 60, and while the internet is filled with unflattering pictures that seem to catch her at the perfectly inopportune moments, I feel that it is worth mentioning that she has never had plastic surgery. This is something that Bernadette Peters feels strongly about and it also makes her highly respected in my personal oppinion.
Another amazing fact: she started her career at the age of 8, singing in the chorus of a touring show and she has been singing since... that's a musical career of more than 52 years. Impressive by many standards, especially seeing as her voice still remain stellar to this day.
Most of her songs that she includes in her performances (as she tours around doing concerts these days) are melancholly and emotional ballads, which when sung by Bernadette... they have a soul that you don't hear from many artists. This is because of multiple reasons I assume, but the most important would be that she understands the emotions. She was married once, and it was a true Cinderella-PrinceCharming match-up. I don't know how many of you were watching the news around that time, but they were quite popular as a couple. In an unfortunate accident in 2005, her husband was killed in a helecopter crash... and she took time off from performing and as of yet, has stated no desire to return to broadway as a performer. In 2007 she started her touring concerts and still does them to this day.
Nov. 9 marked her latest concert, which was a large, one night show on Broadway for one of her many charity organizations that she backs (which include GMHC, Broadway Barks which she helped form, The Christopher Reeve Foundation, and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS which she is one of the Board of Trustee members). You can easily listen to a few of her CDs on lala.com, and I recommend it... if just to broaden your muscial horizons.
Yay! One point for me!
I'm impressed, I never knew this about Miss Peters. You just might get me into studying theater again...
Oh she's good, but 'm still partial to Sarah Brightman
Yeah I never knew that much about her before lol. Thanks Sarai!
Thanks for the comments and you're welcome for the information! (it was actually fun, because I love Bernadette with a seriously scary amount of passion. Oh well! back to listening to "Bad Romance")
Links added to some music and film clips.
