The Backlog That Never Was (With Reviews!)

[Update 2] In my last re-post of this blog, I reviewed Luigi's mansion (page 3), which was a nearly perfect game that was hindered by one major flaw (at least for me). In this update I review Metroid Prime, (page 4) which has been on my list of "most anticipated games" for a very long time now. Does it live up to expectations? I don't know. Go check page 4! :D

[Update 1] After undertaking this new side challenge, it wasn't long before I decided to start adding updates to this blog in the form of reviews. I understand that some of these games might be around ten years old or so, but I felt that it'd be fun to give my opinion on these classics. So without further adieu I give you my first set of reviews for anything ever.

[Original Post] I've said before that gaming runs deep in my family. My mom is a die hard fan of Zelda, as she own's and has played every Zelda title that has been released to date. She force fed it to me and my siblings, and raised a bunch of little Hyrulian minions. Then my dad is a multiplayer addict, and has a collection consisting of nothing but shooters. He's also the one who I discovered Halo alongside. My house growing up was littered with consoles, and T.V.'s in each room. They were very open to the concept of gaming, as it often brought the family together.

But, unfortunately they were good parents and they put a limit on our gaming tribe. Each person got one new game every two months (not counting Christmas). That's 6 games a year, and seeing as how we had every major console dating back to the NES, that made things difficult as far as decisions go.

The console's that I personally owned were the original Xbox, a Playstation 2, and a Gamecube. I was the only member of our family two own all three last generation consoles, and that's because my younger self got smart one Christmas and asked for all three consoles from different parts of my family. Keep in mind that I also owned a Game Boy Color and Advanced.

Of course an issue arose for little Hannibal. 6 games a year meant that I had to choose my games VERY wisely seeing as how I had four consoles. I hoarded the Pokemon and Halo releases, as well as the Mario and Zelda games. I also jumped on every Kingdom Hearts release that hit the shelves. I was able to build a very strong Xbox, and PS2 collection, but my GameCube got left fluttering in the wind.

But just a couple of days ago I journeyed back to my home way out in the countryside and looked in our shed where we stored all of the old stuff, and stumbled across my GameCube. See, I've added a new ability to my skill tree as of late, and it's called money. With this "money" ability, I am now able to visit all of the GameCube games that I missed out on, and make my inner child happy. Even though Sleeping Dogs releases next week, and we're entering the busy Fall, I'm going to direct as much attention to my GameCube as possible. After visiting a local Video Game store that sells video games, and consoles dating back to the NES, I was able to add on to my GameCube library and set the stage for the next year. Here's what I've got.

  • Nice blog! You're a lucky person right there, my parents aren't so enthusiastic over games!
  • Great article! Have you played star fox adventures? Although not the best star fox game, I found it very fun when I was younger.
  • I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to do what you're doing. I have barely played the Metroid Prime series, never finished Luigi's Mansion, and the same goes for Wind Waker. Damn, I need to go back and beat those games. Good blog, btw.
  • I wish my parents were as interested in video games as your. Good blog
  • Oh, such great GameCube titles. Pokemon Colosseum was amazing. So was Luigi's Mansion. Man. Good memories there. I should crack out my old GameCube and get to them again sometime. When I hear about the game restrictions, I feel spoiled. I was lucky that my parents never put restrictions on my games. (Except the Mature titles) But then again, I lived on a farm and earned my keep by working there.
  • Looks like you're in for a treat. Since you've played WW (wish you luck in finding another copy of that BTW) and are about to play Metroid Prime, all I can think to recommend is Pikmin and/or Pikmin 2. I've also had a ton of people recommend Tales of Symphonia to me, though I've never played it myself, despite the fact I have a copy.
  • The gamecube was my console of choice. I'm also hunting down the games I missed. So it felt weird to read about you doing the same thing.
  • Gamecube sure had some classics, and you've got a nice list there. One I'd definitely recommend is Eternal Darkness; that was one of my favorites on Gamecube.
  • All necessary games except for Viewtiful Joe. It never really appealed to me. You can get all the Prime games on the Wii in a bundle. I still want to get Luigi's Mansion.
  • Animal Crossing. Can't have a Gamecube without Animal Crossing.
  • I love that you grew up in family of gamers. The family that games together, stays together! :) And it seems like you have some good games to get into. I never had a gamecube but I did dabble a little when I visited my cousins, and I remember Luigi's Mansion was very fun. Haha I could understand why you put that one off.
  • My Gamecube is where I was practically raised. Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, Tales of Symphonia, Metroid Prime, and Pokémon Coliseum are some of my favorite games of all time. Quality titles right there.
  • My best GameCube memories come from playing the Timesplitters series for so many hours with my family. We still play to this day.
  • Mario Sunshine and Eternal Darkness, easily two of the best games i've ever played, all thanks to the GameCube.
  • I love Luigi! Gosh why does everyone hate him
  • Good luck with your new-found backlog. You already know about my history with Zelda games. And I should probably finish Metroid Prime too. Great blog. My parents haven never really been into video games, but they've for the most part been supportive. Every once in a blue moon they'll play, but other than that, I fight (which I don't ever do really anymore) with my siblings who plays.
  • Great blog! I definitely recommend Pokemon: Gale of Darkness (practically the sibling of Colosseum), Wind Waker, Kirby Air Ride (addicting with friends), Super Mario Sunshine, and I enjoyed Zelda Twilight Princess more on the Gamecube than Wii. I had such good memories with my Gamecube...
  • Why weren't you allowed to play Viewtiful Joe?
  • Nice blog! I hope that if I ever have kids, I'll help them grow up with gaming. My parents bought consoles and games for us, but my brother and I were the only gamers. I have quite a few Gamecube games I need to play too, and I foolishly sold a lot of mine a couple years ago, including Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin. I need to find them again at some point. Also, I'm trying to figure out what was wrong with Viewtiful Joe that your parents were against it.
  • How is wind waker? I never played it.
