He looks more like the kind of guy who would be concerned with your insurance needs than coming up with the latest gruesome battle between man and zombie. Looks aside, Kirkman's the current king of the walking dead. His best-selling graphic novels have become the basis for one of the hottest shows on AMC. After a nine-month wait, the second season of "The Walking Dead" finally begins Sunday as part of the "AMC Fearfest," more than 300 hours of Halloween-themed programming that includes more than 60 films through Oct. 31. Kirkman has been writing comics for more than a decade, but it was the transformation of "The Walking Dead" from comic to cable series that brought him the most attention.

"TV is a much larger medium than comics, sadly," Kirkman says. "I don't really know why, honestly. I think comics are just as valid a form of entertainment as television. I don't remember the first TV series I saw or the first movie I saw. But I can tell you exactly where I was when I read my first comic book. "But there are a lot more people who watch TV, so it's opened me up to a lot of opportunities. I wasn't announcing new comics in USA Today a couple of years ago and I think that's mostly because of 'The Walking Dead' show." That fame almost didn't happen.

For seven years, Kirkman turned down offers to adapt his stories -- a tale of a group of human survivors in a world filled with zombies -- to TV or film because he was certain it would be done poorly. It was writer/director Frank Darabont who finally convinced Kirkman that a good TV show could be made. "He knew exactly what made the book unique," Kirkman says. "He was saying things to me like 'It's all about the characters,' 'It's all about the drama.' He said it could only be a TV series and not a movie. "That was the kind of stuff I wanted to hear." There's a slight uneasiness for this second season because Darabont has left the series. But the constant will be Kirkman's books as the basis for the series. "One of the things we set out to do from day one, and one of the things that Robert Kirkman has been adamant about, is that we take some twists and turns. We have some equally unexpected twists and turns coming up in Season 2, but a lot of stuff you'll recognize," says Joel Stillerman, senior vice president of original programming, production and digital content for AMC. Kirkman likes the variations that have been made from his original stories because it allows for more examination of the characters -- something that's hard to do in comic book form. Although he's best known for scary stuff, there's a lighter side to Kirkman. He created the new comic book, "Super Dinosaur," just for his 5-year-old son. It's the story of a 9-year-old boy who teams up with his best friend, a genetically altered, 9-foot-tall tyrannosaurus rex that has robot arms. "After I got the first copy back from the printer, I realized that everything in it was stuff my son loves.To go along with 'The Walking Dead," I'm trying to do a book that all ages will like," Kirkman says.
