The lights are on

It's no secret that I am a huge fan of Rockstar. The worlds they create are some of the most expansive in the industry. They envelop gamers and send them on journies that only Rockstar can provide. Probably the most popular of these is Grand Theft Auto. It has 14 games to its name, soon to be 15 with the upcoming GTA V installment. I am extremely excited for the release, so to get ready, I thought I would bestow some of my knowledge of the series unto the GIO Community. While I won't go into all 14 games, I will touch on the major installments.
The first GTA game was released in 1997 under DMA Designs and Tarantula Studios. It was set in three different cities; Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City. You moved from city to city once you accomplished a sufficient number of tasks.
You play a fledgeling man-for-hire, and your jobs come from different persons of interest via payphone. As you can see, the view was rather different from what we are used to. You saw the world from a directly overhead view. The bullets were microscopic. The voices were non-existent. But, it was still a GTA game. The violence, the guns, the explosions, all of it was present from the start.
GTA 2 was released in 1999 under DMA Designs and Tarantula Studios. It was set in an unnamed American city. The game had the same look and feel of the first game, but the gameplay itself differed.
You again are a hired gun, but now, there are three different organizations in each are of the city. You get missions by venturing into the gangs territories and using their payphones. By completing tasks, you gain the gangs respect, earning more lucrative jobs. The other gangs view you as an enemy, however, and if its members spot you, they will do anything they can to remove you from their territory. This mainly consists of killing you.
Oh, and some trivia... GTA 2 is the only GTA to hold a T rating from the ESRB, and the only numbered title not to use roman numerals.
GTA III was released in 2001 under DMA Design and Rockstar Vienna. It took place in Liberty City, but it greatly resembled New York City. It was the first game in the series to adopt a 3D orientation, and a 3rd person perspective on the action. It was the first of the series to utilize the GPS mini-map and voice-acting during the game.
GTA III is widely considered a breakthrough in gaming. It is the reason that other games like it have been classified as "GTA-like" games. In the game, you play a silent escaped prisoner taking advantage of a corrupt city to further your own desires.
GTA Vice City
Vice City was released in 2002 under Rockstar North and Rockstar Vienna. The game is set in 1986 in Vice City (resembling Miami, Florida) when the cocaine drug problem sprung up. It was the first game to feature flying vehicles, including hydroplanes, which I personally thought was pretty cool.
You play as a mob grunt sent to make a little cash in a drug deal. When the deal gets raided, you are forced to befriend some of the most powerful people in the city... in a bad way. Anything that you can do to regain the money you lost to save your own life from your mob superiors.
GTA San Andreas
San Andreas was released in 2004 under Rockstar North. The game is set in 1992 in San Andreas. It's seperated into three different areas; Los Santos (Los Angeles), San Fierro (San Francisco), and Las Venturas (Las Vegas). It also features countryside areas between the three areas, as well asdeserts and beaches. The plot focuses on the crack cocaine epidemic that was prevalent during the time. It is also the first game that enables you to form your own posse of gang members and fight over territories. New systems are also put into place, including respect, hunger, sex appeal, weapon proficencies, muscle, and driving abilities.
You play as a young man brought back home for your mothers funeral. It is then that you learn of the deteriorating circumstances in your old neighborhood. You brother guilts you into staying and fixing the issues at hand. During the game, you are forced to get your hands dirty for crooked cops, government agencies, the mob, and the triads, all while keeping your eye on your own family.
GTA IV was released in 2008 under Rockstar North and Rockstar Toronto. The game is set in Liberty City (New York) during a present time. It is te first game of the series to have online multiplayer. It also enables you to use an in-game internet cafe for missions and side quests.
The game follows an immigrant fresh off the boat. He begins by straightening out family issues, and quickly delves into the seedier side of the city. We later learn that he ran from his boss that wanted stolen money, and to also find those responsible for a military tragedy that he suffered. He doesn't have an issue with getting his hands dirty to make a little extra cash.
This counts for only 6 out of the 14 current GTA games. There have been several expansions and spin-offs, but all of them are worth playing. If you enjoy a well-developed world filled with deceit, drama, betrayal, and the pursuit for the almighty dollar to survive, this series was made for you.
GTA V is rumored t be released later this year. There have been many rumors as to the setting and characters, but I have learned to put no faith in rumors. All we know for sure is that the series is returning to San Andrea; possibly the largest city featured in the GTA series. There is also a possibility of changing characters throughout the game and experiencing the story through the eyes of more than one character.
Personally, I would like to play as a police officer. With all of the criminal action that goes on during the course of one of these GTA installments, there would be plenty to do. It would take the game into a different perspective that we haven't experienced in the GTA world as of yet.
Anyways, thanks for reading. I hope I was able to gain some fans for the series, and possibly let you know a little something that you didn't already know.
