Picking Up The Pieces: Part I: Circle of Duty

Alright, so I am a giant pushover. With all of the latest news and hype surrounding Borderlands 2 (new trailer, concept art, pre-order bonus), my inner vault hunter was begging me to finish what I started with Borderlands and pop it into my XBox 360. While I had previously been discouraged by the egregious glitch that was tripped during one of my many raids of the Armory, I decided the best way to cauterize that wound was to keep playing, and eventually move onto the 2nd playthrough. A second playthrough would allow me to continue to level up and also get the achievement for completing all the missions in the Secret Armory DLC

However, I needed a place to start with my first playthrough. I decided to start with the Circle of Duty mission string. Circle of Duty is a series of six (technically five but we'll get to that) arena-based missions, set in a remote area of the Sunken Sea in the Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC.

Circle of Duty is broken down into six different missions:

Circle of Duty: New Recruit

Circle of Duty: Cadet

Circle of Duty: Private

Circle of Duty: Corporal

Circle of Duty: Sergeant

Circle of Duty: Medal of Duty

Circle of Duty: New Recruit is a fairly easy mission to start with. All you have to do is find the Circle of Duty Arena (Follow the inserted arrows on the above map), and speak with a man named Zach. He will provide you with the next Circle of Duty mission in the aforementioned order above.

In each of the remaining Circle of Duty missions, you have but one objective: Survive Round 0/1. Each of the subsequent rounds starts with you walking into a glowing red circle, thus unleashing wave after wave of Crimson Lance. The benefit of starting here (instead of Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot) is you continue to gain experience with each Crimson Lance you destroy and each Crimson Lance drops their usual loot (weapon, shield, money, health, etc). If you fail one of the missions, you do have to start that mission over again, and resupply your own ammo and med packs (vs. Moxxi where it is automatically replenished for you each time).

Here is a map of the actual Circle of Duty arena (also here's a link to the Borderlands Wiki page, which includes the same map but with Lance spawn points):

Here are a few tips for each round, so you don't get completely overwhelmed. I have also included what your character should receive after turning in each mission, based on my gameplay:

Circle of Duty: Cadet

  • The Lance start out easy, but get subsequently more difficult with each wave. They progress from normal Lance, to chemical Lance, to Lance Defenders. If you are stocked up, this mission can be easily accomplished solo. Completing this mission will provide you with: 4800 XP, money, and a shield.

Circle of Duty: Private

  • This one is very similar to the last round, however *** Lance start to join the fray, and there are a few more waves. Using the same strategy as the last round, you should have no problem at all. Completing this mission will provide you with: 4800 XP, money, and a Gearbox pistol.

Circle of Duty: Corporal

  • OK, here is where things get a bit tricky. Two new enemies of Lance-tacular lethality are added to this round: Lance Rocketeers, and also a Lancer will drive around using shock bolts. While the shock bolts will deplete your shield rapidly, I have found an effective strategy to destroy it. Once you get through each of the Crimson lance waves and the Lancer leaves its garage, it will simply continue in a counter-clockwise circle around the center of the arena. If you can get your character to this point here (there should be a balcony with a red laser door from which the Crimson Lance emerge). You can move all the way back against a wall, peek over the side, and hit the lancer with attacks from your rocket launcher, while being out of range from it's shock bolts. You should make sure you clear out any remaining lance that might be in your way. Once the Lancer is destroyed, mop up and walk on outta there. Completing this mission will provide you with: 7680 XP, money, and a class mod.

Circle of Duty: Sergeant

  • This particular round had me stuck for quite some time, because you feel like the waves of Lance will NEVER END. Eventually they do, but you better have a shield, med packs, and plenty of ammo to withstand them all. This round is very similar to above, but with more Lance and, of course, a Lancer. Lance Rocketeers will spawn first, so be prepared to take them out. After that, it's about 3-5 more waves before the Lancer comes out. Taking shelter in the same spot as the previous round is a good strategy, however be careful because the Lance WILL re-spawn from the laser door behind you. Once you destroy the Lancer, pick your favorite spot to camp out and move there immediately. Also, Lance Royal Guard make their first appearance here, they are seriously *** so be aware. If you can do this one co-op, I would highly suggest it, but it is possible to complete it solo. Completing this mission will provide you with: 9600 XP, money, and a random shotgun.

Circle of Duty: Medal of Duty

  • Alright, this is it. You have made it through wave after agonizing wave of Crimson Lance. It all comes down to this. The number of Lance Royal Guard is greater, there are two Lancers to deal with, and varying types of *** Lance. Same strategy as previous rounds: Destroy them all, loot yourself silly with all the spoils of war, turn in the mission. This final mission will provide you with: 12,000 XP, a large sum of money, and a Gearbox weapon based on your character class.
