It has been a while since my words had the luxury of gracing
Game Informer’s website, but I am back today on Valentine’s Day to talk about
my tragic tale of video game love. Anyone who is familiar with me or my work
knows I love Pokémon, yet there is one video game series that I adore that abused
and teased me. The blue blur himself Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the very first video game I owned so
it was natural that I would have a lifelong affection toward him and his games.
The game was good, he was a cool character, and Sonic was a smooth criminal in
the TV shows. I got my hands on Sonic and Knuckles and put Sonic 3 into the top
loader, DLC before it was cool, and created one of the best games I have ever played.
Those were the good times when it was all lollipops and rainbows before the
skies started to darken.
You can’t believe how excited I was when I played a Dreamcast
demo of Sonic Adventure at my local EB games ... Man EB games … anyway I knew
what I was getting for Christmas that year. The first level blew me away more
than Mario 64, just the first level, and despite what all the haters may say I thoroughly
enjoyed Sonic Adventure. So much that I bought the awful Mario Party rip-off
Sonic Shuffle. Then Sonic Adventure 2 came out and I also loved it, but this is
a tale of star crossed lovers so let’s fast forward to the drama because
everybody loves drama.
So despite Sega going under in the console race I supported
them 110 percent and Sonic Heroes looked cool and awesome – best part of that
game was the CG opening. I lied to myself telling my friends how it was a great
game. At the time I didn’t realize I had a problem since I had been with Sonic
so long I couldn’t see the abuse he started to put me though.
Do you remember a game called Billy Hatcher and the Giant
Egg? Of course you don’t it was horrible now matter how you looked at it. I remember
watching the commercial and hearing the words, “Made by the same people who
brought you Sonic, Sonic Team.” Sonic had such a hold of me I even played his associates
awful games. What I am really ashamed to admit is I beat the entire game! My
lowest point was still ahead of me with Sonic Riders and Shadow the Hedgehog.
Please do not judge for buying those games and even the
Sonic Riders sequel Zero Gravity. I had completely identified with my captor. I
took his small tokens of kindness of Sonic Rush 1 & 2 as his way of saying
I will get better and be good again, but I was wrong. The straw that broke the camel’s
back was Sonic Unleashed. One would think it was Sonic and the Secret Rings,
Sonic Chronicles, or Sonic and the Black Night, but no it was Unleashed. It was
a great idea then somebody went and said, “Hey you know would make a great Sonic
title? Strip away all the speed and make him slow and 30 minute long levels.” I
couldn’t take it anymore I was done with the heartache and betrayal.
Since then I attend some AAA classes and stopped buying
Sonic games with the exception of Sonic Generations, which was OK and just
moved on with life. Sometimes late at night with I’m awake I go outside and
stare at the stars thinking of all the good times we had and that maybe one day
we can be on speaking terms again. We will always have the Genesis Sonic.
Happy Valentine’s Day everybody.
