Oscars Fail

I didn't watch the Oscars because I frankly don't care about them. However I did check the winners the day after. I then found myself becoming enraged by the fact that District 9 didn't win a single award. In my opinion it was one of the best movies in years. I find the fact that it didn't win a single award a telling sign that Hollywood isn't interested in anything but mindless money makers or melodramatic dramas. It is ridiculous that Avatar won for visual effects. The entire movie is CG of course its going to have good effects. In District 9 it didn't really click with me until it was over that the aliens were CG. They were done so well it comes across as actors in costume. The point of effects is to blend them into the movie so the look like they should be there. District 9 was able to seamlessly blend in their effects so they never once stood out as blatant CG. Then the one category it was expected to win, Best Adapted Screenplay, it loses to Precious. WTF! Also how is that an adapted screenplay and not an original one? Overall this year the Oscars cemented my belief that Hollywood as an old boys club and more about tradition than excellence.

  • You're ranting cause your favorite movie didn't win awards? That's pathetic. Not to mention I've met a lot of people that have hated District 9.

And...you thought District 9 had better effects then Avatar? That's just stupid. :/

  • While I don't agree that District 9 was better than Avatar, I do agree that the Oscars are a bit bias.  I don't care what awards a movie wins as long as the movie entertains me.

  • @ Wampa King CG crap is a dime a dozen these days. Nothing Avatar had was really that impressive. Also you've never complained about anything in your life? Must be great to be you.

  • Hurt Locker definitely deserved best picture. I was glad it beat out Avatar for that one. I do have to agree though that District 9 should have won best visual effects. And don't mind Wampa. You should know by now. Haters gonna hate.

  • you must haven't seen The Hurt Locker, It deserved all of it's awards. Yes District 9 deserved an award, I also loved the movie as much as you profess, but it doesn't matter to me now because unless you've seen Hurt Locker, you'd understand why even Avatar didn't even win.

  • I saw Hurt Locker and didn't like it.

  • Wow... maybe you're not a  movie person then. Why are you even writing this?

  • I must not be. Can you explain to me what was so good about that movie.

I heard people saying it was the greatest war movie ever which is ludicrous, but that is besides the point.

  • By no means is The Hurt Locker the greatest war movie ever (I still think Saving Private Ryan is my pick for best war movie), but it is the best war movie about Iraq. It isn't biased with its opinions about the Iraq war because its more about the characters, only they just happen to be in Iraq. That's why I think it is a great film but not what I would pick for Best Picture. Luckily, I happen to be a huge film fan and I can't even count how many movies I saw last year. Now I'm glad that The Hurt locker won but only because I didn't want Avatar to win. If I got to choose who would win, I would pick UP. But if UP didn't then I would go with A Serious Man. I just think they are both nearly flawless films, and I think they are far better than most of the movies that were up for Best Picture. Before you/if you ask, yes, I did see all of the movies on the list except for An Education.

  • I can't believe nobody even mentioned that Inglorious Bastards didn't deserve to win, that movie was great all the way throught, great music, great story and great acting.  Quentin was again looked over.

Avatar seems to be hated on by most, but I thought that movie had great visual effects, it improved 3D and animation, I can't wait to see this technology used on the Tron movie, this will raise the bar once again.

  • Avatar won because it is all CG. I'm actually surprised they didn't nominate it for Best Animated Picture.

Precious won Best Adapted Screenplay because it is based off of the book Push. It's in the *** title!

It seems like you're just mad that your favorite movie didn't win. Well guess what, so am I. UP should have totally won Best Picture (I knew it was going to win Best Animated, but still), but it was beaten by The Hurt Locker, which I'm glad for because that means that Avatar didn't win.

  • I really enjoyed District 9 and was incredably surprised that it didnt win an award, but im not surprised that it lost to Avatar for best visuals.

  • "It is ridiculous that Avatar won for visual effects" Avatar deserves that, its a lot of CG to do. A LOT

Btw your title makes me think of a guy I know called Oscar (hes a bit of an idiot) Oscar failed again?! lmao

  • District 9 was a very good movie, and Avatar had great effects, in my opinion, no matter what anyone said. But the rest of Avatar was stupid.

I never saw the Hurt Locker.

  • Avatar won Visual Effects because it had the best VE.  Yes almost all of the movie was CG but while watching, I didn't see any major mistakes that took away from the experience.  When you have that much CG and you pull it off perfectly then you deserve the award for best VE's.  Pretty simple.

District 9 was an excellent movie and thats why I have it sitting in my collection.  Not big on the awards cause i'm not a "sappy" movie lover and thats what seems to be winning these days.  I love my Sci-Fi and Action so thats why Star Trek, District 9, Zombieland, and Inglorious Basterds are amoung the movies that populate my shelf.

  • I don't mind the sappy movies, so long as they're the well-written kind of sappy. Precious wasn't all that well-written. Sure, it had some (honestly) REALLY good acting, but the rest was just meh.

Also, District 9 is adapted from Neil Blomkamp's short film "Alive in Joubourg" and then Peter Jackson gave him a budget to turn it into District 9.

Also, The Hurt Locker really deserved it because it was f***ing awesome! It wasn't sappy, it had some great suspense, and good ole blowing sh*t up!! I'm just glad Avatar didn't win Best Picture.

  • If you want to complain about sci-fi films getting the shaft in '09, the fact that "Moon" wasn't even nominated is the *real* crime.

That said, I thought that the Ocsars were great, and this is coming from someone who generally doesn't care about them. The reason is because this year's Best Picture award effectively served as a proxy for what qualities the Academy recognizes as most important when sizing up a film; in essence, it was a rare opportunity for them to renew the definition of what excellence in film making is really about. 'Avatar' advanced the technological aspect of films by leaps and bounds, and its unspeakably large box office gross certainly advanced the cause of what's perceived (rightly) as an industry short on ideas and innovation as of late. However, as far as artistry in storytelling, acting, and screenwriting were concerned, Avatar was no better than an average effort. At the polar opposite of the spectrum, you had The Hurt Locker, which was brilliant on all these counts...yet nobody bothered to see it.

They made the right decision. By awarding The Hurt Locker, the Academy has sent a message to all would be screenwriters and directors that if they want to win the highest of honors, they need to do more than create really impressive visuals and help the industry financially. Film making, at its core, is essentially a business and nobody is going to forget that; but it is also a form of art, and this quality transcends all others when we step back and evaluate. It's good to see that the people running the show still agree.

  • The Hurt Locker won because it was about the war. end of story. District 9 shouldve won at least one award but it definitly did not have better effects than avatar..................by the way......did you know that the director of the hurt locker is james camerons ex wife?.......thats a kick in the balls

  • Dude I know and I laughed at James Cameron because even though he directed the currently highest grossing film Avatar or as in say Avaretard he still lost the Oscar to his Ex Wife ROFLMFAO

  • It's amusing because James Cameron has an overbearing, pompous attitude that has largely alienated him from the rest of his colleagues. His incredulous reaction to Avatar's underwhelming performance at other awards ceremonies was certainly a preface to what he had to have been feeling at the end of the Oscars, though his little incident on stage when accepting an award for "Titanic" (the whole king of the world deal) probably served to keep him in his seat this time around.
