Weekly Preview: Frozen

Here's something new I'll be doing to keep the blog fresh. BTW, if you know of any good horror movies not yet released that you think deserve some limelight, start a mothersexing conversation and tell me about it :)

I remember when I first saw the short film Elevated. I always wanted to come up with a claustrophobic concept for something I'd make when I grew older, and when I heard of the concept of a group of strangers trapped in an elevator with unknown creatures stalking them, I thought "Oh man, that is such a great concept. I wish I came up with it first!" I got that same exact feeling when I heard of this new film that will be premeiring on the Sundance film festival called Frozen from cult-favorite director Adam Green (Who made the hilarious and scary Hatchet).

The concept is that three skiiers (I'm a skiier so I already know I'll love this), are accidentally stranded on a chair lift and are forced to make life-and-death choices that they agree are probably better than staying up there and freezing to death in the cold. Frozen landscapes where no one is around is already unsettling as it is (As shown from the John Carpenter classic The Thing), but being trapped in a tight suspended chair lift just Hatchets (pun srsly intended) it up to a whole new level. I remember going up on chair lifts with my dad while skiing at Mammoth mountain. Everytime the thing stopped, you would look down at the nauseating heights and feel the cold harsh wind of winter. Suddenly, a sigh of sweet, sweet relief as the thing starts running again. Now take experiences like that, but put it at night time, make it 10 times colder, and the knowing fact that the chair won't be running again and no one's gonna come and save you.

Green, director of Hatchet, became known for balancing laughs and blood in his previous outing, but here, he is maturing into something else. Something that shows that he is more than capable of handling a psychologically claustrophobic horror. I'm going to say it again when I say, "I wish I came up with this concept first."
