A straight-set winner, Djokovic wrapped up his first-round match with Paul-Henri Mathieu in under two hours, 6-2, 6-4, 7-5, while showing the rest of the men's field why he is the man to beat this January.

Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams both steamrolled their way into the second round, keeping alive the potential for a third-round clash between the two later this week.

You have to respect Victoria Azarenka for aiming high. She carries herself like a No. 1, and she has developed a No. 1 player's level of consistency. She has also played enough to take the No. 1 ranking into 2013. She just happens to have lost 11 of 12 matches to the woman who is actually the best player in the world, Serena Williams. Unlike most of the women on tour, however, she doesn't back down from Serena.

This is not the most difficult draw Djokovic has ever had. Berdych has started off the year with a thud, Monaco has already lost and Wawrinka and Melzer are a bit more comfortable on clay. Verdasco, a 29-year-old 2009 Aussie semifinalist, has been on a steady downward slide in the last couple of years. Stepanek, now 34 years old, is an admirable grinder but not a major threat. So barring an always-possible, never-likely upset on par with Lukas Rosol's defeat of Nadal at Wimbledon in 2012, Djokovic should expect to cruise to the semis.

The Russian is widely acknowledged as one of the toughest, steeliest competitors in the game, and she has beaten Serena on two of the biggest stages in the sport, at Wimbledon and the end-of-year championships. The problem is that both of these victories occurred in 2004, and Serena has won all nine of the pair’s clashes since then. In fact, Sharapova hasn’t won a set against Williams since 2008: it seems that each time the two superstars face off, Serena is determined not just to beat but to annihilate her opponent. Sharapova’s powerful game, which leaves most lesser foes floundering, looks weaponless against the American.
