The lights are on
2009 has been a great year in gaming, and nobody ever gets to pick up every game that came out. So here is my list for the award.
Keep in mind, I don't own a PS3, PSP, and am not a big PC gamer.
I purchased an XBOX 360 in January.
I got a Wii for Christmas 2008.
I just finished Assassin's Creed 2 and here is a change.
This year probaly had the best games I have played in a while.
So without further ado, here are my games of the year.
7. Red Faction: Guerilla- This game gave me the power to just blow anything I wanted up, and it worked well. I felt like a superhero as I destroyed crap with my giant slege hammer, put explosives on cars and drove them into buildings, and tore the whole thing down. The biggest problem was lack of a strong story, and repetitve mission types. It is still a can't miss game for any gamer. Overall (9.2/10)
6. Assassin's Creed 2- Only this far up on the list because the game isn't very replayable, but it is still amazing. An improvement over the first game in every way, the game is shockingly good. Gorgeous, strong story and action packed, it is a truly awesome game. (9.5/10)
5. Halo3: ODST- This game put my confidence level that Bungie could still make a good campaign again at a high. The new weapons and story progression were pretty much amazing, but the campaign was short and I didn't spend much time with the game as I did with the other games on my list. Overall (9.5/10)
4. Madden 10- This game was absolutly amazing. Franchise and online franchise were fun to play, and drafts and trading were always fun. Superstar lacked, but this game was my first next gen Madden game and the best Madden ever. This game isn't better than ODST, but it is largely replayable, and I put it in constantly. Overall (9.3/10)
3. Borderlands- This game was simply incredible. It brought awesome RPG/FPS elements that kept me addicted until I beat it, and then I played it again. You can tell you're addicted to this game when all you can think about is getting that next level. Every level feels rewarding when you get a skill point that improves you character permanently. My only problem with this game is that the final couple levels were kind of a grind, and It killed the near perfection for me. Overall (9.5/10)
2. Halo Wars- As a big fan of RTS games and Halo, this game was a must get for me. I played the demo, and wasn't impressed. I got the game, played the first level, and I thought it was just ok. 2 hours later, I was loving it. 70 hours later and still counting, this game is incredible. So simple, but skilled players can make it complicated. Amazing cutscenes, Multiplayer that highly stresses teamwork, and a great campaign make this game a must own. Overall (9.8/10)
1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2- This game is perfection. I know I will get angry comments for this, but that is why its called an opinion. It is just as good as the first game, and it just keeps getting better in multiplayer. The single player campaign is amazing and jaw dropping, Spec Ops is an absolute blast with a friend, and multiplayer is about as addictive as cocaine and msg. A few tiny problems like no co-op and a short SP campaign, but I barely thought of this as I rained AC-130 shots from above while my team captured flags and kicked ass. The game meets all of the expectations I had, and furthers the fact that games can be an art form. A must play for any fan of shooters or cintematic cutscenes, this game is one of the best games of all time. Overall (10/10)
Thanks for checking out my list, it was an excellent year for gaming. Comment on your opinion, and check out my other blogs. I will update the list if by some chance I play another game this year.
Love you list man, exactly accurate, right on the money esspecialy about Modern warfare 2. Kind of have to disagree about Halo odst though. It was fun but it was just to much like command and conquer halo style. It does belong in the top five this year in my book though.
Oops, I meen woman.
Oh crap, I mean if your a man then I love your list and if your a woman I love your list.
well CODMF2 is probably on everybodys list because of the amount of awesomeness. But nice list.
Cool stuff, but question: Did you play Batman? :)
I bought the first MW game when it came out and hated the multiplayer. Any time it is possible to die 10 times within 2 minutes of a match it makes me want to throw my controller at kittens. I can see why other people love it though but this has kept me from buying the 2nd MW game new. All in all, these are all some fantastic titles. I too have played the crap out of Halo Wars; awesome cut scenes. I would replace Madden 10 with Forza 3 though. Racing is more my syle...
out of all four games call of duty moder warfare2 is the best best graphics best console f*** xbox360
Pretty good list. Not a big sports game fan so not sure bout the madden 10, but I know borderlands is amazing. As well as the new cod. You've gotten me interested in buying Halo wars now. I am a huge fan of RTS's and would love a new RTS to play.
Ric White, no unfortunatly I did not play Arkham Asylum yet.
Jackson, seriously try Halo Wars, you shouldn't be disapointed
I definently agree with the halo games your list is very accurate these games are amazing in many ways.
I have to agree with your picks. Nice list. And you need to go get games like Assassin's Creed 2 and Left for Dead 2!
I can't really argue since it is your personal list, but I found RF:G very very very disappointing. It was essentially GTA on Mars. The missions were there, but they were bland and repetitive. Not to mention that it made no sense in the continuity of the story. Really I found it so disappointing that I had to sell it immediately.
As I said though it's your list, but being that I loved the series it was very disappointing to me.
I was turned off by EA Sport's micro-transactions for in game features in Madden 10 and NCAA Football 10. Especially, since they weren't even new features. I haven't been able to get into sports games for a couple years now, so I;m a little bias.
I enjoyed Halo Wars quite a bit. Not being a PC gamer myself, it was nice to have something in the form of a RTS to play on the console. It wasn't perfect - or for hardcore RTS players - but it worked for me.
Borderlands was a lot of fun and I loved the art style. It might have been my choice for game of the year had I not just started playing Batman: Arkham Asylum this week. My skepticism kept me away for a little while, but I am glad I finally gave in and picked it up. They really nail the detective side of Batman which I love from the comics.
Nice read.

Good choices, I understand your viewpoint: I can't really add PS3 games to mine, but you should seriously try AC2. It's one of the best games I've ever seen, with the most stunning storyline I've heard of so far.
i hate halo wars but i like the rest
I'm absoulutly not surprised to see MW2 #1 on ANY list of best games of 2009, lol, but it it your list, and your opinions :).
And this is just my opinion, but I've heard that the Red Faction game sucks. I remember playing the first one, and remember feeling how original that game was, it was one of my favorite FPS's. I also remember playing the 2nd one, and being utterly dissapointed in that one XD
Halo wars before Borderlands? You just ruined your entire list right there. Halo Wars is to simple to be a true RTS and the genre only works to its full potential with mouse and keyboard. Game pad is just not complicated enough. Skilled RTSers need a shortcut for every unit and building, and only a keyboard can do that.
P.S. I played Halo Wars, and it honestly failed. I went right back upstairs and played Command & Conquer.
AWSOME LIST
I'm kind of suprised you didn't include Fable 2. Idk though, cause I haven't played it but I could see someone like you liking out.
Alright, I'll probably rent Halo Wars to try it out. Once it get my xbox fixed that is :[
