Robot in the Corner Podcast: Episode 29 - Video Game Designer, Scott Rogers

Episode 29 is available now. This week, we interview video game designer and author, Scott Rogers. We talk to him about his experience in the video game industry, game design, making games, and more. In the 2nd part of our interview, we talk to Scott about his book, "Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Game Design", and he answers listener submitted questions. The show is extra long this week, so if you'd like to jump right to the interview, it starts at 26:11. Break audio taken from music by I Am Empire.

Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Game Design is available pretty much everywhere - I ordered my copy from Amazon.

Extra Cool Credential: Scott Rogers worked on the bosses in the first God of War and designed the Hydra boss battle.

  • What?! Episode 29?!!! But... but I thought I just listened to episode 32! Did I hit a time warp or something?!!

    ...Quick, is PSN up??
  • Cool, been gettin behind in my robot podcasts. I do always listen to them on the road when I drive to Virginia, so I am greatly looking forward to this one for sure.
  • Wait a minute, Doc. Are you telling me that were back in time to episode 29?! This is heavy!
  • Sweet, sweet. Can't wait to give this a listen. I've been looking forward to listening to this episode for a while!
  • I get it...episode 29 because that was the original Scott Rogers one.
  • Great interview guys! I am playing Portal 2 and finding it quite hilarious.
  • I have to say this Scott Rogers guy seems like a very intelligible person. It was great to hear from a designer who has worked on some great projects as well as having some good inisght and tips. Gives hope to the little guys like me who are going to college to try and become game designers. I am for sure picking up a copy of his book.
  • Level Up will be my next book to buy.

Okay I've listened to parts one and two so far.  Fingers crossed work is slow today so I can listen to the rest uninterrupted.

  • Rofl - I'm sorry, I've refrained from saying this in the past but it's gotta come out now: Your show openings are so insanely awkward and funny, I regularly get chills of embarrassment, yet laugh uncontrollably.

Finished the episode! Thanks for asking my question. Sadly he gave the answer I was anticipating. I've even given that same advice. I fiddle around with so many editors but haven't committed to a project yet. Since picking up Level Up a few weeks ago I have been working on documentation for a game pitch. So I am working towards something!
  • For only a tribute this show was pretty awesome! I haven't ever really thought about video game design before, but I'll probably end up buying this book.
  • Great interview, and I'm quite curious to know how much work\help Scott did with Red Faction: Armageddon.  I'm cautiously optimistic for Armageddon since I loved Guerrilla.
